Oh my!!!! The bombshell was another hoax!!

The question was asked... why bring in a "hearsay witness" that would not be even allowed to testify in an actual court of law? Why not bring in the actual secret service or the limo driver in question. After all, the commission does have subpoenea authority here. The answer, of course, is that the legitimate "first hand witnesses" would not have testified to the story they wanted told.

The only question left folks... is why is the left so bloody gullible?

Former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson’s Tuesday testimony ought to ring the death knell for former President Donald Trump’s political career. Trump is unfit to be anywhere near power ever again.

Hutchinson’s resume alone should establish her credibility. The 25-year-old had already worked at the highest levels of conservative Republican politics, including in the offices of Sen. Ted Cruz (TX) and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (LA), before becoming a top aide for former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows.

In short, Hutchinson was a conservative Trumpist true believer and a tremendously credible one at that. She did not overstate things, did not seem to be seeking attention, and was very precise about how and why she knew what she related and about which testimony was firsthand and which was secondhand but able to be corroborated.

Some like the alky are truly gullible.

Others know exactly what they're doing and why they're doing it -

To distract from the most epic fucking disaster of a president in 100 fucking years.

The problem is that the distraction only works on the devoted. There's a reason why 1 MILLION democrats have switched to Republicans this year. - FJB.

Hutchinson’s testimony confirmed a damning portrayal of Trump as unstable, unmoored, and absolutely heedless of his sworn duty to effectuate a peaceful transition of presidential power. Considering the entirety of her testimony, it is unsurprising that Hutchinson said she heard serious discussions of Cabinet members invoking the 25th Amendment that would have at least temporarily evicted Trump from office.

Trump is a disgrace. Republicans have far better options to lead the party in 2024. No one should think otherwise, much less support him, ever again.

At Tuesday's Jan. 6 committee hearing, Rep. Liz Cheney displayed a handwritten note which Hutchinson testified she wrote after Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows handed her a note card and pen to take his dictation.

Sources familiar with the matter said that Herschmann had previously told the committee that he had penned the note.

"The handwritten note that Cassidy Hutchinson testified was written by her was in fact written by Eric Herschmann on January 6, 2021," a spokesperson for Herschmann told ABC News Tuesday evening.

"All sources with direct knowledge and law enforcement have and will confirm that it was written by Mr. Herschmann," the spokesperson said.

POLITICO Playbook: Jan. 6 panel may have found its 'smoking gun'

DRIVING THE DAY

It’s hard to imagine how Tuesday’s surprise hearing of the House Jan. 6 committee could’ve been more damning for President DONALD TRUMP.

With vivid stories told in measured tones, CASSIDY HUTCHINSON, a former special assistant to the president and aide to chief of staff MARK MEADOWS, “stitched together every element of the panel’s case against Donald Trump,” our Kyle Cheney and Nicholas Wu write. “The Capitol riot committee has painted the former president’s potential criminal culpability for his effort to overturn the election in stark hues: investigators have portrayed Trump fuming atop an increasingly conspiracy-addled West Wing and working to corrupt the peaceful transfer of power at any cost.”

Among the stunning revelations in Hutchinson’s testimony:

— Trump knew that some supporters on Jan. 6 were armed, and didn’t care. In Hutchinson’s recounting, Trump wanted the rally on the Ellipse to be packed for his speech. Warned by the Secret Service that some Trump supporters were choosing to watch from a distance because they didn’t want to go through metal detectors and have their weapons (including AR-15s and handguns) confiscated, the president was allegedly unmoved.

“I don’t fucking care that they have weapons; they’re not here to hurt me,” Trump said, according to Hutchinson. “Take the fucking [magnetometers] away. Let my people in. They can march to the Capitol from here, let the people in and take the mags away.”

If true, that means that Trump told the crowd to march to the Capitol to “fight like hell” knowing that some were armed.

— Trump demanded his team take him to the Capitol. We knew Trump wanted to go to the Capitol on Jan. 6; he said so in his speech. But this was the first time that it was clear it wasn’t a spur of the moment decision; it was an idea that some people in Trump World (notably, RUDY GIULIANI) knew about and advocated, and which White House Counsel PAT CIPOLLONE believed had concerning legal ramifications.

Hutchinson recounted that Cipollone told her to ensure that the motorcade would not go to the Capitol: They’d get “charged with every crime imaginable if we make that movement happen.”

“Pat was concerned it would look like we were obstructing justice or obstructing the electoral college count,” she said. “And he was also worried that it would look like we were inciting a riot or encouraging a riot to erupt on the Capitol."

— When the motorcade refused to go to the Capitol, Trump angrily grabbed the steering wheel and allegedly assaulted a Secret Service agent. Hutchinson recounted a secondhand story from TONY ORNATO, the White House deputy chief of staff at the time, about Trump’s reaction when he realized that, for security reasons, the Secret Service was not taking him to the Capitol, as he wanted, after his speech on the Ellipse.

“I’m the fucking president. Take me up to the Capitol now,” Trump said, per Hutchinson. The president then reached up to grab at the steering wheel before the head of his detail, ROBERT ENGEL, “grabbed his arm and said, ‘Sir, you need to take your hand off the steering wheel.’” She says Ornato told her Trump then used his other hand to “lunge” at Engle’s clavicle.

The secret Service agents will testify under oath to confirm her story..

Our own Kyle Cheney writes in: “Trump allies will seek out any potentially disputable aspect of her testimony and use it to discredit her entirely. … The select committee has also staked a lot on Hutchinson’s credibility holding up — and there was lots of confidence from the panel after Tuesday’s hearing that she had delivered effectively.”

MICK MULVANEY: “This is explosive stuff. … I know her. I don’t think she is lying.”

WHAT COMES NEXT?

— Legally: “In Hutchinson’s testimony, experts see ‘nuggets’ for Justice probe,

NYT’s Peter Baker: “Did Trump commit a crime? ‘This is the smoking gun,’ SOL WISENBERG, a former deputy to KEN STARR, tells me about today's hearing. ‘There isn’t any question this establishes a prima facie case for his criminal culpability on seditious conspiracy charges.’”

— For the committee: “Ginni Thomas lawyer has ‘serious concerns’ about Jan. 6 committee fairness,” by Betsy Woodruff Swan and Nicholas Wu … “Eastman drops bid to block phone records from Jan. 6 committee,” by Kyle Cheney

— Politically: “The startling revelations from Hutchinson's testimony about Trump's erratic behavior and state of mind on January 6 could make it easier for Republican presidential hopefuls to challenge the former President in a primary should he run, [a] Trump ally added,” write CNN’s Gabby Orr and Pamela Brown. “‘This is basically a campaign commercial for (Florida Gov.) RON DESANTIS 2024,’ said the Trump ally.”

The U.S. Secret Service says it'll cooperate with the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, after a former White House aide on Tuesday claimed she'd heard that Donald Trump lunged at a driver inside a presidential car and demanded that he be taken to the Capitol.

According to reports, agents are prepared to go before Congress to flatly contradict the aide's story of an enraged Trump determined to get to the Capitol as a security breach was taking place there.

NBC News chief White House correspondent Peter Alexander tweeted on Tuesday night that two Secret Service staffers are set to testify that Trump neither lunged at the wheel of the presidential vehicle, nicknamed "The Beast," nor in any way assaulted them in a bid to get them to take him to the Capitol.

On Tuesday, reporters swiftly relayed news that the Secret Service agents disputed Hutchinson’s account of events in the presidential vehicle.

Carol Leonnig of the Washington Post, author of two books on the Trump administration and a history of the Secret Service, Zero Fail, said: “Sources tell me agents dispute that Donald Trump assaulted any agent or tried to grab the steering wheel on Jan 6. They agree Trump was furious about not being able to go to Capitol with his supporters. They offer to testify under oath.”

Secret Service agents have testified before, during the impeachment of Bill Clinton.

Trump attacked Hutchinson during the hearing, using his Truth Social platform to call her a “phony”, a “leaker” and a “whacko”. He denied grabbing the steering wheel or attacking an agent.

Republicans on the House judiciary committee tweeted that Hutchinson’s evidence was “all hearsay” and added: “What a joke.”

But Steve Vladeck, a law professor at the University of Texas in Austin, said: “Don’t be distracted by claims of ‘hearsay’. That goes to whether evidence can be admitted in court, not Congress.

Multiple sources seem to be weighing in on this, but this part of her testimony really was hearsay, and this is why it is problematic. Doubt she lied, but the person who told her this might have gotten it through a chain of telephone.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Whether or not doesn’t matter because.

Even if the Secret Service says it has people who are willing to testify under oath that former President Donald Trump never physically attacked a Secret Service officer in his attempts to go to the United States Capitol building where his supporters were gathering to riot.

National security attorney Bradley Moss, however, doesn't think that this particular detail matters when it comes to holding Trump criminally liable for the events of January 6, 2021, and he has written a lengthy Twitter thread in which he slams the excuses made for the former president by what he describes as "Trump apology land."

In particular, Moss says the most damning testimony from Hutchinson was about Trump's indifference to the fact that some of his supporters came to his "Stop the Steal" rally armed with weapons.

Trump still encouraged people to march to the Capitol even after learning some of them were armed leaves him legally vulnerable.

"Trump was clear before the speech he wanted to go to the Hill and march with the crowd.! "Staff told him over and over he could not do it and promised the Hill he wouldn't. He told the 1/6 crowd anyway he was going to march with them, and USSS started making preparations to clear a path. Again, this is despite his awareness the crowd was armed, up to and including AR-15s... After the speech, Trump is told they're not marching with the crowd. Trump is pissed. He planned to march."

Scott it, would be reasonable to conclude that Trump at least wanted to have the threat of violence as a tool to intimidate Congress out of certifying the 2020 election results. That alone is a crime

It was a failed coup

C.H. Truth said...

More from Trende (who is not a Trump fan, btw)

On hearsay: First, it doesn't matter for right now, because this isn't a trial. At the same time, the hearsay rule isn't just some legal mumbo-jumbo, it's rooted in the common sense notion that you're more skeptical of evidence offered second- or third-hand.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

But from day one you went into denial about the insurrection, and since then you have gotten worse than before.

C.H. Truth said...

Well a smart well reasoned person would be more skeptical of evidence offered second or third hand...

But not someone sick with TDS...

They would gladly accept fourth had information in dispute if it told them the story they wanted to hear.

C.H. Truth said...

In particular, Moss says the most damning testimony from Hutchinson was about Trump's indifference to the fact that some of his supporters came to his "Stop the Steal" rally armed with weapons.

Well interestingly enough... there really wasn't much for "weapons" at the rally unless you actually demand that a flagpole holding an American flag, a helmet, or a flak jacket was a weapon.

Very few people were arrested for guns and at this point there is no evidence that anyone entered the Capitol building armed with a gun.

So the "facts" weigh down the allegations... which I am still not sure has anything to do with anything. Obviously Nancy Pelosi, AOC, and the rest of the Democrats are ALWAYS indifferent to the fact that Antifa/BLM rioters are armed... and it doesn't stop them from literally setting up funds to bail them out of jail.

Being indifferent to the fact that people might be dangerous is not a crime and if it was you would have to start with Kamala Harris who personally was involved in funding the bail money for Antifa rioters (some charged with assaulting police).

So... sorry Roger...

No "yeah but" here.

If the story about Trump "assaulting" a Secret Service agent (which was the big topic yesterday) if fake... then here entire testimony is damaged beyond repair and nothing else matters.

Coup leaders usually fail visibly, definitively, unambiguously. You don’t need committees to verify who led a coup when the plotters declare their seditious intent, as Hitler did in the beer hall, by punctuating it with a gunshot into the ceiling. I hope it does not sound like I am diminishing the gravity of January 6 when I say that it was among the dumbest coup attempts in history—not because it was destined to fail but because of the trivial reason it was destined to fail. That reason is Trump’s incredible laziness and complete aversion to personal risk. I struggle to think of another putsch that was doomed in quite this way. A whole party prostrated itself before its leader. Lawyers confected idiotic, barely-even-trying justifications. And thousands of people stood ready in the streets to escalate the violence and stop legitimate politics from proceeding. But Trump himself, the one plotter whose vigorous participation was absolutely necessary, seems to have spent most of that day watching TV and ignoring texts.

Either way... politicians are indifferent to "their side" rioting and with Democrats they seem perfectly willing to tell them to get to the streets, not allow this to stand, show them the repercussions, and everything else they say to incite.

These details sound like the Trump we have all grown to love and hate (and, frankly, are much more in-character than growling defiantly at his Secret Service agents, like Harrison Ford in Air Force One). Breyer announced his retirement back in January, and Jackson was confirmed as his successor in April. The Supreme Court did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.

We already know she was not in the limo - and anything that supposedly happened in that limo is by definition "hearsay". She was an assistant to Meadows and doesn't sound like she was very important one. She was not personally present for 99% of what she was testifying to and we now know that a note she claimed was her own (which would make it more legally compelling - was written by someone else - meaning she is just reading something else as you or I could do - that testimony is useless).

You can "deny" that you understand the meaning of hearsay...

or demand that it doesn't matter to you anyways...

But by all accounts at this point there is nobody from that limo that will corroborate her story and everyone so far has denied it happened... and Secret Service has told the Committee that they are okay with being called to set the record straight.

Lastly.. even Polico was puzzled by why the committee offered no actual compelling corroboration to this testimony when the limo driver and secret serve appear more than willing to cooperate and testify?

Trump: 'They're not here to hurt me'

Mr Trump was "furious" on the morning of January 6 in 2021, Ms Hutchinson testified, because he was angry about the extra space taken up by magnetometers screening for weapons before his fiery speech that day.

Protesters were gathering outside the White House to hear Mr Trump at the "Stop the Steal" rally, with some carrying AR-15-style rifles, but he wanted security to stop screening so more people could get in and the crowd would look larger.

Ms Hutchinson, then a top aide to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, said Mr Trump's words were:

"Take the effing mags (magnetometers) away; they're not here to hurt me."

She testified she had been told by White House security official Tony Ornato that Mr Trump knew the protesters were armed...

After his speech, Mr Trump wanted to join supporters storming the Capitol as Congress voted to certify President Joe Biden's win, demanding his detail drive him there.

She said Mr. Trump tried to grab the steering wheel of the heavily armoured presidential vehicle, after he'd said:

"'I'm the effing president. Take me up to the Capitol now."

When the head of his security detail Bobby Engel told him that wasn't happening, she said:

"The president had very strong, very angry response to that. Tony described him as being irate," she testified.

After Mr Trump had tried to grab the steering wheel and failed she said he "lunged" at Mr Engel.

"When Mr Ornato had recounted this story to me, he had motioned towards his clavicle (collarbone)," she said.

She said the confrontation was relayed to her later that day by Mr Ornato in an office, while Mr Engel was there.

MADRID—The U.S. will make its biggest military expansion in Europe since the Cold War, including its first permanent troop presence in Poland, as NATO prepares for two more members to join the alliance in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The announcement, which follows a NATO pledge this week to increase its high-readiness forces sevenfold, comes despite Washington’s efforts to shift U.S. attention toward China and offers fresh evidence how Russia’s war is upending international security.

“We’re stepping up. We’re proving that NATO is more needed now than it ever has been,” President Biden said Wednesday at the opening of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit.

You are now exhibiting signs of cognitive dissonance as well as extreme confirmation bias.

- You are literally arguing that second hand information is not "hearsay" as if you actually do not understand the concept.
- You are refusing to even acknowledge that Secret Service is denying pretty much everything that she said happened in the limo.
- You are ignoring that someone else penned the letter that she read from as if it was her own - which committee members are now stipulating.

- You continue to disregard the knowledge that there is no corroboration of her story (only people willing to contradict) and still repeating it as fact in spite of this.

Not that you are alone... Roger is right there with you.

Lastly.. even Polico was puzzled by why the committee offered no actual compelling corroboration to this testimony when the limo driver and secret serve appear more than willing to cooperate and testify?

That is the definition of hearsay, Reverend...

and either way... if the Secret Service and limo driver himself are denying the story (which they are) it doesn't matter who else is peddling the nonsense.

But it begs an interesting question?

Why was the only person to testify the one providing hearsay?

Because as Sean Trende (and others have pointed out) she can "repeat" a story that is patently untrue and that doesn't' mean she is lying if she is just "repeating" it. But if someone testifies who "knows it is not true" - Then they are guilty of perjury.

So

They did not call Secret Service because they would have denied

Instead the call someone insulated from legal issues if they tell the story.

Even if the partition was open, the distance from the back to the steering wheel would have meant that Trump would have had to be lying across the backs of rear racing back seat and the drivers seat (horizontally) while stretching out to grab a steering wheel and assault a secret service agent.

it would be physically impossible.

Hearsay Is Complicated

Hearsay isn’t the easiest legal concept to describe or understand. Technically, it’s an out-of-court statement offered as proof that the matter asserted is true (as opposed to the mere existence of the statement itself). The core issue is trustworthiness: an in-court statement relevant to litigation and made by someone who is speaking under oath is considered to be more trustworthy than a statement uttered outside of court and thus not subject to the pains and penalties of perjury. Consequently, the “hearsay rule” is one that generally excludes legally untrustworthy statements — but not all out-of-court statements — from being offered as evidence.

“Hearsay rules are meant to ferret out evidence that is more reliable,” attorney Michael Harwin, a former federal prosecutor now in private practice, explained to .

Under federal hearsay rules, the most reliable statements are normally those made in court and after someone has been sworn to testify truthfully under oath. Testimony that refers to statements that were not made under oath could be considered less reliable, Harwin explained.

Accordingly, there are exemptions (things that the rules say are simply “not hearsay“) and exceptions (other carve-outs) in the federal rules of evidence, Harwin told Law&Crime.  Regardless of the moniker applied, the courts who analyze these issues day-in and day-out under the aforementioned rules generally look for an indicia of trustworthiness in an out-of-court statement in order for a fact-finder (a judge or a jury) to consider it.

“It’s literally all hearsay evidence,” tweeted @JudiciaryGOP, a committee whose Republican members are led by Trump loyalist Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio. “What a joke.”

Jordan refused earlier this year to cooperate with the Jan. 6 Committee, and the House Judiciary Republicans whom he leads largely misstated and oversimplified the Federal Rules of Evidence — the rules with which the lawmakers overseeing the courts should be familiar.

Secret Service Denies Trump Attacked Them, Grabbed Steering Wheel

The former senior aide to White House chief of staff Mark Meadows calmly and credibly described the events unfolding in Trump’s orbit that day and in the days leading up to it. With a high level of detail and precision, Hutchinson made clear that Trump seemed to know the crowd gathered for his fabulist speech about election fraud and anti-democratic notions was armed, that he wanted desperately to lead the group to the Capitol, that he was not heeding the advice of his overwhelmed senior aides. The audience also now knows that Trump’s allies appear to be completely comfortable tampering with witnesses.

According to Politico

Engle and the Limo driver were both interviewed by the commission previously about these events. The Secret Service said they were not informed about this Hutchinson testimony before it happened and were not asked for any clarification for what they (secret service) are suggesting was new allegations.

They had previously discussed whether or not Trump wanted to be redirected to the Capital but there was nothing in their original testimony that pointed to any physical altercations with the President.

So the Jan 6th commission already has testimony from these witnesses...

Didn't notify them or ask them about these new allegations (which apparently were not provided previously by the secret service witnesses)...

and have not been asked to appear again to clarify any of this.

hmmmmmm...

Had they already had this testimony from the secret service about a physical altercation that would have been made available on Prime time during their first hearing.

________

Trump ‘Lunged’ at Secret Service Agent Who Refused to Take Him to Capitol: Jan. 6 Hearing

“I’m the f-ing president, take me to the Capitol now,” the former president said, according to former Mark Meadows aide Cassidy Hutchinson

By NIKKI MCCANN RAMIREZ

In bombshell testimony to the Jan. 6 committee, former Mark Meadows aide Cassidy Hutchinson testified that on Jan. 6 an irate President Trump railed against aides and Secret Service officers who refused to transport him to the Capitol, allegedly yelling, “I’m the f-ing president, take me to the Capitol now,” and attempting to grab the steering wheel of the presidential limousine as it left the rally at the Ellipse.

“The president reached up toward the front of the vehicle to grab at the steering wheel,” Hutchinson testified. “Mr. Engel grabbed his arm and said, ‘Sir, you need to take your hand off the steering wheel. We’re going back to the West Wing. We’re not going to the Capitol.’ Mr. Trump then used his free hand to lunge toward Bobby Engel. When Mr. Ornato had recounted this story to me he had motioned toward his clavicles.”

I believe she related this as being told to her by Ornato with Engel in the room who did not object to what was described to her.

CASSIDY HUTCHINSON: When I returned to the White House, I walked upstairs towards the chief of staff's office, and I noticed Mr. Ornato lingering outside of the office. Once we had made eye contact, he quickly waved me to go into his office, which was just across the hall from mine. When I went in, he shut the door, and I noticed Bobby Engel, who was the head of Mr. Trump's security detail, sitting in a chair, just looking somewhat discombobulated and a little lost.

I looked at Tony and he had said, did you f'ing hear what happened in the beast? I said, no, Tony, I — I just got back. What happened? Tony proceeded to tell me that when the president got in the beast, he was under the impression from Mr. Meadows that the off the record movement to the Capitol was still possible and likely to happen, but that Bobby had more information.

So, once the president had gotten into the vehicle with Bobby, he thought that they were going up to the Capitol. And when Bobby had relayed to him we're not, we don't have the assets to do it, it's not secure, we're going back to the West Wing, the president had a very strong, a very angry response to that.

Tony described him as being irate. The president said something to the effect of I'm the f'ing president, take me up to the Capitol now, to which Bobby responded, sir, we have to go back to the West Wing. The president reached up towards the front of the vehicle to grab at the steering wheel. Mr. Engel grabbed his arm, said, sir, you need to take your hand off the steering wheel.

We're going back to the West Wing. We're not going to the Capitol. Mr. Trump then used his free hand to lunge towards Bobby Engel. And Mr. — when Mr. Ornato had recounted this story to me, he had motioned towards his clavicles.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

LIZ CHENEY: And was Mr. Engel in the room as Mr. Ornato told you this story?

CASSIDY HUTCHINSON: He was.

LIZ CHENEY: Did Mr. Engel correct or disagree with any part of this story from Mr. Ornato?

CASSIDY HUTCHINSON: Mr. Engel did not correct or disagree with any part of the story.

LIZ CHENEY: Did Mr. Engel or Mr. Ornato ever after that tell you that what Mr. Ornato had just said was untrue?

CASSIDY HUTCHINSON: Neither Mr. Ornato nor Mr. Engel told me ever that it was untrue.

Why did they just not interview the Secret Service agents... Who had previously testified and are still willing to testify again?

Why would they rely on hearsay?

I mean... you seem stubbornly daft to the reality here.

Despite the problem with the driver assault allegations.

Most observers thought the case for Trump facing felony charges increased after Tuesday’s hearing – particularly regarding Hutchinson’s testimony that Trump knew the crowd he sent to the Capitol was armed. Cheney’s disclosure that the committee believes Trump has tried to intimidate witnesses – including Hutchinson, according to Punchbowl News – also excited comment about possible charges

‘Things might get real, real bad’: key takeaways from latest January 6 hearing

Laurence Tribe, a Harvard law professor, said the new evidence against Trump was “devastating for inciting, aiding and abetting violent insurrection"

He should be prosecuted for at least three charges.

If the next few weeks we will see even more than you can imagine.

They have already interviewed them.

Quite some time ago.

The Secret Service agents (both the lead and the driver) gave their accounts of the situation in earlier interviews with the committee...

Neither of them suggested that Trump tried to grab the wheel or lunged at them.

But what do they know?

They were just there.

The Jan. 6 committee didn’t reach out to the Secret Service in the days before it aired explosive testimony about an alleged physical altercation between Donald Trump and his security detail on the day of the riot, according to an agency spokesperson.

In a blockbuster Tuesday hearing, former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson described being told that the “irate” then-president was so furious agents wouldn’t drive him to the Capitol on Jan. 6 that he “lunge[d]” toward the head of his detail.

Anthony Guglielmi, the service’s chief of communications, told POLITICO that select committee investigators did not ask Secret Service personnel to reappear or answer questions in writing in the 10 days before asking Hutchinson about the matter at the hearing.

“[W]e were not asked to reappear before the Committee in response to yesterday’s new information and we plan on formally responding on the record,” he wrote in an email. “We have and will continue to make any member of the Secret Service available.”

Meanwhile, back to shit that really matters -

The U.S. economy shrank at a 1.6 percent annual pace, the government said Wednesday, as inflation weighed on consumer spending.

This is the government’s third and final estimate of the path the economy took in the first three months of the year. The government’s first estimate had the economy shrinking 1.4 percent and the second estimate was a contraction of 1.5 percent. This was the first time the economy registered a negative rate of growth since early in 2020 when the pandemic and lockdowns took hold.

Consumer spending—the chief engine of U.S. economic growth—was much weaker than previously thought, suggesting that inflation was already weighing down the economy and raising the risks of a recession. Consumer spending was revised down from an estimated 3.1 increase to smaller increase of 1.8 percent.

Data showed consumers cut spending on goods such as food, clothing, and home furniture after adjusting for inflation.

The trade deficit soared in the first quarter and was largely responsible for dragging GDP into negative territory.

Americans remain deeply pessimistic about the state of the country and the economy. A view that is reflected in President Joe Biden’s approval rating, which continues to hover around 39%. About 9 in 10 Republicans disapprove, along with nearly three in 10 Democrats.

The national dissatisfaction is bipartisan. Most Americans, 85%, say the country is headed in the wrong direction. A majority of Republicans have been unhappy with the direction of the country since Biden’s election. Democrats had been positive about how things were going, but now 78% say the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Fox News flips on Donald Trump during Jan. 6 hearings

Jon Skolnik, Salon

June 29, 2022

After spending more than a year promoting Donald Trump's baseless claims of election fraud, Fox News appears to be changing its tune as the January 6 committee presents increasingly damning evidence of the former president's complicity in the Capitol riot.

As the committee probe has gone public, at least four Fox News hosts and one analyst have casted doubt over Trump's grandiose claims of fraud, for which there continues to be no evidence to speak of. Some have also questioned the former president's mental fitness, suggesting that Trump cannot be trusted to steer the country in 2024 after spreading such spurious conspiracy theories about 2020.

One such instance played out just last month, when Fox News guest host Sandra Smith, an apparent skeptic of Trump's claims from the start, engaged in a fiery exchange with Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., over the former president's legal failure to prove that he won in any states he lost.

"The courts are not the final arbiter of who wins federal election contests," Brooks told Smith, citing the film "2000 Mules," which bandies unsubstantiated claims that unnamed Democratic-aligned nonprofits engaged in a coordinated attempt to subvert the election.

"And that [film] has been looked at and fact-checked by multiple outlets, including Reuters, who have [reported] there isn't any proof that there was widespread voter fraud," Smith rebutted.

Roughly a week later, Fox News host Martha MacCallum, who at one point called the Capitol riot "a huge victory," echoed Smith's rhetoric, arguing that there was a "stunning" lack of evidence to support allegations of widespread fraud.

"The lack of evidence is the huge stunning clear moment here where these people are saying, 'Look I supported you, please give me something to work with,' and it simply doesn't materialize," MacCallum said, speaking of the select committee's fourth public hearing.

This week, Fox News host Brett Baier, one of the network's noted critics of Trump, also joined the chorus, arguing with a pro-Trump gubernatorial candidate that no evidence of fraud has emerged.

"I understand what you are saying," Baier told the MAGA-backed Kari Lake, who is running to unseat Arizona Republican Gov. Doug Ducey. "But there have been, as you know, more than 70 court cases where there was not evidence and there was not any state legislature or governor that failed to certify an election, including your own Republican Doug Ducey."

Meanwhile, other Fox News personalities have expressed concerns about Trump's mental facilities.

"Fox and Friends" host Brian Kilmeade, who reportedly had a direct line to the former president during the Capitol riot, said this week that Trump was "unhinged" in the aftermath of the election.

"The president was unhinged during that period," Kilmeade said in a "Media Buzz" segment. "I interviewed him at West Point, and he was kind enough to give me a few minutes. I've never seen him so angry. That was in between the election and Jan. 6."

Kilmeade also called it "the worst moment of Donald Trump's political career," adding: "I think how you lose in life defines who you are … A lot of times things don't work out, and are so-called unfair. Your team couldn't prove [the election was rigged], move on."

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell warned Wednesday that there is "no guarantee" the central bank will be able to bring inflation to heel without sacrifices in the job market, while reiterating policymakers' aim to achieve a soft landing in their effort to rein in surging prices.

Speaking at the European Central Bank's policy conference in Portugal, Powell said that supply and demand are "really out of balance in many parts of the U.S. economy," and pointed to the labor market as "being a big example of that."

He said those imbalances need to be evened out in order to bring inflation down.

"We think that there are pathways for us to achieve that, to achieve the path back to 2% inflation while still retaining sustaining a strong labor market. We believe we can do that. That is our aim," Powell said, before adding, "There's no guarantee we can do that."

First on CNN: Cassidy Hutchinson stands by her testimony amid pushback
Annie Grayer
By Jake Tapper and Annie Grayer, CNN

Updated 4:57 PM ET, Wed June 29, 2022

(CNN)Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, released a new statement Wednesday provided exclusively to CNN standing by her blockbuster testimony revealed in a hearing with the House select committee investigating January 6, in light of some pushback on her testimony.

"Ms. Hutchinson stands by all of the testimony she provided yesterday, under oath, to the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol,"
Hutchinson's counsel Jody Hunt and William Jordan said in the statement.

Hutchinson testified for nearly two hours on Tuesday as well as giving recorded depositions in advance of the hearing, where she vividly described her experience at the White House close to Meadows and then-President Donald Trump during the days leading up to and including the Capitol Hill riot. Hutchinson described how Trump and Meadows had been repeatedly warned in advance and on the day of the attack about the possibility of violence including from armed individuals at the rally.
While officials with the Secret Service as well as close to Trump have not disputed the overall characterization of Hutchinson's testimony, some are rebutting specific claims and descriptions.

Unlike Hutchinson's testimony, the limited denials were not made under oath.

Hutchinson testified she had been told that when Trump was informed by security that he would not be going to the Capitol on January 6, 2021, he lunged to the front of his vehicle and tried to turn the wheel with one hand while using his other hand to "lunge" at Robert Engel, the Secret Service agent in charge that day.

Hutchinson testified that she had been told this story by Tony Ornato, then-White House deputy chief of staff, and that Engel had been there as the story was told.

After the hearing, a Secret Service official familiar with the matter told CNN that Ornato denies telling Hutchinson that the former President grabbed the steering wheel or an agent on his detail.

Ornato is known to have a strong relationship with Trump and his team, having been granted an unusual waiver to suspend his time on the US Secret Service to serve as Trump's deputy White House chief of staff.

Engel had previously testified before the committee and described the interactions with Trump on January 6, including the former President's desire to travel to the Capitol, but Engel was not asked about an altercation or being assaulted, the official said.

The Secret Service, through the Department of Homeland Security Office of Legislative Affairs, notified the committee Tuesday afternoon that it will make the agents involved available to testify under oath, the official said, and that the agents are prepared to say under oath that the incident Hutchinson described did not occur.
