Flynn's lawyer calls investigation "Witch Hunt"

Media demands this proves Trump is guilty of something?

Many media outlets are suddenly beside themselves attempting to correlate a request by General Flynn's attorney for immunity in exchange for testifying to the concept that somehow this is proof of Trump/Russian collusion.

The reality here is that General Flynn was actually fired for lying about conversations he had with a Russian ambassador. At this point in time, the fact that his conversation included some back and forth on the sanctions that had been put in place by the Obama Administration is probably the closest thing to any "evidence" of any "collusion"... and even that is awful weak evidence of anything other than business as usual for an incoming national security adviser talking to a foreign ambassador.

The request for protection from immunity was made along with the following statement:
“No reasonable person would submit to questioning in such a highly politicized, witch hunt environment without assurances against unfair prosecution."
Here is the deal folks. If Trump/Pence/Flynn and gang were really colluding with the Russians, does anyone honestly believe that Trump and Pence would get together and "fire" General Flynn for actions that many believed were more than defensible?  You wouldn't "out" one of your co-conspirators, and promote the possibility that this person would eventually turn on you.

You can draw your conclusions that Donald Trump is a bumbling oaf of a child who cannot function his way out of a wet paper sack and just accidentally became President... or you can demand that he is an diabolical international genius mastermind criminal who conspired with world leaders to undermine our entire election process and take control of our Federal Government; singlehandedly outsmarting and eluding the Obama administration, the FBI, the CIA, the NSA, and everyone else during the process.

But he can't be both.

There is nothing new about House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes leaving the panel’s secure room beneath the Capitol Building and heading to the White House complex or a related facility nearby to view raw intelligence, The Daily Caller News Foundation’s Investigative Group has learned.

For years, intelligence committee chiefs have trekked to the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue or to an intelligence agency to view such super sensitive intelligence material, because the congressional secure room can’t handle such material.

This is the key part of the lawyer's letter.

General Flynn certainly has a story to tell, and he very much wants to tell it, should the circumstances permit.

Out of respect for the Committees, we will not comment right now on the details of discussion between counsel for General Flynn and the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, other than to confirm that those discussions have taken place.

But it is important to acknowledge the circumstances in which those discussions are occurring.

Notwithstanding his life of national service, the media are awash with unfounded allegations, outrageous claims of treason, and vicious innuendo directed against him.

He is now the target of unsubstantiated public demands by Members of Congress and other political critics that he be criminally investigated.

No reasonable person, who has the benefit of advice from counsel, would submit to questioning in such a highly politicized, witch hunt environment without assurances against unfair prosecution.

The first part is interesting. "a story to tell". He was one of the first Trump supporters, and he had the ear of Mr Trump. He was his key source of military affairs, and intelligence community for Mr Trump. He lead a "lock her up" chant at the Republican convention.

The second is lawyer speak for he's not guilty, but there is a witch hunt that might find him guilty, even if he's innocent.

Every day, something comes out that Mr Trump or his staff, may have been in contact with the Russian government. Contact with foreign countries is not unusual. But despite the claim by Vladimir Putin, who denied that the Russians were trying to influence and damage the credibility of our electoral system, there is evidence that the did try to influence the election, and damage the credibility of our election.

So far we have not seen conclusive evidence that they worked together. So, one way or another, he should be granted immunity.

I personally think that a special investigation should be directed to provide the truth, no matter what the data takes it.

The Senatorial committee looks like they are going to conduct a bipartisan investigation, as the Constitution gives them the responsibility to oversee the executive branch. I was impressed with the joint news conference. The grown-ups made me comfortable. So I would accept this because of who are in charge, are going to follow where the data takes them.

https://www.thenation.com/article/how-to-topple-a-dictator/

Do you consider Donald Trump to be an aspiring authoritarian?

There are certainly demagogic aspects of his behavior: disregard for institutional limits of his own authority, disregard for democratic norms and human rights, bullying and threatening political opponents, scapegoating of the vulnerable, mischaracterizing opposition to his plans as treachery, and a seeming indifference to understanding the US Constitution. But it’s also important to recognize the broader authoritarian currents in the American polity that put him in power.

What is the typical playbook of an authoritarian?

There is a pretty typical authoritarian playbook when it comes to weakening civil society. It’s basically a divide-and-rule strategy.

First there are strategies to reinforce elite loyalty through purges, paying off an inner entourage, and co-opting oppositionists through threats and bribes.

Second, there are strategies to suppress or undermine opposition. This includes using direct violence against oppositionists or their associates, of course, but it also involves counter-mobilizing one’s own supporters, infiltrating the movement, expanding surveillance, using pseudo-legitimate laws and practices that criminalize or increase penalties for erstwhile legal behaviors, adding administrative, financial, or legal burdens to civil-society groups, and planting plainclothes police and agents provocateurs to push the opposition into chaotic and/or undisciplined behavior.

Third, autocrats use strategies to reinforce support among the silent majority and other observers. This includes scapegoating foreigners and outsiders for domestic problems; mischaracterizing oppositionists as terrorists, traitors, coup plotters, “thugs,” or communists; censoring information or engaging in misinformation campaigns; and co-opting or bullying the independent media into submission. As authoritarians consolidate power, all of these behaviors tend to increase in frequency and intensity.

As the hysteria subsides (cf. also today’s articles by Kimberley Strassel at the WSJ and Richard Pollock at the Daily Caller), the crux again remains not the messengers, but the message:

Did or did not federal intelligence agencies improperly pick up and record communications of American citizens — particularly those on the Trump election, transition, and presidential teams — while supposedly monitoring foreign officials, and then selectively leak such data to journalists on the presumption that their ensuing publications would achieve a desired narrative and political result? If so that is unethical and illegal and might be the real collusion/tampering worry. And it is a scary thing.

Read more at: http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/446320/devin-nunes-intelligence-committee-chairmans-leak-investigation

and there's the real issue. we can be sure that this is what will be ignored in house or senate investigations. 0linsky regime operatives and MSM hacks are at risk... and they must be protected.

Proves surveillance:

Obama administration officials were so concerned about what would happen to key classified documents related to the Russia probe once President Trump took office that they created a list of document serial numbers to give to senior members of the Senate Intelligence Committee, a former Obama official told NBC News.

The official said that after the list of documents related to the probe into Russian interference in the U.S. election was created in early January, he hand-carried it to the committee members. The numbers themselves were not classified, said the official.

The purpose, said the official, was to make it "harder to bury" the information, "to share it with those on the Hill who could lawfully see the documents," and to make sure it could reside in an Intelligence committee safe, "not just at Langley [CIA hq]."

That the damage could be limited.

“Instead, they are seeing a downward spiral of incompetence and public contempt — a collapse that is yet to reach a floor. A presidency is failing. A party unable to govern is becoming unfit to govern. And what, in the short term, can be done about it? Nothing. Nothing at all.”

Trump Teeters on the Brink

First Read: “Just 10 weeks on the job, President Trump’s approval rating is stuck in the 30s and 40s. His health-care effort failed. The travel ban is tied up in courts. Congress and the FBI are investigating his campaign’s possible links to Russia. He’s calling out fellow Republicans for failing to help him on health care. His White House tried to cover up (for a while at least) his aides providing information to House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes. And now his ousted national security adviser says he’ll cooperate with the FBI and Congress in exchange for immunity.

“Any one of these stories would ensnare a presidency in a crisis. But you add up these seven storylines above — we’re sure we’re leaving others out — and it’s unsustainable. Conservative commentators are already hitting the panic button… This is a presidency on the brink of a free-fall, and it has to start repairing the damage on all of these fronts — popularity, the agenda, congressional relations, Russia, Flynn.”

I think Donald Trump is still President. Neil Gorsuch will become the next USSC Justice. Democrats are still having to defend several red state Senate seats in 2018. The Democrats are still trying to find anyone (not named Clinton) to commit to run in 2020.

On the smaller scale:

EPA regulations undone. States can now defund PP. The pipeline projects are back on line. Federal hiring is frozen. Two regulations cut for every new regulation. Sanctuary cities defunding. Killing of the TPPT deal. Increase in border security and deportations.

_______

The rest is just silly media posturing that matters very little right now. So the GOP didn't repeal and replace Obamacare in the first 60 days? So a couple of crazy Justices think that travel bans are unconstitutional (but will almost assuredly be overturned by the USSC). So what?

It IS a strong indication that those aids are hiding crimes. It's a pretty good bet that Flynn is hiding something also, that he thinks could lead to criminal prosecution.

Or he's worrying about being caught up in a process crime when there was no underlying crime and the investigators knew it at the time.

Like that's never happened before.

WASHINGTON, April 1 (Reuters) - Michael Flynn, President Donald Trump's former national security adviser, failed to disclose payments from a Russian television network and a second firm linked to Russia in a February financial disclosure form, according to documents released by the White House on Saturday.

In a financial disclosure form signed by Flynn on March 31, the former White House official listed speaking engagements to Russian entities, including the Kremlin-funded RT TV and Volga-Dnepr Airlines.

The form does not say how much Flynn was paid but the speeches are in a section titled "sources of compensation exceeding $5,000 in a year."

The speeches were not included in a form that Flynn signed electronically on February 11, which the White House also released on Saturday.
