Yahoo News/YouGov poll shows two-thirds of voters want the Senate to call new impeachment witnesses Jan 22nd 2020 7:11PM
Nearly two-thirds of registered voters (63 percent) agree with Democrats that the Senate should call new witnesses to testify during President Trump’s impeachment trial, according to a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll. Only 26 percent of voters disagree.
Conducted on Jan. 21 and 22 as the Senate trial was getting underway, the poll suggests that broad majorities of Americans side with Democrats in the pitched partisan battle over whether new witnesses should be allowed to testify or whether they should be blocked, as Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has maintained.
In the survey, 85 percent of Democrats and 53 percent of independents said the Senate should call new witnesses. Among Republicans surveyed, 43 percent said the Senate should not call new witnesses, while 35 percent said witnesses should be called and 22 percent indicated they were unsure on the question.
When asked about specific possible witnesses, majorities of voters said they wanted to hear from each of the four Trump allies Democrats have formally identified. Sixty percent of voters said they wanted to hear from Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani; 57 percent said they wanted to hear from Trump’s secretary of state, Mike Pompeo; 53 percent said they wanted to hear from Trump’s former national security adviser, John Bolton; and 50 percent said they wanted to hear from Trump’s acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney. In each case, only about a quarter of voters said they did not want to hear from these figures. Both Giuliani and Bolton have said they would testify if summoned or subpoenaed.
Registered voters were slightly less interested in Giuliani’s Ukraine fixer Lev Parnas, but a plurality (47 percent) still said they wanted to hear from him.

Start Your Free Trial The average unemployment rate nearly three years into President Trump's administration is 3.9 percent -- a 50-year low. The next best employment statistic was recorded during President George W. Bush's first term at 5.5 percent.
That statistic coupled with the fact that the wages of American workers are rising for the first time in years presents a challenge for Democrats in the 2020 election, according to the "Deep Dive" panel.
"Workers' wages have lately been rising faster than the salaries of their bosses. It pretty much knocks out the inequality argument. ... It appears the Trump era has been reducing [income inequality]," said James Freeman, the assistant editor of The Wall Street Journal's editorial page.
"The first time it happened was September 2018," added Fox Business host Charles Payne, remarking on this dynamic between workers' and supervisors' wages. "And it's happened every single month, except one, were blue-collar workers', not supervisory workers', wages have grown faster than their supervisors'. It's amazing."
"There needs to be, I think, a new Democratic economic message," continued Freeman. "They're basically giving the same talking points from 2015 and 2016, when we talk about the average person's wages are stagnating and the middle class doesn't have the same opportunity."

Schiff Likely Mischaracterized Parnas Evidence During Impeachment Trial
JANUARY 22, 2020 By Tristan Justice
In a letter to House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler of New York, lead House impeachment manager Rep. Adam Schiff likely mischaracterized evidence from former Rudy Giuliani associate Lev Parnas.
Schiff, who chairs the House Intelligence Committee, sent a letter to Nadler last week summarizing evidence put forward by Parnas, who has been indicted for fraud, claiming that Parnas “continued to try to arrange a meeting with President Zelensky.” The text message from Parnas to Giuliani reads “trying to get us Mr. Z…” with the rest of the text contained in Schiff’s letter redacted.
Documents reviewed by Politico show that “Mr. Z,” however, probably referred to Mykola Zlochevsky, the founder the Ukrainian energy company Burisma, on whose board Hunter Biden once served while raking in $50,000 a month despite no prior experience in the industry.
Politico reports that “an unredacted version of the exchange shows that several days later, Parnas sent Giuliani a word document that appears to show notes from an interview with Mykola Zlochevsky… followed by a text message to Giuliani that states ‘mr Z answers my brother.’” Therefore, Parnas was likely referring to Zlechevsky, not Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in the exchange.
The newspaper reports that the reviewed documents fail to explicitly state who is asking and answering questions but that the conversation focused on Burisma’s hiring practices, featuring statements such as “we also thought it would help in Ukraine to have strong international board figures,” further indicating that Zlochevsky was the subject of the exchange and not Zelensky.
