'I'd be advising my client to tell their family I'm looking at jail time': Mueller prosecutor on the FBI's Trump raid

Sarah K. Burris

August 08, 2022

Former Justice Department prosecutor Andrew Weissmann, who worked on special counsel Robert Mueller's team, explained on MSNBC that if he was advising a client facing what former President Donald Trump is, there would be a strong warning.

"If I were Donald Trump's lawyer right now, thank God I'm not, I would be advising my client to be telling [their] family, 'I am looking at jail time, and we should make plans accordingly.'"

After House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) threatened Attorney General Merrick Garland, Weissmann said that he should just keep his head down and keep doing his job.

"That is such a palpably false statement, the comment from Mr. McCarthy that he is seen enough," said Weissmann. "One of the things that none of us has seen is the warrant, an application to the court. It's very important to remember this was not a break-in, this was not a raid, this was not the attorney general of the United States deciding willy-nilly on his own that he was going to do the search. A court had to approve the search here based on, as you point out Lawrence, evidence. The evidence had to show that there was probable cause of a crime. That is the way our judicial system works, and that is what happened here."

While McCarthy may want to hold a public hearing of Garland and demand documents, what the Republicans might ultimately end up doing is drawing additional attention to what Trump stole or attempted to destroy.

Former President Trump met with investigators months before the FBI search on Monday, sources told CNN.Investigators asked where Trump stored his documents and attorneys showed them a basement room. After the meeting, Trump's attorneys received a letter asking to secure the room, sources told CNN.

Months before the raid on his Mar-a-Lago residence, former President Donald Trump's lawyers recieved instructions to "secure the room" in which he stored his documents, sources told CNN.

The sources told CNN aides added a padlock in order to secure the room.

On Monday, Trump confirmed reports that the FBI executed a search warrant at his Palm Beach, Florida, residence.

Sources told ABC News the search was related to 15 boxes of documents Trump took from the White House to Mar-a-Lago resort following the end of his presidency. During the FBI's search Monday morning, the agency was verifying that no other documents were still at the resort after the National Archives retrieved the documents in February, a source told CNN.

Investigators met with Trump's lawyers at Mar-a-Lago months ago to evaluate the documents Trump had taken during his time at the White House, CNN reported. Trump was also present during the meeting, albeit momentarily, sources told CNN.

The CNN report does not specify when exactly investigators met with Trump, but said Trump aides were interviewed about the documents by the FBI in April and May.

During Monday's search of his office, Trump was at Trump Tower in New York City.

After investigators asked to see where Trump stored his documents, attorneys for the former president took investigators to the basement room at Mar-a-Lago. Days later, the attorneys received a letter asking to lock that same room, sources told CNN. The report does not mention who sent the letter.

Representatives for Trump did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

It probably will meet the deadline you posted

Hunter Biden Breathes Sigh Of Relief As FBI Raid Team Passes By His House On Way to Mar-A-Lago

POLITICS · Aug 8, 2022

WEST PALM BEACH, FL — High-level Chinese asset and sex trafficker Hunter Biden breathed a sigh of relief this evening as an FBI raid team passed by his West Palm Beach vacation home to raid Donald Trump's residence in Mar-a-Lago.

"Whew! Thought they had me for a minute there," Biden sighed, according to sources before going back to smoking crack with a hooker on a pile of cash freshly delivered by Chinese agents. "Glad to know the FBI is still working for my Dad!"

The FBI arrived at Mar-a-Lago shortly after, but things got awkward after the FBI raid team ran into the FBI evidence planting team due to a scheduling mistake.

Rank-and-file House Republicans are likely to face further questions about the Mar-a-Lago raid and its effect on their plans for a likely House takeover when they return to Washington for a planned Friday vote on Democrats’ party-line climate, tax and health care bill.

While some senior Republicans privately brushed off conservatives’ calls for an investigation, noting that they need to see proof the search was a stunt rather than a by-the-books act, McCarthy’s tweet Monday night raises the political stakes of the moment considerably for the entire conference.

And even one prominent former Freedom Caucus member — turned potential Trump 2024 presidential primary rival — weighed in too.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis attacked the Mar-a-Lago search on Twitter with similar Third World references, calling it “another escalation in the weaponization of federal agencies against the Regime’s political opponents” and adding a dig at Democrats for seeking to boost IRS enforcement to help pay for their domestic agenda.

“Banana Republic,” he tweeted.

The U.S. House of Representatives Oversight Committee at that time announced it was expanding an investigation into Trump's actions and asked the Archives to turn over additional information. Trump previously confirmed that he had agreed to return certain records to the Archives, calling it "an ordinary and routine process."

It is "particularly urgent" political adviser Dick Morris, told Newsmax to "for us to elect Donald Trump president again. Our entire country depends upon it. A system of government depends upon it. Here's the demo every banana republic in the world -- and I've worked all over the world -- arrests their former presidents . They go to jail and they get tried, and inevitably, they get found guilty, and they usually get condemned to house arrest. And if we start doing that, me, United States we are sunk."

“What’s the difference between this and Watergate?” Donald Trump raged in a statement Monday night after FBI agents raided Mar-A-Lago.
_____

Well, as a Watergate and FBI historian, four things stand out to me:

1) The idea the FBI launched a raid on a former president would have been approved and monitored at the highest level of the Justice Department; hard to even imagine how high the bar of probable cause must've been for the Bureau to initiate such a politically sensitive search.

2) A search warrant means an independent federal judge ALSO signed off on the probable cause and, independently, believes evidence there was likely a crime committed AND that more evidence would be found at Mar-a-Lago. That's huge too.

3) The fact the search apparently didn't leak until basically when word came from Donald Trump himself shows the FBI and the Justice Department conducted this search by the book and a high degree of integrity. No leaks? Impressive. Surely only a small team knew inside DOJ.

4) Taken together, this is one of the most significant, sensitive, and politically explosive actions the US Justice Department and FBI has ever taken—one of a tiny handful of times it's ever investigated a president.

Bottom line: The FBI & DOJ must've known they had the goods. --Garret M. Graff, on Twitter

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT, DONALD TRUMP, FBI

A SIMPLE DESULTORY PHILIPPIC

With the FBI raid and New York Times write-up by Maggie Haberman, Ben Protess, and Adam Goldman, President Trump was James O’Keefed yesterday. O’Keefe was raided, humiliated, and Times’d over Ashley Biden’s diary. The government is out to get him.

So it is with President Trump, right down to the Times coordination with the national security establishment (“according to multiple people familiar with the investigation”). Thinking that Trump had been O’Keefed put me in mind of Paul Simon’s “A Simple Desultory Philippic (Or How I Was Robert McNamara’d Into Submission).” Lacking Simon’s gift and the time to work up something worthy, I offer this to get the ball rolling in a timely fashion:

I would like to see the warrant under which the search was conducted before further comment. This episode reminds us, however, that the FBI and FISA court need to be disestablished.

Roger thinks that this is fascist rhetoric because he understands history 🙄

Off topic but another example of competent leadership by Sleepy Joe Biden 😴

WASHINGTON, Aug 9 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden on Tuesday will sign a bill to provide $52.7 billion in subsidies for U.S. semiconductor production and research and to boost efforts to make the United States more competitive with China's science and technology efforts.

Of course the Chinese will try to find a way to dominate the market .

IOW, the real reason for the FBI raid was not classified documents. The real reason was the capitol riot and the conspiracy illegally to ovethrow an election.
