Missed the Mark - June runoff

So close, so close and yet so far!
  • Approximately 51% Republican and 49% Democrat!
  • Almost identical to the margin of the Trump victory.
  • Can the left continue to muster the same enthusiasm?

I do have another prediction. Like the Kansas special election, this story will die by Friday.

Once again, US voters decide that we only need 42% turnout to represent our interests. Doesn't get much better than that does it that 38% can sit on the sidelines and then complain. BTW, I heard it called a record turnout. Record of what, incompetence?????? Until we get more people voting, the discord in congress will never end. Sad day for America that so few allow the insanity to continue. Oh well.

This seat will stay gop. Dems poured so much money into this that only two house members have received more funding, paul ryan and a self funded dem. Dems knew that the primary was their best chance. Close but no cigar.

C.H. Truth said...

Don't let the pundits fool you... this was a purple district that had a high quality long term GOP incumbent that made it appear more red than purple.

If the Democrats pour 8.3 million into a race against a fractured GOP field in a district that Clinton only lost by 1% - and end up losing overall by 2% (GOP over Dem)...

How does that "really" bode well for them in the midterms?

wphamilton said...

It doesn't bode anything yet for the midterms, good or ill. But if Osseff wins in June, running mainly on anti-Trump slogans, you may start feeling some concern. In the meantime, should Trump keep screwing up, or even muddling through without accomplishing anything, then you may see a fractured GOP field not just in Price's district but everywhere else.

Osseff shot his load. The GOP will rally around Handel now.

I also wouldn't discount the Trump factor.

Ossoff did far better in early voting than on election night and one of the factors was Trump's last minute tweets and robocalls.

Democrats tried to make about Trump and obliged and the Democrats lost.

I was attributing it to people voting after work, who tend to be more Republican than those voting during working hours. Particularly in the northern suburbs.

The 51% Republican vote tends to favor Handel, but the margin of Osseff's victory shouldn't be discounted either. There is no guarantee that Republicans who didn't vote for Handel yesterday will vote for her in June, while Osseff is already at 48%. I think that Osseff should be slightly favored, especially given that it's likely that Trump will continue his bumbling and will probably freshly offend some local demographics by then.

Trump Still Closely Following Obama Foreign Policy

First Read: “The Trump administration certified that Iran is complying with the nuclear deal… though Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the administration is weighing whether to break the deal. The Trump administration ADMITTING THAT IRAN IS COMPLYING WITH THE NUCLEAR DEAL — despite so much GOP rhetoric to the contrary — is another reminder that, besides its rhetoric and firing off some cruise missiles in Syria, the Team Trump is still pretty much FOLLOWING THE OBAMA PLAYBOOK, at least when it comes to actions.”

Insufferable liberal asshat introduces bill to amend presidential removal procedures

A House Democrat has introduced legislation to enhance the Constitution’s presidential removal procedures in response to concerns about President Trump’s behavior.

Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) filed the bill during the House's two-week April recess to empower former presidents and vice presidents of both parties, in coordination with the sitting vice president, to determine if a president is fit for office.

“It is hard to imagine a better group to work with the vice president to examine whether the president is able to discharge the duties of the office. When there are questions about the president’s ability to fulfill his or her constitutional responsibilities, it is in the country’s best interest to have a mechanism in place that works effectively,” Blumenauer said in a statement.

"In other words, because Iran continues to support terrorism (and always will under the current regime, natch) Trump may decide to reinstate sanctions notwithstanding Iran’s compliance with its nuclear obligations. That would place the United States, not Iran, in violation of the nuclear agreement, and the European parties to the agreement will point to that when they inevitably decline to reinstate sanctions on Iran themselves. (Why punish Shiite terrorists for America’s breach of contract?)

Thank Obama for putting the U.S. in a predicament where we’re the bad actor if we decide to cut off money to a terror state that’s engaged in sectarian cleansing in Syria and remains on track to become a nuclear power — legally — by the end of the next decade."

Ossoff ran against the Governor more than he ran against Trump.

I think the key here is that Ossoff literally garnered a record haul of $8.3 million, and barely got more than Clinton did in this district.

W.P. may be right that there is a chance that some of the voters that went for other Republicans may be less inclined to come out. But the same could be said about the four other Democrats in the race. I think the 48% might create a situation where the GOP decides to take this race seriously from here on out... rather than jump in at the very end like they did.

But W.P. is still running on his "own" assumptions that Republicans see Trump as "Screwing up" when we just discussed the poll that shows that only around 7% of Republicans and only 4% of conservative Republicans think he is doing worse than expected. This is clearly a blind spot for many people, who (like during the election) cannot imagine why anyone would support Trump. Problem is that they did, and they still do.

opie said...

Funny CH, how polls that mirror your opinion or punditry are now being used by you and those that show anything negative are ignored. Keep up the hypocritical behavior, it is what R's do best. BTW, now you equate $'s with votes but ignore the fact that 38% didn't show up to vote...Just saying that those people are the root cause of the discord in this country. Like trump winning the election with 3 million less votes should be the message which needs to be addressed.

Fairly sure Republicans will vote for her over Osseff any day of the week. Plus a whole bunch of GOP voters will show up for the run off who didn't show up yesterday.

Meanwhile Osseff has already reached the high water mark of his Democrat support.

It's hard to see where he could (legally) find any addition votes among his base.

Is it possible to set a lower bar for expectations? Talking and bluster, even lobbing a few symbolic missiles, will only take you so far even with sympathetic Republicans. At some point Trump will need tangible successes, or else even his "burn it all down" constituency will lose patience.

wphamilton said...

Fairly sure Republicans will vote for her over Osseff any day of the week.

You can't count on them even showing up. Sometimes people who strongly support a candidate who loses in the first round (or primary) don't bother to vote for the winning candidate. That will barely affect Osseff but the impact on Handley is unkown.

In the cases where a candidate wins a big plurality but not over 50%, and the other party had more total votes (like in this case) the ultimate outcome has gone either way, roughly equally. In truth you can't reasonably predict it based only on the first round votes. I think that the difference, whichever way it goes, will come down to the public perception of Trump in June.

Myballs said...

Not just the perception of Trump. If the media continue their trump bashing, liberal agenda, which was a factor in Trump's election, gop voters could well turn out against ossoff being blatently pushed by the media.

Ase to the man topic, I think it's foolish to predict this far out. I think this will be a referendum on the President. He has a core of about 40% or likely voters.. Most of those on the right here, would vote for someone Trump supports even if the person was a child molester. That would be "Fake News" and dismissed by using comments like "the 57" as sufficient to keep him in good stranding no matter what.

I doubt that most of you are seeing how many Republicans are struggling to find ways to support Mr Trump. His erratic behavior and tweets do bother the more thoughtful Republicans, and they see the town halls are doing. Whether or not that this enthusiasm will provide enough votes, will vary on the part of the country, but.. big. but, if the enthusiasm will bring about sufficient numbers, the June run off, may be a sign that the President will be hurting rather than helping the local candidates. If the Democrats can get even just 5% or less to change tribes, and vote for Ossoff, he may pull it off.

I know he is young, only 30, but I saw a lot of him over the last few days. At first, he seemed like a rookie. But he made a lot of appearances and went beyond the canned party line. I know you guys didn't lie his start of a wave comment, but he might just have it. But like I said, a bit early. But I saw a hint of "it" but that's me.

The fact that the most popular politician, particularly among Democrats, is Bernie Sanders, who’ll be 78 in 2020, gives you an idea of the extent of the devastation Obama has left behind in the Democratic party.

In his eight years he did okay in ‘08 and ’12, but they have lost, as you enumerated before, the House, the Senate, the presidency, two-thirds of the governorships, two-thirds of the statehouses. He has torched their entire minor-league system. AAA, AA, single-A — there’s nothing left, and that’s why the leadership is in their 70s.

It’s the old progressive, Bernie Sanders, vacationing-in-the-Soviet-Union hard Left, which energizes a lot of students. I don’t think it’s going to carry the party anywhere. Ask yourself, what do they stand for? Higher minimum wage? Fine, but that’s not a program. I think what they have lost is kind of an ideological center. Remember, the real problem in the Clinton campaign was: What was her message? What does she believe? She had to farm it out to 20 people, and nobody had an answer. I don’t know what the party stands for other than it’s right now anti-Trump and it will thrive on that, but beyond that, there’s nothing on the positive side other than the hard Left, and that’s got no appeal beyond these university towns and some cities.

As for Roger Krugman's prediction of a collapse in the US Stock Markets and in the US Economy, well, again, he is far off the mark.

"Index of leading economic indicators which came in at a March gain of 0.4 percent to beat Econoday's high forecast. Gains were broad-based in the month led by the ISM new orders index and including, as always, the interest rate spread where short-term rates are unusually low. The LEI has been very solid and continues to point ahead to rising economic strength. " Econoday website

Yep, note during the Lost Years reports came in with the heading "unexpectedly" as a way to excuse the latest failure of Obamanomics.

Note now we get "Beat" what was expected .
