Senate Tax bill to include Individual mandate repeal

So this (according to the CBO) will reduce spending by approximately $340 billion, thus allowing the GOP to use that $340 to create tax "cuts" rather than just tax adjustments (that end up just slicing the same size pie differently).

Of course, there is almost no way that $340 billion will be saved by the repeal, but it does allow for the tax cuts that Republicans want. Ultimately they believe that the tax cuts will "pay for themselves" but the CBO doesn't provide for any such thinking.

Now the Democrats are between a rock and a hard place. On one hand, to demand that millions will lose insurance, then they admit that the $340 billion is a legitimate number. If they want to argue that the tax plan is not deficit neutral, then they have to declare that the CBO estimates are bogus.

Either way, they lose...

Btw... of the Obamacare "features" the only one that is by and large unpopular is the individual mandate. Upwards of 66% of the public and over 80% of Republicans are not fans of the individual mandate and wouldn't mind seeing it repealed.

Secondly, when the CBO (or Democrats) declare that the repeal of the individual mandate will make 13 million "lose" their insurance, it will be proof positive for most Americans that the CBO and the Democrats are substituting the reality of the  "choice" to not purchase insurance with the political rhetoric of people "losing" their insurance.

As a vocal opponent of the individual mandate from the beginning, I can't be opposed to its repeal.

Presumably, the 340 billion in savings is from people getting subsidies for insurance they don't want, and ideologically speaking they shouldn't have to buy it, and the rest of us shouldn't have to subsidize them for what they don't want in the first place. The question arises however, are the rest of us (working class) going to pay it anyway in higher premiums, while savings are plowed into tax reductions for the wealthy? With this tied into a tax package, the only way that we (working class taxpayers) don't lose ground is if the entire $340 billion, or the vast majority of it, is applied to tax breaks in proportion to the numbers of people paying higher premiums rather that in proportion to a person's tax burden.

Senate GOP to add repeal of Obamacare insurance mandate into tax bill

The Wall Street Journal for some reason, does not agree with our esteemed host.

Republican plans to end the Affordable Care Act’s rule that most people must have health insurance would allow consumers who don’t want coverage to shed it, but it could drive premiums higher for those who keep it.

Eliminating the so-called individual mandate would increase the number of people without insurance by four million, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, a number that it says would rise to 13 million by 2027.

But those who buy private insurance, rather than getting it at work or through a government program, would see their premiums rise by about 10% in most years of the coming decade, the CBO has forecast.

Republican plans to end the Affordable Care Act’s rule that most people must have health insurance would allow consumers who don’t want coverage to shed it, but it could drive premiums higher for those who keep it.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/senate-republican-plan-to-repeal-mandate-risks-higher-premiums-1510705649?tesla=y

Of course, excluding the CBO which by the way is not partisan as is CH, and just plain logic says that if you reduce the number of people in the insurance plan, the remaining patients have to pay more out of pocket.

what are you expecting?

This has to go through reconciliation, meaning (by definition) it has to be deficit neutral. So you need somewhere to "save" spending in order to actually "cut" taxes. Otherwise, you are simply robbing from Peter to pay Paul.

The only other way to pass tax cuts is to garner the support of 60 Senators?

Then in what may be the final blow, is the fact that Jr was in contact with WikiLeaks during the campaign. Yhe "coincidental" comments by the candidate in many remarks, within very short times after his email with WikiLeaks were part of campaign remarks.

You don't need the CBO to tell you how insurance works. It's not revenue neutral and the price of insurance will go up quite a bit. If in some way, they pass it, they will lose control across the board.

Many observers have been accusing China’s leaders of deliberately snubbing Barack Obama during his arrival in the country on Saturday afternoon after the U.S. president was not given the standard red-carpet staircase used to leave Air Force One. Chinese official involved in the diplomatic arrangements for Obama’s arrival for the G20 meeting, however, revealed that this was not the case.

For other notable attendees of the high-profile meeting of powerful heads of state, Chinese authorities provided the red-carpet treatment for Russian president Vladimir Putin, South Korean president Park Geun-hye, India’s prime minister Narendra Modi, British prime minister Theresa May and Brazilian president Michel Temer.

Even the journalists who accompanied President Obama from Hawaii said that Chinese security guards did not allow them to watch and observe how he exited from the plane’s small bare metal stairway, according to the Washington Post.

A verbal altercation was also reported between U.S. and Chinese officials as Obama was making his way through the crowd on the tarmac. One Chinese official was caught on video shouting, “This is our country! This is our airport!” when his White House counterpart reportedly insisted on the U.S. setting the parameters for Obama’s plane exit.

Meanwhile, Putin’s grander red-carpet entrance was compared to Obama’s experience, fueling speculation that China purposefully snubbed the American President’s entrance.

According to a Chinese foreign ministry official, however, the decision to do away with the usual rolling red-carpet staircase was Washington’s decision, South China Morning Post reported.

“China provides a rolling staircase for every arriving state leader, but the U.S. delegation complained that the driver couldn’t speak English and couldn’t understand security instructions from the United States; so China proposed that we could assign a translator to sit beside the driver, but the U.S. side turned down the proposal and insisted that they didn’t need the staircase provided by the airport,” the official told SCMP.

“I wouldn’t overcrank the significance,” Obama later expressed that the incident should not be overblown, according to Reuters. “Part of it is we also have a much bigger footprint than a lot of other countries. We’ve got a lot of planes, a lot of helicopters, a lot of cars, a lot of guys. You know, if you’re a host country, sometimes it may feel a little bit much.”

Yet Mr Trump’s rise seems to have coincided with a turnaround in fortunes for the middle-class. In 2015 median household income, adjusted for inflation, rose 5.2%; in 2016 it was up another 3.2%. During those two years, poorer households gained more, on average, than richer ones. The latest development—one that will be of particular interest to Mr Trump—is that blue-collar wages have begun to rocket. In the year to the third quarter, wage and salary growth for the likes of factory workers, builders and drivers easily outstripped that for professionals and managers. In some cases, blue-collar pay growth now tops 4% (see chart).

Rep. Mark Meadows: A special counsel must investigate the Russia dossier, explain why Obama's FBI was involved

For the past year, as our government has been mired in both an aimless and fruitless investigation into accusations of collusion between the Russian government and the 2016 Trump Presidential campaign, Democrats have insisted that Congress follow where the evidence leads in this investigation.

My Democratic colleagues are absolutely right. Congress should follow where the facts lead. However, they’re leading in a very different direction than the mainstream media narrative might suggest.

With regard to the original purpose of the investigation, Congress has held multiple hearings and interviewed dozens of witnesses looking into allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. There is nothing there. It's time to move on.

But in the process of chasing a non-existent scandal, we’ve learned of a concerning fact pattern surrounding the Clinton campaign, and potentially the Obama administration’s, involvement in a 2016 targeted campaign, using salacious information from foreign intelligence officials, against then-GOP nominee Donald Trump. The information we’ve learned warrants the appointment of a special counsel to investigate how the Russian Dossier was created and why President Obama’s FBI was involved.

As we know from a recent New York Times report, Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee paid for research that was included in the now infamous Russian dossier, made public in January of this year by Buzzfeed and reported on by CNN.

We now know the Clinton campaign and the DNC paid ex-British intelligence officer Christopher Steele to compile the dossier with research provided by Russian intelligence officials. Much of the dossier contained claims that have either not been verified or have been directly refuted.

The fact that the Clinton campaign and the DNC paid intelligence officials in Russia for salacious and false information on President Trump is suspicious enough. But we’re also beginning to see evidence that raises questions about whether the Obama Justice Department may have inappropriately involved themselves in this project both before and after the 2016 Presidential campaign.

Defying gloomy predictions, Obamacare enrollment surges
A barrage of Obamacare media coverage may have provided a marketing boost for a health law the president has pronounced 'dead.'
By PAUL DEMKO 11/15/2017 11:50 AM EST Updated 11/15/2017 11:15 AM EST
Doomsday headlines about Obamacare enrollment may be having an unforeseen consequence: booming sign-ups in the troubled insurance marketplaces.

Obamacare’s fifth open enrollment season, the first under President Donald Trump, is off to a surprisingly robust start despite the brutal developments of the past year — skyrocketing premiums, dwindling competition, unremitting Republican efforts to eradicate it.

Story Continued Below

Sign-ups surged as soon as enrollment opened Nov. 1, easily surpassing the number of Americans getting coverage during the opening days of the final two sign-up periods under the Obama administration. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services reported Wednesday that nearly 1.5 million people had selected plans through last Saturday.

In other words, there might be no such thing as bad news for Obamacare.

“As P.T. Barnum would say, as long as my name is in the papers and it’s spelled correctly, it’s all good,” said Michael Marchand, chief marketing officer for Washington state’s Obamacare marketplace, which saw its website traffic increase by 24 percent during the first week of enrollment. “I think there’s some truth to that.”

The conventional wisdom was that enrollment would dip significantly as a hostile administration gutted outreach and marketing. Analysts at Standard & Poor’s projected that anywhere from 800,000 to 1.6 million fewer Americans would sign up for 2018 coverage.

Instead, 876,788 individuals enrolled through HealthCare.gov during the second week of sign-ups alone — and that doesn’t count the states running their own markets and doing more ambitious outreach.

Breaking news.

Two more women came out with accusations against Moore.

Nobody is stopping people from buying on the Obamacare exchange if they want to.

The just will no longer have to.

Next step is the repeal all the government mandates on insurance plans so companies can tailor plans toward younger, poorer, and healthier people.

A Gadsden woman says Roy Moore groped her while she was in his law office on legal business with her mother in 1991. Moore was married at that time.

In the past week, Moore has been accused by five other women of a range of behaviors that include sexual misconduct with a woman when she was 14, and sexual assault of another when she was 16. This is the first public accusation of physical contact that happened after Moore was married.

In recent days, Moore has publicly denied any wrongdoing, and has denied knowing some of the women.

Tina Johnson

In interviews with AL.com, Tina Johnson recalls that in the fall of 1991 she sat in the law office of then-attorney Roy Moore on Third Street in Gadsden. Her mother, Mary Katherine Cofield, sat in the chair next to her. Moore sat behind his desk, across from them. Johnson remembers she was wearing a black and white dress.

Almost from the moment she walked in to Moore's office, Johnson said, Moore began flirting with her.

"He kept commenting on my looks, telling me how pretty I was, how nice I looked," recalled Johnson. "He was saying that my eyes were beautiful."

It made her uncomfortable. "I was thinking, can we hurry up and get out of here?"

Johnson was 28 years old, in a difficult marriage headed toward divorce, and unemployed. She was at the office to sign over custody of her 12-year-old son to her mother, with whom he'd been living. Her mother had hired Moore to handle the custody petition.

Johnson had two young daughters at the time with her then-husband, and her son said he wanted to live with his grandmother.

At one point during the meeting, she said, Moore came around the desk and sat on the front of it, just inches from her. He was so close, she said, she could smell his breath.

According to Johnson, he asked questions about her young daughters, including what color eyes they had and if they were as pretty as she was. She said that made her feel uncomfortable, too.

Once the papers were signed, she and her mother got up to leave. After her mother walked through the door first, she said, Moore came up behind her.

It was at that point, she recalled, he grabbed her buttocks.

"He didn't pinch it; he grabbed it," said Johnson. She was so surprised she didn't say anything. She didn't tell her mother.

She said she told her sister years later how Moore had made her feel uncomfortable during that meeting. Her sister told AL.com she remembers the conversation.

Johnson reached out to AL.com earlier this week to talk about her experience with Moore.

AL.com located the court documents from 1991, detailing the custody transfer. Cofield's petition for custody is signed by Roy S. Moore, attorney. It lists his address as 924 Third Avenue, Gadsden.

Johnson has had ups and downs in her life, both before and after she met Moore. She has pled guilty to writing bad checks, and for third-degree theft of property, which she said stemmed from family disagreement over the care of her late stepfather.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Since marrying her husband, Morris Johnson, in 2010, she said she has been working to improve her life.

"I'm not perfect," she said. "I have things in my background and I know (the public) will jump on anything, but (what happened with Moore) is still the truth, and the truth will stand when the world won't."

Johnson, who is now disabled, considers herself a devout Christian and regularly attends a church near her home in Gadsden. She said she is not political and doesn't follow politics. She said she has not spoken with Moore since that day in his office, and does not know any of the five other women who have come forward with accusations against him.

"This is not a politics thing with me," she said. "It's more of a moral and religious thing." It has bothered her over the years to see Moore on TV, talking about his Christian faith.

She wanted to come forward publicly now, she said, because it's hard for victims of harassment to talk openly about their experiences.

"I want people to know that it's OK to finally say something," she said. "I guess I'm ashamed I didn't say nothing, didn't turn around and slap him."

A spokesperson for the Roy Moore campaign contacted in advance had not given AL.com a response by publication time.

'All the time'

In 1982, Kelly Harrison Thorp was working as a hostess at the Red Lobster restaurant in Gadsden. She was 17 years old and a high school senior.

One day Roy Moore came into the restaurant, and she recognized him.

"He was a public figure in this small town," she said of Moore, who at the time was in his early 30s and the deputy district attorney for Etowah County. Later that year he would mount an unsuccessful campaign for circuit court judge.

Thorp said Moore asked her if she'd go out with him sometime.

"I just kind of said, 'Do you know how old I am?'" she recalled.

"And he said, 'Yeah. I go out with girls your age all the time.'"

Thorp said she turned him down and told him she had a boyfriend. She said he then walked away.

Thorp said she later told a family member but did not tell the story publicly. She moved away from Gadsden the following year, and has just recently moved back.

Thorp knows one of Moore's accusers, Leigh Corfman, who told The Washington Post that Moore had a sexual encounter with her when she was 14. Thorp believes Corfman's story and said she is proud of her for telling it publicly.

In an interview on Sean Hannity's radio show last Friday, Moore said he did not "generally" date girls in their late teens when he was in his early 30s.

"If I did, you know, I'm not going to dispute anything," he said, "but I don't remember anything like that."

Why now

As more GOP leaders - including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell - are calling for Moore to step aside, he has given no indication he plans to do so. He still has a lead in most polls.

One question often levied at the accusers is why they didn't come forward publicly before now, a month away from the special election for Alabama senator. Moore has been a public and often controversial figure in Alabama politics for decades.

It's an issue both Johnson and Thorp wanted to address.

Thorp said local women have not spoken publicly against Moore before now because he had power in town and in the state, and they didn't think they would be believed.

"Everybody knew it wouldn't matter," she said, "that he would get elected anyway because his supporters are never going to believe anything bad about him."

Johnson said the answer was even more simple.

"It's because somebody asked," she said. "If anybody had asked, we would have told it. No one asked."

Trump's top economic adviser can't contain his surprise after CEOs say his tax plan won't make them invest more
The Independent Clark Mindock,The Independent 3 hours ago

Mr Cohn is pictured here at the Economic Club of Washington: AFP/Getty Images
White House economy adviser Gary Cohn appeared perplexed this week when a room full of CEOs said that the Trump administration’s tax plan wouldn’t inspire them to increase capital investments, but experts say that their reluctance to say they would should come at no surprise at all.

During an event for the Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council, an editor at that newspaper turned to ask the room a question: “If the tax reform bill goes through, do you plan to increase investment — your company’s investment, capital investment?” Prompted to raise their hands if so, very few shot their palms into the air. Mr Cohn, the White House Economic Council director, smiled uncomfortably at the response.

“Why aren’t the other hands up?” he asked, making a joke out of the spectacle.

But experts say that it isn’t hard to figure out why corporations might not want to take savings from cuts to the corporate tax cut and pump it back into their companies — all you have to do is look at who actually benefits financially from the cuts.

Citing a recent Moody’s report that estimate that the Trump tax plan would yield just a 0.3 percent economic growth rate for 10 years before a likely decline, Brooking Institute senior fellow William Gale noted that business leaders might be expecting declines in the long term.

GOP Mulls Drastic Plan to Save Senate Seat
10:53 pm EST
Politico: “With less than four weeks until the special election and no sign that the party’s besieged nominee will exit the race, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his top advisers are discussing the legal feasibility of asking appointed Sen. Luther Strange to resign from his seat in order to trigger a new special election.

”McConnell aides express caution, saying they’re uncertain whether such a move, one of several options being discussed, is even possible. Yet the talks underscore the despair among top Republicans over relinquishing a seat in deep-red Alabama, further diminishing their slim Senate majority.”

The latest GOP ploy likely violates the 17th Amendment

_____________
Trump Stays Silent on Roy Moore
10:47 pm EST
“Senate Republicans turned to President Trump on Wednesday in hopes he would join their urgent attempt to force GOP nominee Roy Moore out of the Senate race in Alabama following allegations of sexual misconduct — but Trump did not oblige,” the Washington Post reports.

“Instead, back in Washington after a 12-day Asia trip, Trump was silent on Moore, who has been accused by two women of initiating unwanted sexual encounters when Moore was in his 30s and they were 14 and 16. Moore has denied the allegations.”

”In Alabama, Moore showed no signs he was preparing to bow out.”
______________
Two More Women Say Moore Made Unwanted Overtures
8:53 pm EST
Two additional women told the Washington Post of unwanted sexual advances made by Alabama U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore (R) when they were teenagers and he was in his thirties.

In all, The Post spoke to a dozen people who worked at the mall or hung out there as teenagers during the late ’70s and early ’80s and recall Moore as a frequent presence — a well-dressed man walking around alone, leaning on counters, spending enough time in the stores, especially on weekend nights, that some of the young women who worked there said they became uncomfortable.”

Tax Bill Faces Uncertainty in the Senate
7:25 pm EST
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) may not be the only GOP senator to pull support from his party’s tax bill, the New York Times reports.

“Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Bob Corker of Tennessee and John McCain of Arizona have voiced their own concerns and refused to say whether they would ultimately vote for the tax bill.

“With the House expected to pass its tax legislation, the fate of the overhaul fell into the hands of Republican senators, who grappled with the dangerous political prospects of passing a bill that critics said could undermine the health care system and favored companies over the middle class.”

GOP Strategists Say House Incumbents Aren’t Ready
7:21 pm EST
“Republican strategists are warning that some of the party’s veteran House incumbents aren’t adequately preparing for the 2018 election, putting the GOP majority at risk by their failure to recognize the dangerous conditions facing them,” Politico reports.

“Nearly three dozen Republicans were outraised by their Democratic challengers in the most recent fundraising quarter. Others, the strategists say, are failing to maintain high profiles in their districts or modernize their campaigns by using data analytics in what is shaping up as a stormy election cycle.”

Bannon Sticks with Roy Moore
7:20 pm EST
Jonathan Swan: “There is ‘zero chance’ Steve Bannon will back down from his support of Roy Moore, according to one source close to Bannon. A second source says Bannon believes Moore’s denials which is why he’s sticking with him.

“Bannon has been out of the country and silent on the Moore situation as it spun out of control and other Republicans called for him to drop out of the race. Bannon’s response, to triple-down on his support, will intensify his war with Republicans. As the source close to Bannon put it, Mitch McConnell should quit the Senate before Moore.”

Artificial climate intervention could completely destroy the planet, so we probably shouldn’t do that

The scientists simulated what would happen if the aerosol injection technique was used in the northern hemisphere, which has been casually proposed as a potential method of reducing the severity of tropical storms. The climate models reveal that the large-scale action would indeed calm things down a bit and potentially reduce the number of North Atlantic cyclones, but it would also have dire effects on other parts of the Earth.

The drop off of tropical storms in one area would actually lead to a spike in drought in parts of Africa, according to the data. If you have even a casual interesting in weather or nature in general, that won’t be much of a surprise, as nature has taught us that messing with one thing inevitably leads to unexpected changes elsewhere. Thusly, the researchers are now calling for strict regulation on geoengineering as a “solution” to climate change. That seems like a good idea.

Republican women who voted for President Trump in North Carolina said during a focus group Wednesday night that they are embarrassed by and exasperated with him,” James Hohmann reports.

“The focus group really underscored the extent to which the deep unease that propelled Trump’s victory a year ago has only gotten worse. Asked for one word to describe the state of America today, the answers were chaotic, tornado, backward, troubled, disrupted, fearful, anxious and embarrassing.”

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-11-14/fed-issues-subprime-warning-household-debt-hits-new-all-time-high

. it would probably not come as a surprise that according to the just released latest quarterly household debt and credit report by the NY Fed, Americans' debt rose to a new record high in the second quarter on the back of an increase in every form of debt: from mortgage, to auto, student and credit card debt. Aggregate household debt increased for the 13th consecutive quarter, rising by $116 billion (0.9%) to a new all time high. As of September 30, 2017, total household indebtedness was $12.96 trillion, an increase of $605 billion from a year ago and equivalent to 66% of US GDP, versus a high of around 87% in early 2009. After years of deleveraging in the wake of the 2007-09 recession, household debt has risen more than 16.2% since the trough hit in the spring of 2013.

In a troubling development, and following on the warning issued last quarter, the New Your Fed explicitly warned that credit card and auto loan "flows into delinquency" increased. Specifically, credit card flows into delinquency have increased over the past year, while auto loan flows into delinquency have been steadily increasing for several years.

Putting these numbers in context, while the impact from these growing delinquencies on the larger financial sector may be muted, the Fed cautions that there are over 23 million consumers who hold subprime auto loans. These consumers may find their credit reports further damaged after a default or encounter further financial difficulties after experiencing a car repossession.

At this point it is worth recalling the explicit warning the NY Fed made three months ago on deteriorating trends in an other key debt product: credit cards.

“While relatively low, credit card delinquency flows climbed notably over the past year,” said Andrew Haughwout, senior vice president at the New York Fed. “This is occurring within the context of loosening lending standards, as borrowers with lower credit scores recover their ability to access credit cards. The current state of credit card delinquency flows can be an early indicator of future trends and we will closely monitor the degree to which this uptick is predictive of further consumer distress.”

The Trump administration announced it will allow the trophies of legally hunted elephants from Zimbabwe and Zambia to be imported to the U.S., reversing an Obama-era ban.

The new regulation allows officials in Zimbabwe and Zambia to issue permits to import elephant heads if there is evidence that hunting benefits the animal’s conservation, ABC reported.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service issued a statement acknowledging the money that goes towards the trophy permits could in fact help the animals by "putting much-needed revenue back into conservation."
