While noting the sample size of 3,000 people and other limitations of the survey, Cuomo said the implied fatality rate of 0.5 percent of those infected by COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the virus, was lower than some experts feared.
“If the infection rate is 13.9 percent, then it changes the theories of what the death rate is if you get infected,” Cuomo told a daily briefing.
I am not sure any credible statisticians, medical experts, or anyone really paying attention believes that we are getting an accurate death rate by simply dividing known confirmed deaths by known confirmed cases. So I wouldn't necessarily agree that it actually "changes the theories" about how deadly Covid-19 actually is.
So far we have two studies out of California which show higher infection rates and a death rate around 0.3% in those areas of California. We also have data collection showing that pregnant women who are tested are coming back with an approximate 15% rate of infection which would push the death rate down to around 0.1% nationally. Now this New York study is also concluding that many more people than confirmed are infected and that the death rates are likely more in line with other winter viruses, rather than in line with some sort of black plague.
If you add into the mix the extremely high disparity between the death rates of younger and older Americans, at the end of the day this virus will likely be much less deadly for a large share of the population than most viruses we catch. Whether we ever use this information to judge our responses to the crisis in the same manner that we judge most other things (in hindsight) is a different question all together.

I’m not here to argue that it was malfeasance or ignorance — both are unacceptable. But the one thing that Governor Andrew Cuomo’s stunning announcement made clear on Thursday is that there are some pretty shocking — and what should be — reassuring truths.
Cuomo announced that antibody testing in New York state, which only began four days previous, was already demonstrating that at minimum 13.9% of New Yorkers, had COVID-19 late stage antibodies.
The implication of this is a shockwave to the system.
With a population of 19,540,500 the findings point out that over 2,500,000 New Yorkers had the virus and have recovered. Keep in mind that as of this writing that only 263,000 New Yorkers have currently confirmed cases. Also as of this writing New York has reported 19,543 fatalities.
We’ve been told that the true death rate is 7.4% in New York. We were told there would be hundreds of thousands dead. We were told that this was worse than the flu, which has still recorded more deaths to date in this past flu season—even though the CDC instructed medical personnel to start counting influenza, heart disease, pulmonary, respiratory, drug overdose, and possibly even car crash deaths as COVID-19 deaths.

Experts rip Trump's idea of injecting disinfectant to treat COVID-19
Lysol manufacturer warns against internal use of disinfectant after Trump comments. A spokesperson for the cleaning product company said it had a responsibility to give accurate info to the public and warns that it is not safe to treat coronavirus with disinfectant.
WASHINGTON — The manufacturer of Lysol, a disinfectant spray and cleaning product, and the EPA both issued statements warning against any internal use after President Donald Trump suggested that people could get an "injection" of "the disinfectant that knocks (coronavirus) out in a minute."
"As a global leader in health and hygiene products, we must be clear that under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body (through injection, ingestion or any other route)," said a spokesperson for Reckitt Benckiser, the United Kingdom-based owner of Lysol, in a statement to NBC News.
"As with all products, our disinfectant and hygiene products should only be used as intended and in line with usage guidelines. Please read the label and safety information," the statement continued, adding that the company believes it has a "responsibility in providing consumers with access to accurate, up-to-date information as advised by leading public health experts."
The Environmental Protection Agency also is reminding people to only use disinfectant on surfaces.
The EPA said, "Never apply the product to yourself or others. Do not ingest disinfectant products."
William Bryan of the Department of Homeland Security said at a White House briefing on Thursday that "emerging results" from new research suggest solar light has a powerful effect in killing the virus on surfaces and in the air.
But he said there was no consideration of internal use of disinfectants.
At the briefing, Trump also suggested that people could be treated with "ultraviolet or just a very powerful light" to kill the virus after Bryan's presentation showed that the virus might not live as long in warmer and more humid temperatures.
Trump then also mentioned an "injection" of "disinfectant" to deter the virus.
"I see the disinfectant that knocks it out in a minute, one minute," the president said. "And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning? As you see, it gets in the lungs, it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that."
Trump did not specify the kind of disinfectant.
Medical professionals were quick to dispute Trump's claims as "irresponsible" and "dangerous."
“This notion of injecting or ingesting any type of cleansing product into the body is irresponsible and it’s dangerous," said Dr. Vin Gupta, a pulmonologist, global health policy expert and an NBC News and MSNBC contributor.
"It’s a common method that people utilize when they want to kill themselves," Gupta added.
