From the NOAA

Keep in mind that the President's tweet in question came out the morning of Sept 1

So (below) would have been the mapping of what specific areas that the NOAA believed would be ultimately affected by the hurricane at the time the President would have sent the tweet. At the time the hurricane was still category 4-5 and we had no idea what it could do.

For the Birmingham affiliated National weather forecast to suggest at this time that Alabama was not going to feel any impact from the Hurricane does actually fly in the face of what was being stated by the NOAA the night before. There were parts of Alabama that would be outside of the impact, but there would have been other parts (specifically those above the Florida panhandle) that certainly could have felt the effects.

To be clear, that affiliate stated in absolute terms that Alabama would not be impacted at all? But it's Trump that the media is attempting to chastise for being wrong, and the NOAA whom they are upset with for standing behind their reporting.

This should go down as possibly the dumbest political scandal that the media has attempted to pin on the President. But the reality is that your mainstream media will continue to push it even as it becomes more clear that they (not the President) were wrong.

Alabama might have been gotten a little rain. None of them showed that Alabama would have been hit by the storm center, where the winds would have been devastating.

But the President was clearly wrong about the impact of the hurricane eye on Alabama.

Your getting worse than the President and his obsession against the media and the Democratic party.

China’s Trade With U.S. Shrinks

Associated Press: “China’s trade with the United States is falling as the two sides prepare for negotiations with no signs of progress toward ending a tariff war that threatens global economic growth. Imports of American goods tumbled 22% in August from a year earlier to $10.3 billion, customs data showed Sunday. Exports to the United States, China’s biggest market, sank 16% to $44.4 billion.”

Manufacturers Invest Less as Trade War Continues

Wall Street Journal: “U.S. manufacturers are investing less in their factories and workforces as the trade dispute with China makes it more difficult for executives to anticipate costs and demand. The shifting contours of the tariffs that the U.S. and China have applied to each other’s goods are prompting some companies to put business plans on hold. Others are cutting back investments as trade volumes and economic growth slow around the world.

“These companies are buying fewer machines for their factory floors and shortening shifts. The knock-on effect means lower sales for those suppliers and less pay for workers, contributing to slower U.S. economic growth.”

Trump Will Visit Baltimore This Week

Just weeks after lambasting Baltimore as a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess,” President Trump will visit the Maryland city to huddle with congressional Republicans — a gathering that could draw local protests and reignite an ugly feud between the White House and the black-majority locality, the Washington Post reports.

The President didn't state anything specific about Alabama. He provided a list of all the states that could potentially be affected by the Hurricane and stated that it might be much worse than they had been thinking because the Hurricane had reignited into a category 5 again. Obviously it petered out and caused much less damage along the eastern coast.

But if (at the time of Trump's tweet) Alabama was "potentially" going to feel the effects of the storm, then why would you "exclude" it from the list?

Please explain why you would exclude them?

Do so in a logical manner that takes into account that the NOAA still thought there was a real chance that they would get hit with at least the outer portions of the storm?

I live in Minnesota where we have confirmed tornado touchdowns, tornado warnings, and tornado watches. Just like we have thunderstorm warnings and watches. We would never get upset at the local news if they suggested that the watch pushed into a county that wasn't thought to be at the "eye" of the potential storms.

Your explanation now (that Alabama wasn't in the eye) is downright silly, because neither the NOAA or Trump claimed that Alabama was going to see the "eye of the storm"... because "eyes of a hurricane" are primarily offshore since a hurricane is by nature a storm at sea.

NOAA staff warned in Sept. 1 directive against contradicting Trump

NEARLY A WEEK BEFORE the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration publicly backed President Trump over its own scientists, a top NOAA official WARNED ITS STAFF AGAINST CONTRADICTING THE PRESIDENT.

In an agencywide directive sent Sept. 1 to National Weather Service personnel, HOURS AFTER TRUMP ASSERTED, WITH NO EVIDENCE, THAT ALABAMA “WOULD MOST LIKELY BE HIT (much) harder than anticipated,” staff was told to “only stick with official National Hurricane Center forecasts if questions arise from some national level social media posts which hit the news this afternoon.”

They were also told not to “provide any opinion,” according to a copy of the email obtained by The Washington Post.

A NOAA meteorologist who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution said the note, understood internally to be referring to Trump, came after the National Weather Service office in Birmingham contradicted Trump by tweeting Alabama would “NOT see any impacts from the hurricane.”

The Birmingham office sent the tweet after receiving a flurry of phone calls from concerned residents following Trump’s message.

The agency sent a similar message warning scientists and meteorologists not to speak out on Sept. 4, after Trump showed a hurricane map from Aug. 29 modified with a hand-drawn, half-circle in black Sharpie around Alabama.

“This is the first time I’ve felt pressure from above to not say what truly is the forecast,” the meteorologist said. “It’s hard for me to wrap my head around. One of the things we train on is to dispel inaccurate rumors and ultimately that is what was occurring — ultimately what the Alabama office did is provide a forecast with their tweet, that is what they get paid to do.”

An NWS spokesperson said, “NWS leadership sent this guidance to field staff so they (and the entire agency) could maintain operational focus on Dorian and other severe weather hazards without distraction.”

Late Friday afternoon, NOAA officials further angered scientists within and beyond the agency by releasing a statement, attributed to an unnamed agency spokesperson, supporting Trump’s claims on Alabama and chastising the agency’s Birmingham meteorologists for speaking in absolutes.

That statement set off a firestorm among scientists, who attacked NOAA officials for bending to Trump’s will.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Alabama had never been included in hurricane advisories and Trump's information, based on less authoritative graphics than an official forecast, was outdated even at the time.

In the tempestuous aftermath, some meteorologists spoke on social media of protesting when the acting NOAA chief, Neil Jacobs , is scheduled to speak at a National Weather Association meeting Tuesday — in Huntsville, Alabama.

Former officials saw a political hand at work in NOAA's statement disavowing the Birmingham tweet. The statement was issued by an anonymous "spokesperson," a departure from the norm for federal agencies that employ people to speak for them by name.

"This falls into such uncharted territory," said W. Craig Fugate, who was Florida emergency management chief under Republican Gov. Jeb Bush and director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency under Democratic President Barack Obama. "You have science organizations putting out statements against their own offices. For the life of me I don't think I would have ever faced this under President Obama or Governor Bush."

Jane Lubchenco, NOAA administrator during the Obama administration said: "It is truly sad to see political appointees undermining the superb, life-saving work of NOAA's talented and dedicated career servants. Scientific integrity at a science agency matters."

The White House declined to comment Saturday when asked if it had directed NOAA to release the statement. NOAA officials also didn't respond to requests for comment. After spending the morning at his Virginia golf club, Trump tweeted that he'd like to move on from the matter but the news media "won't leave it alone."

In an effort to address the wounds, leaders at the National Weather Service on Saturday sent a memo to employees praising their work and asserting that "we continue to embrace and uphold the essential integrity of the entire forecast process as it was applied by ALL NWS offices," an emphasis no doubt directed at forecasters chastised by the NOAA statement.

Retired Adm. David Titley, former NOAA operations chief during the Obama administration and a former meteorology professor at Pennsylvania State University said NOAA's leadership showed "moral cowardice" and officials should have resigned instead of issuing the statement. Joe Friday said he would have quit had he been in top officials' shoes.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Titley said the episode might feed distrust of forecasts that help people make life-or-death decisions whether to evacuate.

"For people who look for excuses not to take action when their lives or property are threatened ... I think this can potentially feed that," Titley said.

Former NOAA deputy administration Monica Medina, who served in the Obama and Clinton administrations, said "it will make us less safe as a country."

And Justin Kenney, who headed the agency's communications in the Obama administration, said "by politicizing weather forecasts, the president ... puts more people — including first responders — in harm's way."

Bill Read, who became director of the National Hurricane Center director during the Republican George W. Bush administration, said on Facebook the NOAA statement showed either an embarrassing lack of understanding of forecasting or "a lack of courage on their part by not supporting the people in the field who are actually doing the work. Heartbreaking."

A retired chief of the center's hurricane forecasting desk, James Franklin, said on Twitter that the NOAA statement had thrown the Birmingham office "under the bus" — a phrase several ex-officials used. He said the Birmingham office's tweet was "spot-on and an appropriate response to the President's misleading tweet that morning."

The American Meteorological Society said NOAA's criticism of the Birmingham office was unwarranted and the forecasters "should have been commended for their quick action based on science in clearly communicating the lack of threat to the citizens of Alabama."

Last Sunday, Trump tweeted : "In addition to Florida - South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama, will most likely be hit (much) harder than anticipated. Looking like one of the largest hurricanes ever. Already category 5."

At the time, the hurricane center's forecast path — including a large cone of uncertainty — did not go farther west than the eastern third of Georgia.

The weather service in Birmingham quickly followed up with its tweet, which one meteorologist there said was prompted by residents' concerns about what to do. It said: "Alabama will NOT see any impacts from #Dorian. We repeat, no impacts from Hurricane #Dorian will be felt across Alabama. The system will remain too far east."

NOAA verified that day that the "current forecast path of Dorian does not include Alabama" and an agency spokesman, Christopher Vaccaro, put his name to that.

NOAA's disavowal of the Birmingham tweet came late Friday. It said its forecasters "spoke in absolute terms that were inconsistent with probabilities from the best forecast products available at the time."

The highest percentage that tropical force storm winds — not stronger hurricane-force winds — would hit somewhere in Alabama was 11%, according to hurricane center charts, and the chances were briefly between 20% and 30% according to a graphic that was not a forecast and that was outdated by the time of Trump's warning.

Why would you exclude that in talking about those affected?

Isn't it also factually wrong for the Birmingham Weather station to provide a statement that said that there was "no chance" that Alabama would be affected?

The reality is simple here Roger. I provided you with the graphic that the NOAA would have been providing to the President.

Rather than acknowledge that graphic (because you are suffering from extreme cognitive dissonance) you instead resort to offering more C&P.

When you you going to get it through your feeble head that "I" do not garner my information from reading the media? ONLY A FUCKING IDIOT WOULD DO THAT!!!

I went directly to the NOAA and found the information that they posted just hours before Trump's tweet.

Having lived through a few of these storms, I can tell you from personal experience that dangerous winds start a long time before the eye of the storm passes by. And they stay a long time after the storm passes.

It's particularly scary for the elderly and people with chronic health problems. Once tropical storm force winds come, EMT services are halted and they are not resumed until the winds abate.

So if you have a heart attack during the storm you are SOL.

Well in this case there were forecasters who told people "Not to Worry:" and that there "was no chance they would be affected" when clearly at the time there was a very real possibility.

Mind you this is Alabama where manufacture and wood frame homes are far more common that concrete block homes so even tropical storm force winds is reason enough to evacuate.

The map in question was published by the NOAA.

The fact that you would trust a map published by then NYT over that of the NOAA is ironic, considering how much "climate change" true believers rely on the NOAA for their arguments.

But let's be fair. This argument is simply stupid and it is 99.99% an "I hate Trump" argument at this point. We are down to arguing about which map the President last saw (or should have last saw) when he made his tweet...

Which if we are being honest, shouldn't really matter anyways. The fact is (and nobody can dispute this) that Alabama was shown as being well within the range of the storm for quite a while. Even if the tweet included Alabama when that state had passed their most threatening time period, there is still nothing wrong with including the State in the warning.

Literally nothing at all. The fact you are making such a bfd out of it is indicative of how Trump "drives you crazy". Any other President included Alabama under the same circumstances and nobody would have said boo. Most certainly a subsidiary weather service would not have gone out of their way to contradict the NOAA in order to contradict the President (which is certainly what appears to have happened from a factual standpoint).

But at least we can all agree... it's not anti-science to question the NOAA anymore. It's an argument that Climate Change fanatics have sacrificed to the alter of being fully TDS controlled.

It manifests itself in Trump’s impulsiveness and vindictiveness; his craving for adulation; his misogyny, predatory sexual behavior, and sexualization of his daughters; his open admiration for brutal dictators; his remorselessness; and his lack of empathy and sympathy, including attacking a family whose son died while fighting for this country, mocking a reporter with a disability, and ridiculing a former POW. (When asked about Trump’s feelings for his fellow human beings, Trump’s mentor, the notorious lawyer Roy Cohn, reportedly said, “He pisses ice water.”)

The most recent example is the president’s bizarre fixation on falsely insisting that he was correct to warn that Alabama faced a major risk from Hurricane Dorian, to the point that he doctored a hurricane map with a black sharpie to include the state as being in the path of the storm.

“He's deteriorating in plain sight,” one Republican strategist who is in frequent contact with the White House told Business Insider on Friday. Asked why the president was obsessed with Alabama instead of the states that would actually be affected by the storm, the strategist said, “You should ask a psychiatrist about that; I'm not sure I'm qualified to comment.”

We have repeatedly heard versions of that sentiment over the course of Trump’s presidency. It’s said that speculating on Trump’s mental health is inappropriate and unwise, especially for those who are not formally trained in the fields of psychiatry or psychology.

Any other President included Alabama under the same circumstances and nobody would have said boo.

and if 0linsky had said that the gulf coast of Georgia was threatened, the alky would've given skeets a standing ovation.

But at least we can all agree... it's not anti-science to question the NOAA anymore.

Does that make their unsigned memo anything but a singular opinion trying to help trump???? Their research conclusive shows global warming and their modeling continuously proves to be correct...Only dumb fucks like you who are never wrong are still saying trump was correct....The NHC 9-1 clearly shows no Alabama impact!!!! Nothing to interpret at all you asshole!!!

And yet they forecast weather events and climate change.

Oh and the NWS is actually part of NOAA.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is an agency of the United States federal government that is tasked with providing weather forecasts, warnings of hazardous weather, and other weather-related products to organizations and the public for the purposes of protection, safety, and general information. It is a part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)branch of the Department of Commerce, and is headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland, within the Washington metropolitan area.[5][6] The agency was known as the United States Weather Bureau from 1890 until it adopted its current name in 1970.

It's kind of silly to refer to them as a separate agency. What we do know is the the National Hurricane Center is also part of NOAA and it is the branch who are experts in hurricane forecast.

So when it comes to forecasting tropical storm events I would tend to rely more on the experts at NHC than the local meteorologist at the weather bureau in Birmingham.

Monitoring and observing Earth systems with instruments and data collection networks.
Understanding and describing Earth systems through research and analysis of that data.

National Weather Service[edit]

Seal of the National Weather Service
The National Weather Service (NWS) is tasked with providing "weather, hydrologic and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas, for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy." This is done through a collection of national and regional centers, 13 river forecast centers (RFCs), and more than 120 local weather forecast offices (WFOs). They are charged with issuing weather and river forecasts, advisories, watches, and warnings on a daily basis. They issue more than 734,000 weather and 850,000 river forecasts, and more than 45,000 severe weather warnings annually. NOAA data is also relevant to the issues of global warming and ozone depletion.[citation needed]

The NWS operates NEXRAD, a nationwide network of Doppler weather radars which can detect precipitation and their velocities. Many of their products are broadcast on NOAA Weather Radio, a network of radio transmitters that broadcasts weather forecasts, severe weather statements, watches and warnings 24 hours a day.[18]

National Ocean Service[edit]
The National Ocean Service (NOS) focuses on ensuring that ocean and coastal areas are safe, healthy, and productive. NOS scientists, natural resource managers, and specialists serve America by ensuring safe and efficient marine transportation, promoting innovative solutions to protect coastal communities, and conserving marine and coastal places.[citation needed]

The National Ocean Service is composed of eight program offices: the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services,[19] the Coastal Services Center,[20] the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science,[21] the Office of Coast Survey,[22] the Office of National Geodetic Survey,[23] the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries[24] the Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management[25] and the Office of Response and Restoration.[26]

There are two NOS programs, namely the Mussel Watch Contaminant Monitoring Program and the NOAA Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) and two staff offices, the International Program Office and the Management and Budget Office.

Hey Denny...

It was technically the National Hurricane Center that provides this for the NOAA. The NOAA is a branch of the Government that is in control of all of this stuff.

So let me explain this to you like the
feeble minded man you obvious are.

- We had a hurricane
- The National Hurricane Center provides forecasting
- They forecast that Alabama was in the area of concern
- The President included Alabama in a tweet regarding hurricane
- A local affiliate NWF provided a statement in disagreement
- That affiliate did so without consulting the NHC or NOAA
- That affiliate openly admitted it was in response to the tweet
- The NOAA chastised the local affiliate

End of story.

You lose!!!!

Americans Overwhelmingly Back New Gun Measures

“Americans across party and demographic lines overwhelmingly support expanded background checks for gun buyers and allowing law enforcement to temporarily seize weapons from troubled individuals, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll, as President Trump and Republicans face fresh pressure to act.

“Although the poll finds a continued partisan divide on more far-reaching gun-control proposals, public opinion is firmly behind Democrats’ push for action as Congress returns to Washington on Monday. More Americans say they trust congressional Democrats over Trump to handle the nation’s gun laws, 51 percent to 36 percent, with independents siding with Democrats by a 17-point margin — a divide that could have political ramifications for the 2020 presidential and congressional elections.”

C.H. Truth said...

Well Denny...

Only thing that matters is that the NOAA and National Hurricane Center is responsible for briefing the Administration regarding Hurricanes... the National Hurricane Center "IS" part of the National Weather Service.

So the NHC is responsible for briefing the President on hurricane activity... not the Birmingham affiliate NWS outlet.

So what that particular NWS states is irrelevant to what the President is being told by the larger branch of the NWS in charge of Hurricane forecasting.

Moreover, the affiliate NWS made a statement judgement call on the path of a Hurricane WITHOUT consulting the National Hurricane Center.

anonymous said...

And you are categorically full of shit!!!! They both work for the commerce department asshole and publish the NWS hurricane forecasts for local and government planning!!!!! They forecast that Alabama was in the area of concern
-ALABAMA WAS NEVER MENTIONED IN A DISCUSSION OR A FORECAST AS AN AREA OF CONCERN ASSHOLE!!!
The President included Alabama in a tweet regarding hurricane

ROFLMFAO !!!

But what a beautiful morning it is.

C.H. Truth said...

they restated the NHC forecast..

Then why is it such a conspiracy that the NOAA directed all of their employees to specifically stand by the NHC forecast, rather than provide their own opinion?

If the NHC forecast actually contradicted the President rather than contradicting the Birmingham statement... then the anti-Trump media would be happy to listen to all of the NOAA employees repeat the official stance that the President was incorrect.

But alas... that is the problem. The NOAA website specifically reports the NHC information and also provides that information to the President. The NHC information will be the same as the maps I posted, and was in line with what the President tweeted.

You can't have it both ways, Denny!

But we certainly can now conclude that no government weather or climate agency can ever be trusted again... huh? Just have to discount it all. I mean if they cannot get a hurricane correct and provided bad information to the President then certainly we cannot pretend that they know anything about more difficult subjects like "climate change".

Chief Scientist to Investigate Why Agency Backed Trump

“The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s acting chief scientist said in an email to colleagues Sunday that he is investigating whether the agency’s response to President Trump’s Hurricane Dorian tweets constituted a violation of NOAA policies and ethics,” the Washington Post reports.

“In an email to NOAA staff that was obtained by The Washington Post, the official, Craig McLean, called the agency’s response ‘political’ and a ‘danger to public health and safety.'”
_______________

Oh well, now. THAT investigation is obviously nothing more than purely political.

No, wait. It's actually an investigation into whether what the agency did was purely and unethically political.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — The head of the National Weather Service issued a strong public defense Monday of forecasters who contradicted President Donald Trump's claim that Hurricane Dorian posed a threat to Alabama as it approached the United States.

Director Louis Uccellini said forecasters in Birmingham did the right thing Sept. 1 when they tried to combat public panic and rumors that Dorian posed a threat to Alabama. It was only later that they found out the source of the mistaken information, he said.

Speaking at a meeting of the National Weather Association, Uccellini said Birmingham forecasters "did what any office would do to protect the public."

"They did that with one thing in mind: public safety," said Uccellini, who prompted a standing ovation from hundreds of forecasters by asking members of the Birmingham weather staff to stand.

Earlier, the president of the 2,100-member association, Paul Schlatter, said any forecast office "would have done the exact same thing" as the Birmingham forecast office.

Trump has defended his tweet about Alabama, and he displayed an altered forecast map in the Oval Office last week in an attempt to make his point. Apparently siding with the president, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued an unsigned statement critical of the Birmingham forecasters Friday.

But Alabama had never been included in hurricane advisories and Trump's information, based on less authoritative computer models than an official forecast, was outdated when he sent a tweet saying Alabama could be affected by Dorian.

Discussing the flurry of social media contacts and phone calls that followed Trump's tweet, Uccellini said Birmingham forecasters used "an emphasis they deemed essential to shut down what they thought were rumors" when they posted on social media that Alabama's wasn't at risk.

"Only later, when the retweets and politically based comments started coming to their office, did they learn the sources of this information," he said.
