"At the same time, the suspect has made nonsensical statements, and Nara Prefectural Police are carefully investigating whether he is mentally competent to be held criminally responsible," the outlet reported.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former White House counsel Pat Cipollone arrived Friday on Capitol Hill for a private interview with the Jan. 6 committee about his role trying to prevent then-President Donald Trump from challenging the 2020 presidential election and joining the violent mob that laid siege to the Capitol.

Cipollone had been a sought-after witness after bombshell testimony revealed his apparently desperate and last-ditch efforts to prevent Trump’s actions. The panel was told he warned the defeated president would be charged with “every crime imaginable” if he went to the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, trying to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s election. He was subpoenaed for his testimony.

In a netshell:

Boris Johnson’s forced resignation shines a spotlight on what is wrong with the Republican Party.

In the U.K, a dysfunctional and scandal-ridden leader was actually deposed, gotten rid of, sent packing.

The GOP is incapable of doing that with Trump.

No matter what Trump has done, no mattter how obviously scandalous and criminal his past actions, the GOP does not yet see fit to cashew him.

That may change, however, as the Jan 6 hearings continue and it becomes even more obvious how criminal, illegal, and treasonous his actions were and still are.

It will not be necessary to convict Trump just because of what he has attempted to do in the past; he can be convicted on what he is still attempting to do.

Every day he renders himself caught in the very act.

Uncensored Roger said...

Cipollone’s central role came into focus during a surprise committee hearing last week when former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson described his repeated efforts to stop Trump from joining the mob at the Capitol.

Hutchinson said Cipollone urged her to persuade her boss, chief of staff Mark Meadows, not to let Trump go to the Capitol.

If he says that she was correct, his failure to stop the insurrection, or was involved in the planning, the Attorney General Merrick Garland may call a Grand Jury or like in Watergate he may file changes on Trump. Including Insurrection.

In what he called an “unprecedented action” made necessary because “President Biden refuses to do his job,” Gov. Greg Abbott has issued an executive order authorizing his state’s National Guard and the Texas Department of Public Safety to arrest immigrants who illegally cross the border between ports of entry and return them to Mexico.

“While President Biden refuses to do his job and enforce the immigration laws enacted by Congress, the State of Texas is once again stepping up and taking unprecedented action to protect Americans and secure our southern border,” Abbott said in a press release Thursday announcing the zero-tolerance policy.

Only the federal government is legally authorized to enforce immigration law. As legal justification, Abbott cites Article IV, § 4 of the US Constitution.

“[T]he United States . . . shall protect each [State in this Union] against Invasion,’ and thus has forced the State of Texas to build a border wall, deploy state military forces, and enter into agreements as described in Article I, § 10 of the U.S. Constitution to secure the State of Texas and repel the illegal immigration that funds the cartels,” said Abbott in the exectiuve order.

(CNN)Jacob Chansley, the so-called "QAnon Shaman," was sentenced to 41 months in prison for his role in the US Capitol riot.

The Justice Department had asked for Chansley to receive a harsh sentence as a way to set an example among the January 6 rioters, and prosecutors have positioned Chansley as emblematic of a barbaric crowd.

Since then, Chansley gained fame as the "QAnon Shaman," a figure known in the fringe online movement and for widely shared photos that captured him wearing face paint and a headdress inside the Senate chamber.
Judge Royce Lamberth has had Chansley held in jail since his arrest, despite his multiple attempts to gain sympathy and his release.

Other judges are likely to look to Lamberth's sentence as a possible benchmark, since Chansley is one of the first felony defendants among more than 660 Capitol riot cases to receive a punishment.

Prosecutor Kimberly Paschall used several videos to show Chansley's entrance into the Capitol building and Senate chamber, yelling along with the crowd. "That is not peaceful."

Paschall called his role as the "flag-bearer" of the mob "chaos" and "terrifying."

For more than 30 minutes, Chansley spoke to Lamberth about the impact jail has had on him, and the guilt he feels for breaking the law.
He said he was wrong to enter the Capitol on January 6, and that he is not an insurrectionist or domestic terrorist, but rather a "good man who broke the law."

"I was in solitary confinement because of me. Because of my decision.
I broke the law ... I should do what Gandhi would do and take responsibility," he says. "There's no ifs, ands or buts about it, that's what men of honor do." He promised to never have to be jailed again.
"I think your remarks are the most remarkable I've heard in 34 years," Lamberth told Chansley, calling his speech "akin to the kind of thing Martin Luther King would have said."

WASHINGTON—Pat Cipollone, Donald Trump’s former White House counsel, went to Capitol Hill on Friday to testify behind closed doors to the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Mr. Cipollone arrived at the O’Neill House Office Building on Friday morning and then proceeded to a room on the fifth floor.

Mr. Cipollone was present at many significant moments in the White House as Mr. Trump sought to cast doubt on the election result, witnesses have told the committee. His testimony could be among the most important of the committee’s more than 1,000 interviews in its yearlong investigation.

The House committee issued a subpoena to Mr. Cipollone late last month. Mr. Cipollone and his attorney didn’t respond to questions about whether he planned to claim that certain interactions with Mr. Trump are protected by privilege as White House counsel.

In a letter accompanying the subpoena, the committee noted that Mr. Cipollone had previously sat for an informal interview on April 13. In the weeks since then, the committee said it had obtained information about which Mr. Cipollone was “uniquely positioned to testify.” The letter said the committee was interested in information concerning Mr. Trump’s “awareness and involvement in activities undertaken to subvert the outcome” of the 2020 presidential election.

The panel has scheduled a daytime hearing for Tuesday, with a focus on activities of far-right fringe groups such as the the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers who entered the Capitol to disrupt the Electoral College certification.

Panel members previously have described plans for a final hearing to focus on 187 minutes it took then-President Donald Trump to tell rioters to leave the Capitol grounds and go home that day.

Committee member Jamie Raskin said Wednesday night during an online Lincoln Project forum the panel is also set to outline efforts to pressure then-Vice President Mike Pence to reject Electoral College votes from a handful of states that gave Joe Biden his election victory. Pence, who was the presiding officer of that congressional certification process, ultimately refused to do so on Jan. 6, 2021.

President Joe Biden took executive action Friday to protect access to abortion, as he faces mounting pressure from fellow Democrats to be more forceful on the subject after the Supreme Court ended a constitutional right to the procedure two weeks ago.

Biden outlined actions intended to try to mitigate some potential penalties women seeking abortion may face after the ruling but are limited in their ability to safeguard access to abortion nationwide.

Biden formalized instructions to the Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services to push back on efforts to limit the ability of women to access federally approved abortion medication or to travel across state lines to access clinical abortion services.

Biden’s executive order will also direct agencies to work to educate medical providers and insurers about how and when they are required to share privileged patient information with authorities — an effort to protect women who seek or utilize abortion services. He will also ask the Federal Trade Commission to take steps to protect the privacy of those seeking information about reproductive care online and establish an interagency task force to coordinate federal efforts to safeguard access to abortion.

President Biden signed an executive order on Friday aimed at protecting abortion access after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

Why it matters: Biden has faced intense pressure from his own party to act more aggressively on abortion. Many conservative states had "trigger laws" in place that banned or severely limited abortions in the days following the ruling and more bans are expected.

While the order will not restore access to abortion in the states that have already banned or restricted the procedure, it could enhance the administration's efforts to help people know what rights they do have.

What he's saying: Biden called the Supreme Court's ruling "extreme" and "totally wrongheaded," adding that "this was not a decision driven by the Constitution, ... this was not a decision driven by history."

"What we're witnessing wasn't a constitutional judgment, it was an exercise in raw political power."Biden also urged Americans to vote in order to codify Roe as federal law, saying that the Senate needs "two additional pro-choice senators" to be able to change the filibuster rules in order to do so.He pledged to veto a nationwide abortion ban if Republican lawmakers successfully pass such a bill in Congress."The moment a moment to restore the rights that have been taken away from us. This is the moment to protect our nation from an extremist agenda that is antithetical to everything we believe as Americans."

Driving the news: The Biden administration said the executive order would include "safeguarding access to reproductive health care services, including abortion and contraception," the White House said.

Biden is also directing the Department of Health and Human Services to take additional action to protect access to abortion medication, emergency medical care and contraception. The order seeks to address concerns over patient privacy and digital surveillance, including taking steps to protect consumers’ privacy when seeking information about reproductive health care services.

The administration will also convene volunteer lawyers to "encourage robust legal representation of patients, providers, and third parties lawfully seeking or offering reproductive health care services throughout the country." That representation could include helping to protect a patient's right to travel

The current investigation is focused on finding out the truth about the attempted coup and the insurrection on January 6th after which they will recommend reforms that might help prevent such a thing from happening again.

Today, the committee will be interviewing Pat Cipollone, the former White House counsel who was name-checked repeatedly by former chief of staff Mark Meadows' aide Cassidy Hutchinson in the last hearing. He had been "cooperating" before but had not testified under oath. He was finally subpoenaed and will do so in videotaped testimony that will no doubt be played in a future hearing. It's pretty clear that he will not follow in John Dean's, Nixon's White House Counsel's footsteps, and lay it all out without regard to that amorphous concept of executive privilege. Cipollone has been very reluctant. But it is possible that he still believes that it's wrong to lie under oath so one hopes that he will honestly answer questions that don't relate to policy, which is really the only area that executive privilege applies. Coups aren't covered. Neither are insurrections.

One of the biggest investigations into President Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election is heating up. Trump allies have been subpoenaed, a member of Congress has refused to cooperate and Trump has called the probe a witch hunt.

And no, I’m not talking about the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

Welcome to today’s Essential Politics newsletter. I’m Arit John, a national political reporter filling in for David Lauter, and today we’ll be taking a look at Fulton County Dist. Atty. Fani Willis’ investigation into Trump.

A special grand jury issued seven subpoenas to Trump allies on Tuesday, including Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudolph Giuliani. The jurors are also seeking testimony from John Eastman, Jenna Ellis, Cleta Mitchell and Kenneth Chesebro — lawyers who helped craft Trump’s strategy to overturn the election results — and a conservative pundit.

The Jan. 6 investigation has been getting the spotlight, but some legal experts have argued that the former president is most likely to face criminal charges in Georgia. The congressional committee can only make criminal referrals to the Justice Department. Willis has independent power to bring criminal charges against the former president and has already laid out what those might be.

This latest round of subpoenas aimed at Trump’s inner circle has only increased speculation about the scope of the investigation.

She also hasn’t ruled out a subpoena for Trump. “Anything’s possible,” she told NBC News this week.

Los Angeles Times reported.

WASHINGTON —

America’s employers shrugged off high inflation and weakening growth to add 372,000 jobs in June, a surprisingly strong gain that will likely spur the Federal Reserve to keep sharply raising interest rates to cool the economy and slow price increases.

The unemployment rate in June remained at 3.6% for a fourth straight month, the Labor Department said Friday, matching a near-50-year low that was reached before the pandemic struck in early 2020.

The robust pace of hiring shows that businesses still want to add workers to meet high customer demand — a trend that should ease concerns that the U.S. economy might be on the verge of a downturn. The durability of the job market suggests that the economy remains on firm footing, at least for now.

The persistent desire of many businesses to hire and grow is providing a bulwark against the likelihood that the economy will tip into recession over the next year. Even if a downturn does occur, the healthy job and pay growth of the past year could help keep it relatively brief and mild.

_____
If this continues it will match the longest economic recovery in history during the Obama administration.

Court rules some Trump financial records must be handed to House Oversight Committee

Reuters

July 08, 2022

By Jacqueline Thomsen

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Friday largely upheld a congressional subpoena seeking financial records from former President Donald Trump’s accounting firm Mazars, but said some of the lawmakers' requests went too far.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit unanimously ruled that the Democratic-controlled House Oversight Committee can obtain records from a period surrounding Trump's 2016 campaign and his time in office.

The court said the subpoena's scope was "overbroad" for many of the records, including some related to the federal lease for Trump's former Washington, D.C., hotel. It said lawmakers can only subpoena documents closely tied to legislation they are considering.

A lawyer for Trump and a Mazars spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Trump has decried the probe as politically motivated. Friday's opinion rejected or declined to take up several of Trump's legal arguments, including that the subpoenaed information could not be used for legislation.

The ruling allows the House committee to obtain some records connected to the Trump hotel lease, as well as records tied to allegations that Trump violated financial disclosure laws and may have breached the Constitution's "emoluments" clause, which prevents federal officeholders from accepting payments from foreign governments without congressional approval.

Are we already in a recession?

What is a Recession?

A recession is a macroeconomic term that refers to a significant decline in general economic activity in a designated region. It had been typically recognized as two consecutive quarters of economic decline, as reflected by GDP in conjunction with monthly indicators such as a rise in unemployment. However, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), which officially declares recessions, says the two consecutive quarters of decline in real GDP are not how it is defined anymore. The NBER defines a recession as a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales.1

I wrote at Politico today against the idiotic argument that DeSantis is somehow worse than Trump:

By any reasonable standard, DeSantis’ supposed sins are peccadilloes compared to those of Trump.

Trump tried to bully his vice president into changing or blocking the counting of the electoral votes and then sat contentedly as a braying mob targeted him; DeSantis ended Florida’s Covid strictures earlier than most other states.

Trump may or may not have lunged at the steering wheel of his SUV as it took him back to the White House on Jan. 6 instead of to the U.S. Capitol; DeSantis signed a bill to prevent kids from being taught about sexual orientation and gender identity in public schools in grades K-3.

Trump has continued to promote conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and endorse candidates who believe or pretend to believe in them; DeSantis criticized Anthony Fauci.

Joe's low: Biden approval falls below Trump’s worst point

Rasmussen Reports's daily tracking poll put Biden’s approval rating at 37% today. Trump’s approval rating never fell below 38% in four years of Rasmussen polling.

Maybe worse, just 65% of Democrats approve of Biden, another record low. It had been hovering in the low 70s.

The White House has tried to fix his steady polling decline with more travel and speeches by Biden and staff shake-ups, but nothing has worked. And now, some Democrats are distancing themselves from Biden as they seek to keep their jobs in the election.

The nation’s dissatisfaction with Biden appears to be affecting everything in his world, from the stalled economy and surging inflation to the 2022 midterm congressional elections.

In two related surveys, Rasmussen today revealed a widening 8-point gap on the generic 2022 ballot, the latest showing an increase in support for Republicans. And the outfit also said that consumer confidence has fallen to the lowest level in eight years.

Just 19% rate the economy as good to excellent, and 69% expect “a worsening economy, up seven points from June,” said the analysis in news that could make the congressional ballot gap between Democrats and Republicans even worse.

Currently, 48% would vote for a Republican, 40% for a Democrat. That gap spread a remarkable 3 points in just one week, said Rasmussen's analysis for the survey, sponsored by columnist Miranda Devine, the author of the book on first son Hunter Biden Laptop From Hell.

The pollster explained what the gap can mean for voting. The analysis said, “In July 2018, before voters handed Democrats their first House majority in eight years, Democrats held a six-point advantage (46% to 40%) in the generic ballot question. As the November 2018 midterms neared, the margin was a statistical dead heat — Republicans 46%, Democrats 45% — in the final poll before Democrats won a slim House majority while Republicans gained Senate seats to maintain control of that chamber.”

Now with a widening gap, chances are growing even slimmer that Biden will be able to keep his slim majority on Capitol Hill.

You don't get to decide what is good or bad or right or wrong.

That is up to the American public as a whole.

YOU JUST SHOWED DISLOYALTY TO TRUMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure Reverend....
If you say so!

I don't say so. Trump does. According to Trump, when Pence sided with the Constitution and the American public as a whole instead of Trump, Pence showed disloyalty to Trump.

Wisconsin’s Illegal Ballot Drop Box Operation Further Proves 2020 Was Not ‘Most Secure Election In History’

The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled the unmanned drop boxes used to collect absentee ballots during the 2020 presidential election are illegal.

As if we needed more proof that the 2020 election was not “the most secure election in history,” the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Friday that the unmanned drop boxes used to collect absentee ballots during the 2020 presidential election are illegal.

That matters because the drop boxes, which were funded by one of Mark Zuckerberg’s election meddling pet projects, collected absentee votes in five of the swing state’s biggest cities for a political race that was decided by only about 20,000 votes.

In the wake of the 2020 election, Democrats and their cronies in the corrupt corporate media repeatedly claimed that there was no way that the U.S. voting system could be compromised. Despite the growing evidence of a manipulated election, they released reports and studies that claimed that voter fraud is rare and that there were no systematic voting issues in states.

Anyone who disagreed with their conclusions was immediately smeared for touting “baseless” and “unfounded” conspiracy theories rooted in a “big lie.”

“Election Security Experts Contradict Trump’s Voting Claims,” The New York Times blared in a headline just a couple of weeks after Election Day.

Of course, these were the same class of experts who signed a letter five years ago, when Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election, claiming that U.S. elections were vulnerable and had some of the same weaknesses that they dismiss now.

Okay Reverend...

and what does that have to do with me telling Roger that he doesn't get to decide right or wrong or good or bad?

According to what I see here... it sounds like you secretly want to date Trump? What's up with that?

This destroyed your accusations.

S. prosecutors leveled new accusations Friday against the leader of the Oath Keepers and alleged members who have been charged with seditious conspiracy in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, saying one co-conspirator came to Washington with explosives and detailing allegations that a co-defendant kept a “death list” with the name of a Georgia election official.

The allegations came days before the Jan. 6 House committee is set to hold its next hearing Tuesday, which is expected to explore connections between extremist groups accused of playing key roles in the violence at the Capitol and former president Donald Trump’s effort to overturn the 2020 election through false claims of voter fraud.

In a 28-page filing, prosecutors said a law enforcement search on Jan. 19, 2021, of the home of charged co-defendant Thomas Caldwell, a retired Navy intelligence officer from Berryville, Va., recovered a document that included the words “DEATH LIST” handwritten across the top with the name of a Georgia election official and a purported family member of the official. Both were targets of baseless accusations that they were involved in voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, prosecutors said.

They planned to kill Georgians
