WaPo implies something about Trump and Garland that simply isn't true...

WaPo reports that the DOJ has been investigating Donald Trump as part of their 2020 election probe but also dishonestly implies that he has been "targeted" or is a "target".

To be perfectly clear there is no ambiguity regarding whether someone is or isn't a "target" in a criminal investigation. Unlike the term "recession" (which liberals now want to redefine) - this is something with a pretty concrete meaning. You cannot really "change" that meaning without really changing the implication.

When an individual is targeted by the Federal Government they receive a literal "target letter". This letter will inform them that they are under criminal investigation, will supply the crime(s) that they are being investigated for, and will offer that there is a sitting grand jury and that they are at least considering an indictment. These letters generally come with an invitation to meet with prosecutors regarding the case at hand.

More to the point, it is pretty much unheard of that an indictment would come from the Federal Government without a target letter being sent prior to the indictment. So if someone has received  no target letter then they are generally not in danger of any indictments. While the WaPo article indicates that the DOJ is targeting Trump, there is no actual indication that such a letter from the DOJ has been sent or even being considered. To be clear, not every target letter ends up with a prosecution, but pretty much all federal prosecutions start with that target letter.

So would they be "investigating" Trump?

Hard to argue that they could be investigating the so-called 2020 election issues (alternate electors, etc) and not include Trump in that investigation to some degree. So there is no news (much less a bombshell) to consider that whatever Garland and gang are stumbling around doing right now probably includes to at least some peripheral concept the President "under investigation".

But then again, Trump has been under investigation now by authorities for a variety of things since the summer of 2016. I don't believe that a day has gone by when there wasn't some form of investigation taking place.  From the Russian collusion hoax, to the Stormy Daniels campaign finance hoax, to the SDNY tax fraud hoax, to the Ukraine phone call investigation, to the current NY civil investigation, to the Georgia dog and pony show, to whatever.... this has been non-stop since Trump announced he was running for President.

In fact, it would be news (bombshell news in my humble opinion) if we could report one day that there was no ongoing investigation into the former President. Seriously, that would be news!

The reporting came down the same night of Attorney General Merrick Garland’s sit-down interview with NBC’s Lester Holt.

Garland was asked about division in the country and whether it was a factor in the DOJ’s thinking on potentially bringing criminal charges against a former president.

“We intend to hold everyone, anyone who was criminally responsible for the events surrounding Jan. 6, for any attempt to interfere with the lawful transfer of power from one administration to another, accountable,” Garland replied. “That’s what we do.”

More than 140 Capitol police and DC Metropolitan police officers were injured while defending the US Capitol, according to official figures. Officer Caroline Edwards told the January 6 committee: “I was slipping in people’s blood. I was catching people as they fell. It was carnage, it was chaos.” In the days and weeks after the attack, five officers who had served at the Capitol on January 6 died.

In recent months, the various investigations into Jan. 6 have increasingly zeroed in on the “fake” electors for President Donald Trump. In states that Trump lost, the fake electors were people who claimed they were duly chosen — something he later tried to leverage to get Vice President Mike Pence to help overturn the election on that fateful day.

But both when they were designated on Dec. 14, 2020, and since, these fake electors have almost always been described as a contingency plan. Dec. 14 was the elector deadline, and the idea was supposedly that they needed to be in place just in case the election results were changed before Jan. 6. Perhaps Trump and Co. later “misuse[d]” the fake electors to try to overturn the election regardless, as Georgia’s fake electors suggested last week in court, but the fake electors themselves shouldn’t be held responsible for that if they had no knowledge of that plan.

New evidence, though, suggests that at least some involved might have understood the fake-elector plan differently — from very early in the process, including the former President Trump 😉

For the first time in history.

The Justice Department is investigating President Donald Trump’s actions as part of its criminal probe of efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, according to four people familiar with the matter.

Prosecutors who are questioning witnesses before a grand jury — including two top aides to Vice President Mike Pence — have asked in recent days about conversations with Trump, his lawyers, and others in his inner circle who sought to substitute Trump allies for certified electors from some states Joe Biden won, according to two people familiar with the matter. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

The prosecutors have asked hours of detailed questions about meetings Trump led in December 2020 and January 2021; his pressure campaign on Pence to overturn the election; and what instructions Trump gave his lawyers and advisers about fake electors and sending electors back to the states, the people said. LOL

The adults are in charge

House Dems punt on assault weapons and funding the police

The caucus currently lack the votes to pass a package of bills that would ban so-called assault weapons and offer additional funding to local police departments.

Snip

Pelosi confirmed those plans to reporters Wednesday, acknowledging that the caucus has always planned to return when, or if, the Senate is able to complete work on a sweeping prescription drug and health care funding package: “The recognition that we have to come back … has made our plans a little bit different.”

The package of bills was intended to satisfy moderates — with measures to invest in local policing — as well as progressives, with the first vote to ban semi-automatic weapons since 1994. But other factions in the caucus, including the CBC, said they were skeptical of the timing of the policing legislation with only months remaining until the midterms. Progressives, too, demanded more safeguards placed on the grants to law enforcement organizations.

“We have a broad-based caucus that has multiple interests,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said as he left a closed-door meeting Wednesday morning. “The overwhelming majority want to make sure that people understand we want safe communities.”

Instead, the House will pivot its attention to a “big cat” public safety bill, a “Tiger King”-inspired bill from activist Carole Baskin, along with other noncontroversial legislation. Those will be the last votes for at least a week, as the House heads on its August recess and awaits Senate action on the drug pricing and health care bill.

Too funny even the RNC has had enough of Trump.
Republican leaders who worry that Donald Trump could hurt their midterm chances by announcing a presidential run too soon are hoping he'll be dissuaded from doing so by the prospect of losing hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal payments, according to an RNC official.

Since October 2021, the Republican National Committee has paid nearly $2 million to law firms representing Trump as part of his defense against personal litigation and government investigations.

But an RNC official told ABC News that as soon as Trump would announce he is running for president, the payments would stop because the party has a "neutrality policy" that prohibits it from taking sides in the presidential primary.

In January, RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel said, "The party has to stay neutral."

"I'm not telling anybody to run or not to run in 2024," she added. However she has since reaffirmed that Trump "still leads the party."

RNC officials would not comment on the record for this story. Representatives for Trump also declined to comment.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. has offered a deal to Russia aimed at bringing home WNBA star Brittney Griner and another jailed American, Paul Whelan, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday. In a sharp reversal of previous policy, Blinken also said he expects to speak with his Kremlin counterpart for the first time since before Russia invaded Ukraine to discuss the deal and other matters.

Blinken's comments marked the first time the U.S. government has publicly revealed any concrete action it has taken to secure the release of Griner, who was arrested on drug-related charges at a Moscow airport in February and testified Wednesday at her trial. Though it is unclear if the proposal will be enough for Russia to release the Americans, the public acknowledgment of the offer at a time when the U.S. has otherwise shunned Russia reflects the mounting pressure on the administration over Griner and Whelan and its determination to get them home.

“We put a substantial proposal on the table weeks ago to facilitate their release. Our governments have communicated repeatedly and directly on that proposal, and I'll use the conversation to follow up personally and, I hope, to move us toward a resolution," Blinken said.

The major milestone opens the door for party lawmakers to begin work as soon as next week to advance a signature component of President Biden’s agenda that has been stalled for seven months — one that could carry vast implications for Democrats in the 2022 election.

In a statement, Manchin did not share specific elements of the agreement. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) “announced that he had struck a deal with Democratic leaders on a domestic spending package that includes climate and energy programs and tax increases, less than two weeks after abruptly upending hopes for such a deal this summer,”
the New York Times reports.

“In a statement, Mr. Manchin, who had been his party’s main holdout on an expansive social policy, climate and tax package, confirmed his support for the measure in a statement that did not provide detail on its precise elements. But in the statement, he signaled support for climate and energy programs, as well as some tax provisions, all of which he had previously suggested he could not support because of concerns about inflation.”

“It was not clear what had changed his mind about the plan, which only weeks ago he had said he could not back until he saw more economic data next month.”

Washington Post:
“The new agreement opens the door for party lawmakers to try to advance the measure as soon as next week, capping off months of debate, delay and acrimony that some Democrats came to see as detrimental to their political fate ahead of this fall’s elections.”

The Manchin plan pays for itself

The nascent deal would generate $313 billion in new revenue over ten years by increasing the corporate minimum tax to 15%, according to a one-page summary distributed by Manchin's office.

It would bring in an additional $124 billion from enhanced Internal Revenue Service enforcement. And in a major blow to the private equity industry, the agreement calls for another $14 billion by treating so-called "carried interest" as regular income and taxing it at a higher rate.

For the climate provisions, the proposed package would spend $369 billion, while providing another $64 billion to shore up the Affordable Care Act for three years.

That would leave an additional $300 billion for deficit reduction.

Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) on Wednesday reached a deal with Democratic leaders on legislation that aims to lower health-care costs, combat climate change and reduce the federal deficit, a massive potential breakthrough for President Biden’s long-stalled economic agenda.

The new agreement, brokered between Manchin and Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), opens the door for party lawmakers to try to advance the measure in the coming weeks. It caps off months of fierce debate, delay and acrimony, a level of infighting that some Democrats came to see as detrimental to their political fate ahead of this fall’s elections.

Under the deal, Manchin agreed to support roughly $433 billion in new investments, much of which is focused on climate change and energy production. In total, Democrats say their proposal — now known as the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 — could lower energy costs, increase clean energy production and reduce carbon emissions roughly 40 percent by 2030.

In a joint statement, Manchin and Schumer said: “The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 will make a historic down payment on deficit reduction to fight inflation, invest in domestic energy production and manufacturing, and reduce carbon emissions by roughly 40% by 2030.”

Democrats say the bill will generate $739bn through a 15% corporate minimum tax, prescription drug savings and other means. It excludes surtaxes on people making at least $10m a year, ending Democrats’ push to make the wealthiest Americans pay more taxes.

The proposal would invest $396bn in energy security and fighting climate change, and $64bn to bolster healthcare. Manchin also indicated that provisions to reform the permitting process for energy infrastructure, including gas pipelines, would be included in the deal.

CNN has described the accord as “a major boost to Democrats,” but as professional Biden Administration cheerleaders, it’s hard to take their word seriously. As we’ve repeatedly discovered in recent years, the full effects of legislation don’t become apparent until sometimes years later, often because lawmakers don’t even know exactly what they’re passing.

New details about this “Inflation Reduction Act” will continue to emerge.

Let’s hope Manchin hasn’t sold us out.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

There was no immediate explanation why Manchin had suddenly agreed to the far broader package. In December, his resistance derailed a wide-ranging $3.5 trillion, 10-year social and environment bill that was Biden’s top domestic priority.

But the announcement suddenly presents President Biden and Democrats with the prospect of pushing a major achievement through Congress in the runup to November congressional elections in which Republicans have seemed strongly positioned to capture House control and possibly a majority of the Senate as well.

He knows how dangerous the Republican Party of today is

Scott, you should apply for the job!

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said Wednesday he does not believe the U.S. economy is in a recession as the central bank raised rates further to fight inflation.

“I do not think the U.S. is currently in a recession and the reason is there are too many areas of the economy that are performing too well,” Powell said at a press conference following the Fed’s decision to raise rates by 0.75 percentage point for a second consecutive time. “This is a very strong labor market ... it doesn’t make sense that the economy would be in a recession with this kind of thing happening.”

“This is a very strong labor market ... it doesn’t make sense that the economy would be in a recession with this kind of thing happening.”

But yet... we are dumping in the Markets, dumping in GDP, inflation is skyrocketing, wages are flat, disposable income is down, and we are starting to see layoffs in anticipation of further economic decline.

Love the manner in which this clown tells us there are "too many areas" doing well but can only cite one. Unemployment is low? Well that has been driven by more people (baby boomers) leaving the workforce than people coming in.

It's not low unemployment because things are going so well... it's a shortage of people about to fill jobs. My wife runs a fabrication and installation company and they cannot find either the technical workers to work their machines (which require training) or find basic workers to do the grunt work.

My company cannot hire or keep high tech people because there is such a shortage of well trained people. We end up hiring almost everyone in other countries.

That is not a sign of a good job market. But an extremely problematic one where we could see businesses collapse due to lack of workers.

Donald Trump, is dangerous.

He came into power sowing division and stoking a racist conspiracy theory about Barack Obama’s birthplace.

He left office spreading a dangerous conspiracy theory that the election was stolen.

The Justice Department revealed on Wednesday that it had obtained a new search warrant to access the contents of attorney John Eastman’s phone, which it seized from the pro-Trump lawyer last month before transporting it to a lab in Virginia.

The development, filed in court via Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Windom, came in response to a legal effort by Eastman to block investigators from “rummaging” through his files. The Justice Department had indicated that it would obtain a warrant that would limit investigators’ access to “evidence of specific federal crimes or specific types of material.”

My wife subscribes to Der Spiegel in German which is a sort of a more classy, more erudite TIME magazine. I was reading it the other day and noticed how very similar the German economy is to ours, many of the same problems, same challenges, etc.

And thats Biden's fault?

Another real Republican is cooperation with the January 6th insurrection committee.

“The House select committee investigating January 6, 2021, has been engaging with former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and he could sit for a closed-door deposition with the panel as soon as this week,” CNN reports..

Trump will call him a RINO because he is probably going to try to become the next President.

They might turn the Republican Party into the modern era Whig Party.

Dozens of former Republican and Democratic officials will announce a new national political third party to appeal to millions of voters they say are dismayed with what they see as America’s dysfunctional two-party system.

The new party, called Forward, will initially be co-chaired by former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang and Christine Todd Whitman, the former Republican governor of New Jersey.

AND they are brave enough to stand up to Putin's Russia, even if it does cost them this winter.

This is why the crazy Jordan isn't on the January 6th committee he just said.

New whistleblower disclosures made by multiple FBI employees from different field offices indicate that the Biden Administration’s narrative may be misleading. We have received accusations that FBI agents are bolstering the number of cases of DVEs to satisfy their superiors. For example, one whistleblower explained that because agents are not finding enough DVE cases, they are encouraged and incentivized to reclassify cases as DVE cases even though there is minimal, circumstantial evidence to support the reclassification. Another whistleblower—who led at least one high profile domestic terrorism investigation—stated that a field office Counterterrorism Assistant Special Agent in Charge and the FBI’s Director of the Counterterrorism Division have pressured agents to move cases into the DVE category to hit self-created performance metrics. According to whistleblowers, the FBI uses these metrics to dispense awards and promotions. Every whistleblower has called it an environment of “pressure” within the FBI.

These whistleblower allegations that the FBI is padding its domestic violent extremist data cheapens actual examples of violent extremism. This information also reinforces our concerns—about which we have written to you several times—regarding the FBI’s politicization under your leadership. As we have detailed, multiple whistleblowers have disclosed how the Biden FBI is conducting a “purge” of FBI employees holding conservative views. You have ignored these concerns. It appears instead that the FBI is more focused on classifying investigations to meet a woke left-wing agenda.

Labor Sector is not strong as Powell said.

President Trump labor participation rate 63.4 %

Joe Failure = 62.2 %

Add that 1.2 % back into the workforce.

She was a direct witness to the former President's action.

Cassidy Hutchinson, a former top adviser to then-President Donald Trump's chief of staff Mark Meadows, has recently cooperated with the Department of Justice investigation into the events of Jan. 6, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The Justice Department reached out to her following her testimony a month ago before the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, the sources said.

Hutchinson becomes the latest known figure with knowledge of the actions of top Trump administration officials on Jan. 6 to cooperate with the Justice Department's inquiry.

A lawyer for Hutchinson did not respond to ABC News' request for comment. Officials with the DOJ also declined to comment, as did a spokesperson for the Jan. 6 committee.

MORE: Key takeaways from Cassidy Hutchinson's bombshell testimony to Jan. 6 committee

Hutchinson publicly testified before the Jan. 6 committee earlier this month, spending some two hours recounting details about what she said went on behind the scenes at the White House leading up to, during, and after the Jan. 6 attack.

Her account included descriptions of events she both witnessed directly and other events she said were described to her.

Eastman was 'linchpin' of illegal elector scheme — and now his cooperation could sink Trump: Whitewater prosecutor

Matthew Chapman

July 27, 2022

On Wednesday's edition of CNN's "OutFront," Paul Rosenzweig, a former attorney who worked on the Whitewater investigation of President Bill Clinton in the 1990s, outlined how important far-right lawyer John Eastman is to the investigation of the plot to overthrow the 2020 presidential election.

Eastman turning to cooperate with the Justice Department, argued Rosenzweig, would be a massive blow to Trump — and a groundbreaking step for investigators.

"I want to play, Paul, some of the testimony that we heard about the importance of John Eastman," said anchor Erin Burnett, showing clips of Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers and Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel testifying Eastman was directing the scheme. "So Paul, how much legal trouble could Eastman be in? And what do you think the goal is here to get him to flip? How much trouble could he get Trump?"

"Well, I think that John Eastman is in many ways the linchpin of this investigation," said Rosenzweig. "You know, the idea behind overturning the election wasn't Donald Trump's. It was John Eastman. He developed it, he built it. so he's in a significant amount of legal jeopardy now ... and if poor John Eastman could determine that he would be better off working with the Department of Justice than staying on Team Trump, that would be an immensely important step for the investigation."

Eastman's plot was to persuade Vice President Mike Pence to use the fake electors to throw out the actual ones voters had selected in several key states, throwing the election to Trump.

His plan was broadly regarded as illegal by many experts, and even Eastman himself said in private it wasn't based on actual law.
