So this is where certain people get this argument...

The Trump Fallacy

Despite what some of the president’s supporters think, you cannot celebrate his policies and ignore his poor behavior.
This image of Mr. Trump as a political Robin Hood whose illicit behavior is justified because it serves a greater good is doubly flawed. First, the lying and vulgarity are unrelated to the policies Mr. Trump’s base wants implemented. Second, his supporters purport to seek a restoration of American founding principles. This increasingly strains credulity. But if they profess constitutionalism, they should at least understand that it is more about process than policy. Constitutions depend on habits and traditions, not the momentary outcomes they produce. Mr. Trump’s upending of these customs, not his transient policies, will form the legacy that endures.

The major irony here is that the author (Greg Weiner) is using the term "fallacy" in his title, and appears somewhat oblivious to what it means. Someone believing that an argument is "flawed" (because they disagree with it) does not make the argument a fallacy. In fact, it might make the argument that it is a fallacy an actual fallacy, which is doubly ironic.

The reality is that it is entirely possible to celebrate the policies of a politician while ignoring the bad behavior of a politician. In fact, it's not only possible, it's very likely required. There may actually not be any policies out there, that are not tied to a politician who engages in poor behavior. Were people not allowed to celebrate the peace and prosperity of the 1990's because the President happened to be getting his knob polished by a 20 year old Intern?

Furthermore, the argument that Mr Weiner is making in regards to constitutionalism is pretty much a straw man fallacy. As someone who considers themselves a constitutionalist, I can assure you that his description of what that term means does not match my description. The Constitution basically exists separate from whatever is happening at any given moment. It does not require a "tradition" or a "habit" to remain the law of the land.  It does not depend on the President behaving in a manner that liberal journalist approve of. It is not undercut by Presidential affairs, political scandals, criminal behavior by politicians, or by a President who tweets too much. It certainly does not require the next President to behave like the last President.

In fact, the argument that the constitution is so fragile that it can be reduced to rubble by Donald Trump is not an argument worth the paper it would be printed on (if you so chose to print it), and certainly not worth the $1/week to subscribe to the NYT.

At the end of the day, this has become the new talking points memo from the left. They are desperate to not let the 2020 election become a referendum on that is happening in the United States. They are desperate to not allow the 2020 election become about policies debates, flush with evidence of what didn't work and what is working. They desperately want you to believe that none of what is happening has anything to do with any policies enacted since Trump has become President. They desperately want people to believe that Trump is somehow just at the right place at the right time, and that someone else (in fact anyone else) would garner the same results, without all of the Trump drama.

The bottom line play from the left is that they desperately want to make this election all about the "behavior" of a President that they so deeply abhor. They, in turn, want everything else written off as irrelevant. They've already succeeded in gaslighting their faithful with this argument. But I doubt it will have the same effect on those who actually care about things like policy and results.

WASHINGTON — The government’s own internal watchdog warned as far back as May that conditions at an El Paso, Texas, border station were so bad that border agents were arming themselves against possible riots, countering Friday’s assertion by a top Trump administration official that reports of poor conditions for migrants were “unsubstantiated.”

In an internal report prepared by the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General and obtained by NBC News, inspectors noted during a May 7 tour of a border station in the El Paso sector that only four showers were available for 756 immigrants, more than half of the immigrants were being held outside, and immigrants inside were being kept in cells maxed out at more than five times their capacity.

The "behavior" of the President that they so deeply abhor is just hate for the Orange President. Leaving children in abhorrent conditions is the responsibility of the former President from Kenya.

Trump can do no wrong!

You believe that the President has been the best thing ever before. And has kept us safe because of the withdrawal from the Iran nuclear power treaty has kept us safe! But the truth is that we are not safer!

Iran has breached the limit on the amount of enriched uranium it is allowed to hold, in violation of the nuclear deal it signed with the U.S. and other world powers in 2015, the state-run news agency IRNA reported Monday.

IRNA quoted Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif as making the announcement, and inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog, later confirmed that Iran had accumulated more enriched uranium than allowed under the deal.

A spokesperson for the agency said its director general, Yukiya Amano, had informed the Board of Governors on Monday that it had verified that Iran's total enriched uranium stockpile had exceeded 300 kg (661 pounds) of uranium enriched up to 3.67 percent U-235 "or the equivalent in different chemical forms" — the limit set by the nuclear deal.

Trump leans over and quietly whispers "tell Vladimir I'll have more flexibility after the election". And schiff, Nadler and waters are thrilled that they have proof of collusion.

Oh wait....um....nevermind. But Trump's probably guilty of thinking it.

He invited Putin to meddle in the next election. He also mourned that he can't murder journalists who have written "fake news" about the President and his family.

Well if he built a detention center with only four showers, then by all means it's his fault. Obviously Trump didn't build these and has no control over how many showers were built.

Trump has been in office for two and a half years now. He could have improved the conditions in the detention center rooms!

But instead he is building his wall that Mexico was going to build!

It's Trump's fault!

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said...

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sharply criticized the “violent culture” of U.S. Border Patrol agents Monday after a new report exposed a Facebook group where current and former agents joked about migrant deaths and posted sexist images of the New York congresswoman.

On Monday, ProPublica published messages from a Facebook group of roughly 9,500 Border Patrol agents named “I’m 10-15,” a reference to the agency’s code of “aliens in custody.” Among the messages were jokes about a 16-year-old Guatemalan migrant who died in Border Patrol custody in May and sexist references to Ocasio-Cortez, including illustrations of her performing oral sex on migrants and President Trump.

The group, Ocasio-Cortez said, also suggested raising money for an agent to throw a burrito at her and Rep. Veronica Escobar, a Democrat who represents the El Paso, Tex. Area. The two freshmen congresswomen are among a delegation visiting the border on Monday.

“This just broke: a secret Facebook group of 9,500 CBP officers discussed making a GoFundMe for officers to harm myself & Rep. Escobar during our visit to CBP facilities & mocked migrant deaths,” wrote Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter, linking to the story. “This isn’t about ‘a few bad eggs.’ This is a violent culture.”

“9,500 CBP officers sharing memes about dead migrants and discussing violence and sexual misconduct towards members of Congress,” added Ocasio-Cortez. “How on earth can CBP’s culture be trusted to care for refugees humanely? PS I have no plans to change my itinerary & will visit the CBP station today.”

•A vulgar illustration of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez being forced by Donald Trump to engage in oral sex with the president, text reading

•“That's right bitches. The masses have spoken and today democracy won. I have returned. To everyone who knows the real me and had my back I say thank you. To everyone else? This is what I have to say.....”

•A post concerning the death of a 16-year-old boy from Guatemala who died after being detained in a DHS contracted facility. The responses include GIFs saying “Oh well,” as well as other soulless commentary like “If he dies, he dies.”

•Frequent comments calling female representatives touring border facilities “bitches,” and “hoes,” and “scum buckets,” and other intense sexism and misogyny.

•One member jokes about throwing a “10-15 burrito at one of these bitches,” referring to Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Veronica Escobar.

With what money exactly?

But herein lies the problem Roger. The root cause is not that the detention centers are inadequately built. The root cause is that too many people are crossing the border and being detained.

So instead of pretending the solution is to add som porta-potties or remodel a fairly new facility (because we decided to follow the law and use them) - we should be focussing on preventing people from being detained (and no, that does not mean you just let them go).

Root cause, Roger...

A Republican has an anal issue.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) called former special counsel Robert Mueller an "anal opening" ahead of the former FBI chief's public testimony before Congress.

"He's done some irreparable damage to some things and he's got to answer for them," Gohmert told Politico. He is one of 25 Republicans on the House Intelligence and Judiciary committees who get to grill Mueller during the back-to-back hearings scheduled later this month.

The Texas lawmaker added that his reading of the former special counsel's report did little to temper his animosity toward Mueller: "It reinforced the anal opening that I believe Mueller to be."
