Those hoping the Doctor would save them from Trump...

... are going to be extremely disappointed.

Dr Ronny Jackson (an Obama appointee) is giving a press conference before a hostile media, where he has stated that in his professional opinion that Trump is in excellent physical shape for someone of his age. He spoke highly about his energy level, and endurance. Dr Jackson even called the President mentally "sharp". He also suggested that Trump must have been blessed with tremendous physical genes, while also suggesting that his no cigarettes and no alcohol lifestyle contributes to his overall health.

He said this opinion comes from "objective data".

"Very, Very good physical health. Excellent cognitive health."

Obviously, the Doctor has been and is being asked a ton of questions, almost all of them an attempt to get the good doctor to say something bad about Trump. So far, he has defended the President's physical and mental health in almost a cheerleading fashion. It's clear he is not one who sees the President as having any physical or mental problems.

The President did take a cognitive test (which Trump requested). The doctor stated that he scored high enough on the cognitive exam (30 out of 30) that it basically "rules out" any additional need for psychiatric testing. In other words, he is not only sane, but objectively considered cognitively superior.

From a factual basis, the exam takes place over about a four hour period, and Dr Jackson has twelve different consulting medical experts that are on hand.

Trump tweeted his black approval rating has doubled. It hasn't.
By Ryan Struyk, CNN 2 hrs ago

President Donald Trump bragged on Twitter that his approval rating with black Americans has doubled. It hasn't.

Only 15% of black Americans said they approved of Trump's job performance in the days following his inauguration last January — and it's only gone downhill from there. In the most recent Gallup weekly numbers, only 6% of black Americans said they approved of the President's job performance.

The most recent CNN polling, from December, shows that only 3% of black Americans said they approved of how Trump is handling his job nearly a year into his White House tenure. A whopping 91% said they disapproved.

But that didn't stop Trump from tweeting on Tuesday morning that his approval among black Americans had doubled.

"Among black men, Trump’s “2017 average approval rating significantly exceeds his 2016 vote share,” admitted a January 11 article in the Atlantic by author Ronald Brownstein. “23 percent of black men approved of Trump’s performance versus 11 percent of black women,” said the article.

That score averages out to 17 percent, or twice the 8 percent score he was given in the 2016 exit polls."

And there, without realizing it, you've zeroed in on the weak link in this story.

This medical examination was not a cheerleading assignment, except maybe in Trump's mind.

This doctor who cites "objective data" doesn't sound very objective at all right now. It's open to question whether he was ever objective to begin with.

In fact, the whole story of the cognitive test plays exactly like one of those lies Trump is well known for concocting in order to make himself look exceptional and self-assured.

"I went out of my way to take a test I said I wouldn't take in order to dispel a notion I've said isn't worth my time, because I was sure I would do well on a test I've never taken and I felt like going above and beyond to put the public at ease."

We're supposed to believe this was the thought process of the same guy who's still hiding his income tax returns.

Err, no.

The only way this could smell more like bullshit would be if Jackson said he had determined Trump to be a stable genius.

Second opinion, please.

Meanwhile, all the rest of us have to do is watch some selections from the past 25 years of Trump interviews in chronological order to see that his cognitive abilities have degenerated dramatically in that time.

President Trump is mentally and physically healthy; the White House press corps is not (and obviously some on the left here also are not)

..."After an hour of this, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders took over. Again, the press questioned her about "that word." She patiently explained that they've been talking about this for five days, and surprise! the president is not politically correct. Oh.

Hmmm – would the press ever question, oh, say, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) or Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) about her physical or mental health?

Or their fellow reporters?

Just asking. Wouldn't it be interesting to learn the results?"

C.H. Truth said...

They don't test his judgment or qualifications for the job.

Nope. The doctor only determines whether the President is physically and mentally fit to perform the job. In this doctor's opinion, the President enjoys excellent physical health and superior mental health.

Whether someone has the good judgement and qualifications to be President is just an opinion. One that is left to the voters.

Everyday politicians make decisions that lead to people questioning their judgement. (Look at the WashPost going after Dick Durbin) What "qualifies" someone to be a public official differs from person to person.

But hey Rog...

What does it tell you when you want to reject the medical opinion of the doctor that has literally spent the past year observing and attending to the President... a doctor who has a staff of 12 and just completed a comprehensive 4 hour physical examination?

What does it tell you when you would prefer to listen to tabloid psychologists (who make up approximately 0.08% of the field) who openly thumb their noses at the ethical standards of their profession to offer a fairy tale diagnosis without actually even knowing or examining the person in question.

I know what it tells me. You will simply listen to whoever tells you exactly what you want to hear.

The number of people seeking to join the foreign service has also decreased, with applications dropping by half, according to the news outlet, which cited recent data from the American Foreign Service Association.

Last week's resignation of the U.S. ambassador to Panama also resulted in people serving at the State Department raising questions about their own work there, it added.

John Feeley resigned from his post, saying he can no longer serve under Trump.

“Given what happened in the last few days, people are wondering how are they going to be effective in an environment like this,” a U.S. official who works regularly with the State Department told McClatchy.

“It’s one thing for us to go in and slam our hands on the table and say this is what we want ... It’s another to denigrate them and make it crystal clear this is what our leadership thinks about them in the vulgarest of terms.”

Feeley submitted his resignation letter before reports that Trump during a meeting with lawmakers at the White House referred to Haiti and African nations as "shithole countries," according to McClatchy.

Some other officials in the State Department reportedly have since questioned whether they are serving productively in their roles.

Still, one State Department official told McClatchy that there is a "sense of duty to carry out what we've been trained."

Report: FOX News 'killed' story on Trump's alleged relationship with porn star

Did Fox News hold back on publishing a story about President Trump and a porn star?

CNN reports President Trump’s favorite cable channel avoided publishing a story the network had on an alleged sexual relationship between Trump and porn star Stephanie Clifford.

CNN claimed Fox News reporter, Diana Falzone, wrote a story a month before the election detailing the alleged relationship between Trump and the adult-film actress who goes by the name Stormy Daniels.

Apparently, Falzone had seen emails discussing a $130,000 payment to keep Clifford silent on the encounter, and even had a statement from Clifford’s manager confirming a sexual relationship with Trump.

However, the story never came out.

A source told CNN that “Fox killed it.” Fox News’s digital editor-in-chief and vice president explained to CNN that the network was “unable to verify all of the facts and publish a story.”

Nevertheless, later in January, the Wall Street Journal, which is owned by Fox News titan, Rupert Murdoch, ended up publishing the story detailing how Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, arranged for the payment.

Cohen tells the Journal, Trump “once again vehemently denies” the encounter which would have allegedly taken place one year after he and Melania Trump were married.

"It bears noting that so fraught with malice was the phrase 'enemy of the people,' that even Nikita Khrushchev forbade its use, telling the Soviet Communist Party that the phrase had been introduced by Stalin for the purpose of 'annihilating such individuals' who disagreed with the supreme leader."

Flake also criticized the president's claims that the 2016 election was rigged and riddled by voter fraud, as well as Trump's labeling the investigation into alleged Russian election meddling a "hoax" and "witch hunt."

Somebody's mental health is not diagnosed on hunches and observations from people who have interest and opinions on behavior.

There is a White House attending physician who has an entire staff dedicated to keeping track of the White House health. This is a guy who is not a partisan, not a guy brought in by Trump, and someone who has no incentive to say anything other than the truth.

He objectively stated that Trump was in exceptional physical health all things considered. He called him mentally sharp, suggested that his ability to work through stress is exceptional, and provided a well established cognitive test that Trump basically scored perfect on.

There is literally no objective reason to question this doctor, question the observations of this doctor, question the opinions of this doctor, or question his ultimate diagnosis of the President's health.

There is only one reason to question the doctor. Trump derangement syndrome.

The enemy of the people,” was what the president of the United States called the free press in 2017.

Mr. President, it is a testament to the condition of our democracy that our own president uses words infamously spoken by Josef Stalin to describe his enemies. It bears noting that so fraught with malice was the phrase “enemy of the people," that even Nikita Khrushchev forbad its use, telling the Soviet Communist Party that the phrase had been introduced by Stalin for the purpose of “annihilating such individuals” who disagreed with the supreme leader.
After the casual comparison of Trump to Stalin, he continues:

This alone should be a source of great shame for us in this body, especially for those of us in the president’s party. For they are shameful, repulsive statements. And, of course, the president has it precisely backward – despotism is the enemy of the people. The free press is the despot’s enemy, which makes the free press the guardian of democracy. When a figure in power reflexively calls any press that doesn’t suit him “fake news,” it is that person who should be the figure of suspicion, not the press.

Follow the Money.

Officials investigating the Kremlin’s interference in the 2016 US presidential election are scrutinizing newly uncovered financial transactions between the Russian government and people or businesses inside the United States.

Records exclusively reviewed by BuzzFeed News also show years of Russian financial activity within the US that bankers and federal law enforcement officials deemed suspicious, raising concerns about how the Kremlin’s diplomats operated here long before the 2016 election.

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s team, charged with investigating Russian election interference and possible collusion by the Trump campaign, is examining these transactions and others by Russian diplomatic personnel, according to a US official with knowledge of the inquiry. The special counsel has broad authority to investigate “any matters” that “may arise” from his investigation, and the official said Mueller’s probe is following leads on suspicious Russian financial activity that may range far beyond the election.

The transactions reveal:

One of the people at the center of the investigation, the former Russian ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak, received $120,000 ten days after the election of Donald Trump. Bankers flagged it to the US government as suspicious in part because the transaction, marked payroll, didn’t fit prior pay patterns.

Five days after Trump’s inauguration, someone attempted to withdraw $150,000 cash from the embassy’s account — but the embassy’s bank blocked it. Bank employees reported the attempted transaction to the US government because it was abnormal activity for that account.

From March 8 to April 7, 2014, bankers flagged nearly 30 checks for a total of about $370,000 to embassy employees, who cashed the checks as soon as they received them, making it virtually impossible to trace where the money went. Bank officials noted that the employees had not received similar payments in the past, and that the transactions surrounded the date of a critical referendum on whether parts of Crimea should secede from Ukraine and join Russia — one of Vladimir Putin’s top foreign policy concerns and a flash point with the West.

Over five years, the Russian Cultural Centre — an arm of the government that sponsors classes and performances and is based in Washington, DC — sent $325,000 in checks that banking officials flagged as suspicious. The amounts were not consistent with normal payroll checks and some of the transactions fell below the $10,000 threshold that triggers a notice to the US government.

The Russian Embassy in Washington, DC, sent more than $2.4 million to small home-improvement companies controlled by a Russian immigrant living not far from there. Between 2013 and March 2017, that contractor’s various companies received about 600 such payments, earmarked for construction jobs at Russian diplomatic compounds. Bankers told the Treasury they did not think those transactions were related to the election but red-flagged them because the businesses seemed too small to have carried out major work on the embassy and because the money was cashed quickly or wired to other accounts.

Each of these transactions sparked a “suspicious activity report” sent to the US Treasury’s financial crimes unit by Citibank, which handles accounts of the Russian Embassy. By law, bankers must alert the government to transactions that bear hallmarks of money laundering or other financial misconduct. Such reports can support investigations and intelligence gathering — but by themselves they are not evidence of a crime, and many suspicious activity reports are filed on transactions that are perfectly legal. Intelligence and diplomatic sources who reviewed the transactions for BuzzFeed News said there could be justifiable uses for the money, such as travel, bonuses, or pension payouts.

Fortunately for him, Obama was protected by the new media and the Republicans all and all were much too civil and mature to throw around reckless talk of the 25th amendment and impeachment.

Jeff Flake just said it was a "falsehood" for President Trump to repeatedly call the Russia matter a "hoax."

"To be very clear, to call the Russia matter a 'hoax' – as the president has done so many times – is a falsehood," Flake said.

"We know that the attacks orchestrated by the Russian government during the election were real and constitute a grave threat to both American sovereignty and to our national security. It is in the interest of every American to get to the bottom of this matter, wherever the investigation leads."

He added: "Ignoring or denying the truth about hostile Russian intentions toward the United States leaves us vulnerable to further attacks. We are told by our intelligence agencies that those attacks are ongoing, yet it has recently been reported that there has not been a single cabinet-level meeting regarding Russian interference and how to defend America against these attacks. Not one."

"What might seem like a casual and routine untruth – so casual and routine that it has by now become the white noise of Washington - is in fact a serious lapse in the defense of our country."

Look, he can be 100% mentally stable, but can make terrible decisions

Barrack Obama was mentally stable. Also, much like Trump, Clinton, and a slew of other Presidents... Obama was an obvious narcissist. Anyone wanting the job described as "leader of the free world" better have a pretty high opinion of themselves.

As far as executive decisions go... depending on your political viewpoints, you probably view the Presidents you voted for as universally correct across the board, and those you didn't vote for as universally wrong across the board. Doesn't make every Republican or every Democrat crazy, just because certain Americans don't like their decisions.

But what I can tell you is that in my lifetime, Republican Presidents have almost always had their mental capabilities challenged. Nixon was challenged for being paranoid to the point of poor mental health. Ronald Reagan was accused of first being crazy (like Trump) and then later being accused of not being able to make a decision. Bush 43 was routinely discounted as not being "smart enough" to be President (when in fact, he was most likely in the top 5% of the population as it pertained to intelligence).

Perhaps if the left didn't attempt to claim every Republican was mentally unqualified, they would have some credibility on the subject. But they are the Party that cried wolf, or in this case... "mental instability".

Obama's interest in the Presidency was clearly domestic policy, and specifically domestic policy that pushed the classic liberal points. Environmental protections, creating racial quotas, ordering cities to retrain their police, etc, etc, etc...

Of the two of them, Obama was much more likely to discount those who worked for him.... said he was a better speechwriter than his speechwriter. Stated that he was better policy maker than any of his policy experts. He always believed he was the smartest guy in the room (or in his case the whole world).

There is only one reason to question the doctor. Trump's behaviors.

The doctor has first hand experience with being around Trump and getting an unfiltered account of his behavior.

The doctor seems impressed.

But I guess if you take the fourth hand word about his behavior from the n ext door neighbor of the nephew of the White House janitor... rather than a doctor who is actually around him...

Then someone's mental health should actually be questioned.

So much for CH and his typical lies about obama while fellating trump....How sad he is......

In September 2012, the Washington Post fact-checked general rumors that President Barack Obama skipped security briefings regularly, awarding the claim “Three Pinocchios” (that is to say, “mostly false”) and countering that President Ronald Reagan skipped a full 99 percent of such meetings. As of December 2016, it remains unclear whether Trump is actually skipping an excessive amount of briefings or being briefed in an alternative fashion privately, or whether there is information available that originated with anyone other than unnamed, anonymous sources.

But a recent report published in our free press should raise an alarm. Reading from the story:
“In February…Syrian President Bashar Assad brushed off an Amnesty International report that some 13,000 people had been killed at one of his military prisons by saying, “You can forge anything these days, we are living in a fake news era.”
In the Philippines, President Rodrigo Duterte has complained of being “demonized” by “fake news.” Last month, the report continues, with our President, quote “laughing by his side” Duterte called reporters “spies.”
In July, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro complained to the Russian propaganda outlet, that the world media had “spread lots of false versions, lots of lies” about his country, adding, “This is what we call 'fake news' today, isn't it?”
There are more:
“A state official in Myanmar recently said, “There is no such thing as Rohingya. It is fake news,” referring to the persecuted ethnic group.
Leaders in Singapore, a country known for restricting free speech, have promised “fake news” legislation in the new year.”
And on and on. This feedback loop is disgraceful, Mr. President. Not only has the past year seen an American president borrow despotic language to refer to the free press, but it seems he has in turn inspired dictators and authoritarians with his own language. This is reprehensible.
We are not in a “fake news” era, as Bashar Assad says. We are, rather, in an era in which the authoritarian impulse is reasserting itself, to challenge free people and free societies, everywhere.
In our own country, from the trivial to the truly dangerous, it is the range and regularity of the untruths we see that should be cause for profound alarm, and spur to action. Add to that the by-now predictable habit of calling true things false, and false things true, and we have a recipe for disaster. As George Orwell warned, “The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those who speak it.”
Any of us who have spent time in public life have endured news coverage we felt was jaded or unfair. But in our positions, to employ even idle threats to use laws or regulations to stifle criticism is corrosive to our democratic institutions. Simply put: it is the press’s obligation to uncover the truth about power. It is the people’s right to criticize their government. And it is our job to take it.
What is the goal of laying siege to the truth? President John F. Kennedy, in a stirring speech on the 20th anniversary of the Voice of America, was eloquent in answer to that question:
“We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.”
Mr. President, the question of why the truth is now under such assault may well be for historians to determine. But for those who cherish American constitutional democracy, what matters is the effect on America and her people and her standing in an increasingly unstable world -- made all the more unstable by these very fabrications. What matters is the daily disassembling of our democratic institutions.
We are a mature democracy – it is well past time that we stop excusing or ignoring – or worse, endorsing -- these attacks on the truth. For if we compromise the truth for the sake of our politics, we are lost.

I sincerely thank my colleagues for their indulgence today. I will close by borrowing the words of an early adherent to my faith that I find has special resonance at this moment. His name was John Jacques, and as a young missionary in England he contemplated the question: "What is truth?" His search was expressed in poetry and ultimately in a hymn that I grew up with, titled “Oh Say, What is Truth.” It ends as follows:

“Then say, what is truth? 'Tis the last and the first,

Doctor Says Trump Has Heart Disease

CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta said that he believes tests reveal that President Trump has heart disease, The Hill reports.

Gupta said dating back to 2009, President Trump started to have “these tests that are actually looking for the presence of calcium in the blood vessels that lead to the heart.”

Said Gupta: “It was interesting when I spoke to Dr. Jackson at first, he said, he passed all the tests with flying colors. When I asked him specifically about that test, he did then concede that, in fact, the president does have heart disease. They’re going to be increasing the medications, including the cholesterol-lowering medications to try and combat that, but there’s no question, by all standards, by all metrics, anyway a doctor or cardiologist will look at it, the president does have heart disease.”

The problem with the Trump is crazy argument is that most people really don't understand mental illness. There are actually a finite amount of mental illnesses. Most of them fall into a few categories

Addiction/impulse disorder
Anxiety disorder
Mood disorder
Obsessive compulsive disorder
Personality disorder
Psychotic disorder

In nearly all cases, these disorders encompass multiple symptoms.

For instance someone with an addiction/impulse disorder would suffer from things like compulsive gambling, alcohol addiction, drug addiction, stealing. The idea that someone would be diagnosed with an addiction disorder because he tweets four or five times a day is patently ridiculous. But even if you argued that the few minutes a day used to tweet was a type of impulse disorder, it's inconceivable that someone with such an impulse disorder would otherwise live for 71 years without exhibiting other obvious symptoms.

You can go down the list, and find that in each case that someone might be suggesting a mental health issue, they are focused on one particular trait, while ignoring the idea that these disorders are not selective enough to allow for otherwise normal behavior in the other 99% of the person's life.

The doctor covered his mental state as it pertained to moods, anxiety, focus, endurance, cognitive ability. He praised the President for his temperament, specifically talked about his ability to handle the pressures, was openly impressed with his endurance and focus, and specifically stated that he was mentally "sharp".

Most doctors (and especially one this highly qualified) who spent time around an individual would be able to pick up on traits associated with mental illness. People with mood disorders or anxiety disorders or compulsive disorders generally do not live 71 years without being diagnosed.

This doctor was asked about the opinions that have been given by certain doctors. He called them "Tabloid psychiatrists". I'd say that's a pretty accurate description.

Well no, of course not, because it is not a test of intelligence.

Nobody is claiming that it was an intelligence test. It's a cognitive test. I believe people know the difference without a link.

But if you watched the Press conference (and if you didn't then it would sort of stupid to argue with people who did watch it)... you would remember the doctor made several specific references to Trump's mental alertness, his mental sharpness, his ability to focus, and his deal with stress. Overall, I was somewhat taken aback by the glowing terms that the doctor used in his description of the President's overall health.

The general responsibility of the report is to determine whether Trump is both physically and mentally up to the task of being President, which was emphatically confirmed by the doctor. This coming from a professional who has the comparison of also attending to Barack Obama.

Many people are still hoping to come up with a way to end the Trump Presidency. A "low intelligence level" wouldn't qualify for impeachment or 25th amendment... and even if it did, I am quite certain Donald Trump would score high on any of those tests.

The goal was (and still is) to show Trump is mentally unable to perform his tasks as President (whether that be because he is emotionally stunted, insane, or suffering from dementia). This doctor dispelled that very emphatically, by offering in strong terms that the President is physically and mentally fit for office.

wphamilton said...

perhaps wp can clarify (why Trump beat Hillary if he's so dumb). the liberal narrative on this has become so muddled.

I made no secret of it, since the 2016 Primaries first began, that by corruptly forcing the nomination of an unelectable candidate (Hillary) the DNC was making a huge mistake. You may recall my frequent warning and grousing that in fact, the only way someone like Trump could possibly be elected was to run Hillary against him. Well YOU did claim it was, because you wondered (somewhat condescendingly) whether I'd still claim that Trump was not intelligent after this test.

The test was to determine whether he was physically and mentally competent to function normally. Up to the task of being President is a different question, having additional requirements, and entirely outside of the scope of a medical examination.

Was there a psychological evaluation, beyond determining that Trump had basic cognitive function?

wphamilton said...

A "low intelligence level" wouldn't qualify for impeachment or 25th amendment... and even if it did, I am quite certain Donald Trump would score high on any of those tests.

It is because a low intelligence would't disqualify him I personally had no expectations from this medical exam. It's also my personal opinion that his low intelligence is a strong positive factor among his core support, making an IQ test doubly pointless.

Trump wouldn't score high on any of those tests. Probably average, or within one standard deviation below average.

C.H. Truth said...

Well YOU did claim it was, because you wondered (somewhat condescendingly) whether I'd still claim that Trump was not intelligent after this test.

Actually I didn't wonder. I stated flat out that it wouldn't change your mind. The reality is your beliefs about Trumps intelligence levels are so deeply embedded in your mind that I don't believe anything will change it.

But again, WP... you continue to "miss the point" entirely.

The doctor's job was not to declare one way or the other how "smart" the President is (although he certainly implied that he is impressed with the President's abilities). The doctor's job is tell us whether or not he if physically and mentally fit for the job.

Someone being "mentally sharp" and having a high degree of "cognitive abilities" is very important to the ability to perform any job or task. In fact, there is probably a lot of overlap between your root intelligence levels and cognitive abilities. Most high IQ people have good cognitive functions and people with high cognitive functions would generally have a high IQ.

Perhaps this is one of those differences between someone who is "book smart" and "street smart". Someone with high cognitive abilities (ability to quickly learn, retain, solve problems, pay attention) is likely considered to be "street smart" even if they don't have much schooling. Someone who struggles with retention, problem solving, attention span, but can pick up complicated formulas, equations, and understand abstract situations... might be more what we call "book smart".

My son (who is on the autism scale) is a classic example of someone who has tested fairly average with root skills (memorization, etc) - but at genius levels when it deals with more abstract reasoning. If you give him 5 numbers and ask him to repeat them back, he will lose interest and not perform well. Give him those same 5 numbers, and ask him to repeat them back in numerical order and his brain fires up and he gets it right every time. The more complicated the request is, the better he does.

In many ways he is brilliant, but would probably struggle on a some of the normal cognitive memorization and retention testing.

On the flip side, Trump has a college degree from a fairly prestigious business school. He would likely perform quite high on a general IQ test, and he obviously has high cognitive abilities.

Your "opinion" that he is dumb is based... well... on your opinion.

wphamilton said...

i mean, just look at the basis of this post - the media frenzy over trump's physical exam results. sane people are happy and perhaps relieved to know that our president is in excellent health. other's are simply devastated and in complete denial convincing themselves that this just can't be.

the ultimate irony of course is the fact that THEIR chosen candidate couldn't walk a short flight of stairs without assistance and had to be tossed like a side of beef into the back of her van after collapsing on the anniversary of 9/11. the picture of health? hardly. a sickly alcoholic is more like it. lucky for us we have a real live example of a sickly alcoholic on this blog to use as a reference point.

He won the nomination based on other factors. - yes, of course

Actually I am only suggesting that the test measures what the test measures... which is cognitive abilities.

Seems the only confusion here, is that you do not seem to believe that having good cognitive skills (memory, problem solving, etc...) has any bearing on someone's ability to perform a job.

I would offer that having cognitive skills is at least as important as having a generic high I.Q. There are a lot of book smart people out there, that I wouldn't hire to pick up my laundry. Give me some people who are quick on their feet, have good memories, and problem solving skills.

Furthermore, as it pertains to Trump, the only test we have is the Cognitive test... which he performed at a high level. We don't have any sort of generic IQ test (as most people do not take IQ tests). As far as his intelligence is concern, we disagree on how well he would do on such a test.

But I would bet you one thing... if you knew beforehand that he would be taking the Montreal cognitive test, you would have likely predicted that he would have come in below average (or average at best).

Seems the only confusion here, is that you do not seem to believe that having good cognitive skills (memory, problem solving, etc...) has any bearing on someone's ability to perform a job.

You still haven't looked at the test. Personally I'd be hesitant to make such pronouncements, especially with phrases such as "you do not seem to believe", without informing myself first. Too much potential for embarrassment ...

The "problem solving" literally consisted of naming a drawing of a lion, and placing "1" before "2". His "problem solving ability" is shown by that test to be likely at least equal to non-functioning mentally handicapped person. And you think that must have bearing on his ability to function as President.

wphamilton said...

your error is in assuming that anyone here who voted for and supports trump HAS been fooled. i was a cruz supporter

I know that you were, but are you taken in now with this stable genius spiel? A plurality of Republicans did vote for Trump in the primaries, do you think they weren't fooled? Trump WAS the only person that Hillary had a chance of defeating, but few of them could accept that reality.

wphamilton said...

the stable genius spiel is catnip for the media. meaningless to an intelligent non-media person.

and i don't agree that CH is overstating anything. you could very well be misinterpreting his interpretation. the doc did come across as enthusiastic at times, and his constant use of "you know" was annoying, but if you watch it you'll also note the absolutely boorish and comical behavior by the press poolo. the questions asked with the exception of a few were absolutely idiotic. so maybe the doc used too much emphasis at times. he was addressing a room democrats with bylines.

Well Again, WP...

You attack a well established and well respected test, because you see it as just identifying a camel. Ask yourself why the medical profession would rely on a test where the main points are telling the difference between a camel and a cow? Tell us why the average person doesn't score 30 out of 30 every time if it is remedial?

From what I understand about the test (reading about it generically from information that was out there before Trump took it and ignoring anything written about it since)... the idea is that for many of the questions, you get no points for getting them correct (but can have them taken away for being wrong) while you many times get points later for correctly remembering items from earlier.

In other words, you wouldn't get points for identifying three animals, or putting five numbers in order... but you would get the points for remembering those animals or what those numbers were later in the test.

The test does have valid reasoning, WP. The doctor in question (a highly respected military doctor) would not otherwise have chosen it.

But I guess we can chalk this up to more "unintuitive thinking" based on your belief that pretty much nothing that has to do with Trump can be taken at face value... and literally everything from business schools, to businesses, to television, to politics, to doctors... is all a giant conspiracy to make one person look good... when in fact you are quite certain he is an idiot who can't tie his own shoes.

Oh man, you just don't stop do you?

It's not an "attack" on the test to tell you what the test is actually for.

It's fine for what it does test. It does not test problem solving ability.

Tell us why the average person doesn't score 30 out of 30 every time if it is remedial?

The average person is likely to get something wrong in 30 questions, no matter what they are.

You never did answer, did the doctor perform a psychological evaluation on Trump?

Commonsense said...

Nope, the Montreal Cognitive test, the Medical examination and observations all indicate a psychological evaluation was not necessary.

The opinion of one wphamilton is not relevant.

C.H. Truth said...

It's not an "attack" on the test to tell you what the test is actually for.

WP... this is what you do.

You and I do not disagree on what the test does or doesn't do. We fundamentally agree that this is a fairly generic cognitive test designed to root out cognitive problems and otherwise determine someone's basic cognitive abilities.

But no matter how many times I state this, you demand that there is some sort of disagreement... and that somehow if you can prove that the test does not test for "intelligence" or test for "insanity" that there is some implication that he must then be unintelligent or insane.

It's a total straw man... as most of your arguments about Trump are. Very likely because you are simply factually unable to take anything about him at face value.

The reality is that this test was just part of the overall evaluation of the President by the Doctor. Based on the test results and other evaluations and observations over the past year the doctor made his assessment.

So you can argue that the test doesn't prove anything, but that is not really the argument. The argument involves more than just the one test. The doctor in question (the person most qualified to judge the President's fitness) suggests that he is physically in good shape and mentally sharp. A 30 out of 30 only reinforces that (doesn't prove it) and I am guessing that the doctor agreed to involve the test as reinforcement.

Moreover the doctor specifically rejected opinions that the President was not sane as "tabloid psychiatry". He is the professional responsible for attending to the President. He has a moral and legal responsibility to be honest with his assessment.

He is also under no obligation to order psychiatric testing of the President just because arm-chair tabloid psychologists (and Trump critics like yourself) demand it.

He performed the correct test based on the situation. The only necessary test in his mind. His opinion is the one that matters.

this is what made the alky ejaculate all over himself:

One Trump associate who spoke to the president Wednesday night said Trump thought Kelly’s comments made him look bad and like he was giving in to Democrats.

The president, this person said, particularly disliked the word “uninformed” that appeared in news reports and has chafed for weeks at the characterization of himself as not intelligent and flighty in the best-selling book about his presidency by Michael Wolff.

The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to talk more candidly, said it was “inevitable” for Trump to be angry with his chief of staff and that it was surprising that it hadn’t happened before.

It was a positive sign for Kelly, the person said, that Trump didn’t mention the chief of staff’s name explicitly in the tweet. There seems to be no effort afoot to make a change in the chief of staff position, the person said.

This past year, 2017, was among the warmest years on record, according to new data released by NASA and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.

The planet's global surface temperature last year was the second highest since 1880, NASA says. NOAA calls it the third warmest year on record, because of slight variations in the ways that they analyze temperatures.

Both put 2017 behind 2016's record temperatures. And "both analyses show that the five warmest years on record have all taken place since 2010," NASA said in a press release.

The trend is seen most dramatically in the Arctic, NASA says, as sea ice continues to melt.

"Despite colder than average temperatures in any one part of the world, temperatures over the planet as a whole continue the rapid warming trend we've seen over the last 40 years," said Gavin Schmidt, the director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

In NASA's rankings, 2016 was the warmest ever. But it adds that 2016's temperatures were heightened by an El Niño event. "In an analysis where the effects of the recent El Niño and La Niña patterns were statistically removed from the record, 2017 would have been the warmest year on record," NASA says.

The warming trend was clear in both land and sea temperature measurements. According to NOAA, 2017 average land surface temperatures were 2.36 degrees Fahrenheit higher than the 20th century average, while sea temperatures were 1.21 degrees Fahrenheit higher than that benchmark.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday passed a bill to fund government operations through Feb. 16 and avoid agency shutdowns this weekend when existing money expires.

The bill still must be approved by the Senate, where it faces an uncertain future.

(Reporting by Richard Cowan; Editing by Eric Beech)

President Trump is angry with his chief of staff, John Kelly, for describing his past immigration comments as “uninformed” on Wednesday and generally talking about him like a child.

Trump's response? To do something Thursday that had even more allies talking about him like he's an uninformed child.

Kelly's comments Wednesday had Trump fuming at him, according to The Washington Post's John Wagner, Josh Dawsey and Robert Costa:

Trump associates said the president was furious with Kelly both for what he said and for the tone he used, which Trump thought made it appear he was a child who had to be managed. ...

The president, this person said, particularly disliked the word “uninformed” appeared in news reports and has chafed for weeks at the characterization of him as not intelligent and flighty in the best-selling book about his presidency by author Michael Wolff.

The person, who requested anonymity to speak more candidly, said it was “inevitable” for Trump to be angry with his chief of staff and that it was actually surprising that it hadn't happened before.

It's unclear why Trump is picking up only on this trend of aides reportedly talking about him like he's a child. Washington Post contributor Daniel W. Drezner has for many months been cataloguing instance after instance of anonymous Trump aides and allies doing exactly that.

But increasingly this week, it's no longer so anonymous. And Trump has himself to thank for it.

Even as he was upset with Kelly, Trump chose Thursday to send off a tweet that suggested he was indeed clueless about major congressional legislation. After Trump tweeted that the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) should be taken out of a short-term spending bill, the White House clarified that Trump still supported the bill. Trump appeared to misunderstand that the short-term, 30-day government funding bill actually contained a six-year extension of CHIP, not a mere 30-day extension.

And the way Trump's Senate allies have talked about his handling of this episode sounds a whole lot like what Kelly was saying.

Here's the No. 2-ranking Senate Republican, John Cornyn (Tex.): “I don’t know whether it’s clear to the president what we are trying to do is reauthorize CHIP long term and not just for 30 days.”

The No. 3-ranking Republican, John Thune (S.D.): “I don’t know. How did you interpret it? ... I’m at a loss interpreting most of his tweets.”

Luis Bracamontes, a 37-year-old from Mexico who has entered the United States illegally on multiple occasions, is currently standing trial for the murders of Sacramento sheriff's Deputy Danny Oliver and Placer sheriff's Deputy Michael Davis Jr., according to the Sacramento Bee.

The suspect, who has admitted to both murders multiple times, laughed in court as prosecutors described his brutal crime spree, which began in a Motel 6 parking lot and ended after a six-hour chase.

"I wish I had killed more of the motherf-----s," he told the court with a smile. "I will break out soon and I will kill more, kill whoever gets in front of me."

The doctor did dispel the concerns. Every time and in every way he was asked by the press about it.

He went so far as to suggest that anyone questioning the President's sanity was practicing "tabloid psychiatry".

And yes, the doctor (not me) suggested that Trump's score on the cognitive test precluded the need for any further testing into his mental fitness.

So the reality here, WP... is your argument is not with me. It's with the well respected Presidential physician and his team of 12 medical experts. You continue to argue this as if they put all of their medical opinions in the basket of one cognitive test... when in fact, the doctors diagnosis was much more comprehensive.

I happen to find no reason not to believe the medical professionals who have been attending to the President for the past year... while quite obviously, your own bias against Trump gives you reason to question them.

he also went on to say that he interacts with the president at some level, even in passing, virtually every day. and that if there were signs of a cognitive and/or mental impairment, those episodes of interaction would have afforded him the opportunity to pick up on them if they existed, which they do not.

the presser with the doc revealed nothing new about trump's mental state, but spoke volumes as to just how fucked in the head our media is these days.

Their “questions”—which were not phrased to elicit information but to score political points—almost all contained an underlying premise: that the president is manifestly unsuited to his high office, and the burden of proof is on the doctor to prove otherwise. Even when he stated in unequivocal terms that there is nothing physically or mentally wrong with Trump, the press corps practically sneered in his face, like small children demanding to be convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that the sun will, in fact, rise in the east tomorrow. “Some people just have great genes,” said Dr. Jackson. But in the mechanistic world-view of “progressivism,” there can be no mysteries; everything must have a cause and effect, tied directly to diet, exercise, sex, race, and climate change. Things cannot simply just be.

The FBI is investigating whether a top Russian banker with ties to the Kremlin illegally funneled money to the National Rifle Association to help Donald Trump win the presidency, two sources familiar with the matter have told McClatchy.

FBI counterintelligence investigators have focused on the activities of Alexander Torshin, the deputy governor of Russia’s central bank who is known for his close relationships with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and the NRA, the sources said.

It is illegal to use foreign money to influence federal elections.

It’s unclear how long the Torshin inquiry has been ongoing, but the news comes as Justice Department Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s sweeping investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election, including whether the Kremlin colluded with Trump’s campaign, has been heating up.

And yes, the doctor (not me) suggested that Trump's score on the cognitive test precluded the need for any further testing into his mental fitness.

I watched the whole press briefing. The doctor didn't address his mental fitness at all, nothing beyond ruling out alzheimers and similar debilities. He didn't test mental fitness, nor was there any psychological evaluation.

Based on his daily interactions with Trump he saw no indicators of that degree of mental deterioration, and didn't think that anything was necessary in that regard. He's the one who would know, and I'd 100% accept that with or without the Montreal test. Trump doesn't have Alzhimers, he's not senile, he hasn't had a stroke severely handicapping his mental cognition. The doctor wasn't going to administer any such test; it wasn't necessary and consequently the result, to him, isn't very important.

Trump insisted on it. Basically, "people are calling me dumb and insane, so let's have a test to prove that I have basic mental function." Enough people, perhaps, will misunderstand what the test was to invent a narrative that it eliminates concerns about Trump's intelligence and sanity, going so far as to say that it proves he is "fit for the office."

When asked directly, the doctor declined to give that particular evaluation. He said it's not his role (25th concerns etc), and he has a point. In short, he performed a health assessment and pronounced Trump as physically fit for the duration. Mentally, again asked directly, he said basically how should he know without a crystal ball? If something comes up that he observes, he would go through channels but he's seen no indication of mental debility.

Just take the test for what it is, and the whole examination which was good news for Trump. It's all the extra bullshit that I react against.

Commonsense said...

The point is WP is that you don't perform "Mental Tests" unless there is some indication of an observed problem.

Hell there wouldn't have even been a Cognitive Test had the president not asked for one to stick it to his enemies.

So the bottom line is that in his entire year of office neither his doctors nor anyone else close to him observe any mental deficiency whatsoever.

In reality, the only mental deficiency observed arise in certain members of the white house press corps who still clung to their fantasy beyond all reason.
