Credibility!

Listen to the experts!

  • In Jan/Feb the experts told us that Covid was nothing to worry about. We believed them.
  • In early March the experts told us that Covid might be a thing, but to go about our lives. We believed them.
  • By mid-March the experts told us that Covid was a deadly killer, highly contagious, and that the death rate might be as high as 5%. We believed them.
  • By late March, the experts suggested that we close down economies for upwards of two weeks in order to flatten the curve. We believed them and complied.
  • In late March, the experts told us the using masks was not helpful for everyday use and that only medical personnel should be wearing them. We believed them.
  • In late March, the experts said that upwards of 250,000 Americans would die and that extreme isolation measures were necessary. We believe them.
  • In late March, the experts warned that we would need tens of thousands of Ventilators as well as more hospital beds. We believed them.
  • In early April the experts told that we couldn't reopen the economy until the rate of infections started to go down. We believed them and complied.
  • By mid April the experts told us that we had done a wonderful job mitigating the rate of the infection and the models now showed that around 60,000 Americans would die. They told us that things might be totally under control by Memorial day. We believed them.
  • By mid April the experts provided a three phase plan for reopening the economy. We were told that this could be started as soon as states reached a 14 day threshold of cases coming down. We believed them.
  • By late April the experts told us to start wearing masks to help with the spread of Covid, after previously telling us they wouldn't help. At least some believed them.
  • By mid May the experts told us that 60,000 deaths would likely be more like 120,000 (or double the 60,000 previously predicted).
  • By late May some experts told us that the rate of death might be around 1% rather than 5%.
  • By late May other experts told us that the rate of death might be around 0.25% rather than 1% or 5%.
  • By early June the experts put us at 90,000 deaths according to models.
  • In early June, the experts told us that large gathering protesting the death of George Floyd were medically important. But suggested that other smaller gatherings were not. Almost nobody believed them.
  • By mid June, the expert models told us that we would now see 200,000 deaths by Oct 1st.
  • By early July, the same models showed it would be 175,000 deaths.
  • A week later, the same models showed it would be 210,000 deaths.
  • Now the experts are telling us that we might need to shut down the entire economy back down if the number of new cases don't start to decrease?

Excuse us if some Americans no longer believe you.

For example, White House officials pointed to a statement by Dr. Fauci in a Feb. 29 interview that “at this moment, there is no need to change anything that you’re doing on a day-by-day basis.” But they omitted a warning he delivered right after.

“Right now the risk is still low, but this could change,” he said in the interview, conducted by NBC News. “When you start to see community spread, this could change and force you to become much more attentive to doing things that would protect you from spread.”

In the same interview, Dr. Fauci also warned that the coronavirus could become “a major outbreak.”

The list of statements, laid out in the style of a campaign’s opposition research document, was later released to several news outlets. It was an extraordinary move for the White House to provide news organizations with such a document about a health official who works for the administration and retains a high level of public trust.

I don't know what "mistake" Cali is blathering about. I printed out in full an article which, if it does not indicate that three teachers caught Covid from the children they were in charge of, I don't know how that could be made any clearer.

The American people trust Dr. Fauci far, far more than they trust those others who temper their statements to try to make them at least a little more pleasing to Herr Trump.

WASHINGTON — Federal materials for reopening schools, shared the week President Trump demanded weaker guidelines to do so, said fully reopening schools and universities remained the “highest risk” for the spread of the coronavirus.

The 69-page document, obtained by The New York Times and marked “For Internal Use Only,” was intended for federal public health response teams to have as they are deployed to hot spots around the country. But it appears to have circulated the same week that Vice President Mike Pence announced that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would release new guidelines, saying that the administration did not want them to be “too tough.” It is unclear whether Mr. Trump saw the document, nor is it clear how much of it will survive once new guidance is completed.

(The cover page of the document is dated July 8, 2019, an obvious typographical error since the novel coronavirus did not exist then.)

What is clear is that federal health experts are using a road map that is vastly different from what Mr. Trump wanted.

While the president blamed Fauci for mixed messages on the need for Americans to wear masks, other top administration officials, including Surgeon General Jerome Adams, have likewise offered conflicting recommendations to the public on the effectiveness of masks in protecting against the coronavirus. Adams, who in March said "masks do not work for the general public," said in an interview with "Face the Nation on Sunday that the Trump administration is "trying to correct" its earlier messaging on masks and face coverings and acknowledged it's "very hard to do." Adams wore a mask during the interview, which was conducted remotely.

The rosy picture of the coronavirus crisis painted by the president stands in sharp contrast to the blunt warnings issued by Fauci in recent weeks.

Fauci, who has served under six presidents, told FiveThirtyEight's podcast in an interview that "when you compare us to other countries, I don't think you can say we're doing great. I mean, we're just not."

He also refuted Mr. Trump's assertion that the declining mortality rate indicates success in controlling the coronavirus, saying in an event on Facebook Live with Senator Doug Jones, a Democrat from Alabama, that "it's a false narrative to take comfort in a lower death rate."

"There's so many other things that are very dangerous and bad about this virus," Fauci said. "Don't get yourself into false complacency."

Fauci was incorrect in some of his assessments, including on the importance of wearing masks. But he has also been quick to correct himself, and his statements reflect the scientific facts currently available. The same can’t be said for Trump, who has, among other things, suggested coronavirus would miraculously disappear by April and could possibly be treated with an injection of disinfectant or powerful light.

i'm old enough to remember when the casino sham was sold as the key to economic development, to our budget woes, and as a cure for the heartbreak of psoriasis in NY.

the Cuomo Virus fucked that up all to hell...

“More than 1,000 Rivers team members have been furloughed after salaries and wages were retained for four weeks following the March 15th temporary closure of the property in order to help stop the spread of COVID-19,” said the notice.

“It is uncertain how long the furloughs will continue and how many furloughs may unfortunately become permanent layoffs,” it went on.

“The casino has developed a comprehensive reopening plan that addresses crowd management, cleanliness, air quality and circulation, monitoring, isolation, and social distancing to provide the safest environment possible. Our guests and team members’ safety is our highest priority. Rivers Casino would like to reopen as soon as the State permits.”

It is unclear when casinos in New York will be allowed to reopen. New York's non-Native American-operate casinos have been closed since shortly after the coronavirus hit the U.S. in March. The Oneida Indian Nation’s Turning Stone casino, along with two others in Central New York, reopened last month.

Gregorich [the superintendent of the school] reiterated [that] the three teachers were careful and still got Covid-19.

“I think that’s really the message or the concern that our staff has is we can’t even keep our staff safe by themselves … how are we going to keep 20 kids in a classroom safe?
I just don’t see how that’s possible to do that,” he said.

Byrd said reopening schools will put people in their small community at risk and he does not want to see other families go through a similar experience.

“Many grandparents wind up being caretakers to kids when they get off school — mom and dad are working and a lot of grandparents are even raising their grandchildren. So, many of these grandparents fall into this high-risk category of being older with more health issues,”
he said.

“They have no business opening the schools to try and get back to a traditional classroom … let’s get through this pandemic first before we try to get back to normal.”

“In my life, I have watched John Kennedy talk on television about missiles in Cuba. I saw Lyndon Johnson look Richard Russell squarely in the eye and say, "And we shall overcome." I saw Richard Nixon resign and Gerald Ford tell the Congress that our long national nightmare was over. I saw Jimmy Carter talk about malaise and Ronald Reagan talk about a shining city on a hill. I saw George H.W. Bush deliver the eulogy for the Soviet bloc, and Bill Clinton comfort the survivors of Timothy McVeigh's madness in Oklahoma City. I saw George W. Bush struggle to make sense of it all on September 11, 2001, and I saw Barack Obama sing 'Amazing Grace' in the wounded sanctuary of Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

"These were the presidents of my lifetime. These were not perfect men. They were not perfect presidents, god knows. Not one of them was that. But they approached the job, and they took to the podium, with all the gravitas they could muster as appropriate to the job. They tried, at least, to reach for something in the presidency that was beyond their grasp as ordinary human beings. They were not all ennobled by the attempt, but they tried nonetheless.

"And comes now this hopeless, vicious buffoon, and the audience of equally hopeless and vicious buffoons who laughed and cheered when he made sport of a woman whose lasting memory of the trauma she suffered is the laughter of the perpetrators. Now he comes, a man swathed in scandal, with no interest beyond what he can put in his pocket and what he can put over on a universe of suckers, and he does something like this while occupying an office that we gave him, and while endowed with a public trust that he dishonors every day he wakes up in the White House.

"The scion of a multigenerational criminal enterprise, the parameters of which we are only now beginning to comprehend. A vessel for all the worst elements of the American condition. And a cheap, soulless bully besides. We never have had such a cheap counterfeit of a president* as currently occupies the office. We never have had a president* so completely deserving of scorn and yet so small in the office that it almost seems a waste of time and energy to summon up the requisite contempt.

"Watch how a republic dies in the empty eyes of an empty man who feels nothing but his own imaginary greatness, and who cannot find in himself the decency simply to shut up even when it is in his best interest to do so. Presidents don't have to be heroes to be good presidents. They just have to realize that their humanity is our common humanity, and that their political commonwealth is our political commonwealth, too. Watch him behind the seal of the President of the United States. Isn't he a funny man? Isn't what happened to that lady hilarious? Watch the assembled morons cheer. This is the only story now."

The tweet was likely a reference to an interview Fauci did in April with CNN in which he said certificates of immunity were being discussed as a potential possibility. Immunity certificates or cards were being discussed at the time as a way to speed reopening, but in the months since the idea has lost prominence as scientists struggle to understand how immunity to COVID-19 works and amid lagging testing capabilities in the United States.

Trump has but one agenda and that is to get reelected.

To most people, that’s patently obvious. The premature state reopenings Trump encouraged have led to a surge in cases, bringing hospital systems in hotspots to the brink and portending a coming spike in deaths. Florida, the current American epicenter, shattered the single-day record for confirmed cases on Sunday, reporting a stunning 15,000 new cases in just 24 hours. To put that number in perspective, the number of new cases the Sunshine State recorded just Sunday is more than the entire nation of South Korea has confirmed during the pandemic in total. There’s no indication that the dangerous trajectory will change anytime soon; as Florida reported more than 25,000 new infections over the weekend, Disney World reopened to the public and Trump-allied Governor Ron DeSantis tried to spin the numbers into a positive, with his communications director cheering a decline in the positive-test rate and the relatively young median age of those testing positive.

Meanwhile, nations that followed the science have managed to beat back the virus, paving the way for a potentially safer return to some semblance of normalcy. If Trump, like Fauci, were capable of admitting his mistakes, perhaps he would see that following expert guidance—a New York Times poll last month found that an overwhelming majority of Americans trust Fauci and other medical experts over Trump—rather than pretending the crisis isn’t happening could even help him politically. But even with a blueprint in front of him, Trump just can’t bring himself to back down. Instead, he’s sidelining his best source of information in favor of the guy who hosted Love Connection. On Monday morning, Trump retweeted a conspiracy put forth by Chuck Woolery contending that “everyone is lying” about the threat of COVID-19 to dim Trump’s electoral prospects.

They analyzed a group of 47 infected children between ages 1 and 11. Fifteen of them had an underlying condition or were hospitalized, but the remaining were mostly free of symptoms. The children who were asymptomatic had viral loads that were just as high or higher than the symptomatic children or adults.

“In this cloud of children, there are these few children that have a virus concentration that is sky-high,” Dr. Drosten said.

He noted that there is a significant body of work suggesting that a person’s viral load tracks closely with their infectiousness. “So I’m a bit reluctant to happily recommend to politicians that we can now reopen day cares and schools.”

While McCarthy would become the model for all the demagogues who came after, from George Wallace to David Duke, his most apt student was Donald Trump. Attorney and kingmaker Roy Cohn was the flesh-and-blood through-line connecting the senator to the president. An aging Cohn taught the fledgling Trump the transcendent lessons he had learned from his onetime master, McCarthy — how to smear opponents and contrive grand conspiracies.

Trump shared even more with his mentor’s mentor. Trump and McCarthy both were geniuses at seizing upon public fears and rifts, faking evidence to support their assertions, and claiming vindication when there was none. Each was a master at grabbing the spotlights of his day — McCarthy via newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, radio and TV; Trump on Twitter, reality TV, cable news, tabloid and supermarket papers and mass-market books. Both made their names into ubiquitous brands. Neither had a master plan other than accumulating and holding on to power. Both shocked the world and themselves by rising as fast and far as they did.

Trump is a dream come true for those who, for more than 60 years, have hungered to resurrect McCarthy and McCarthyism.

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—In a stunning repudiation of the nation’s leading infectious-disease expert, Donald J. Trump has replaced Dr. Anthony Fauci with the veteran game-show host Chuck Woolery.

Appearing at the White House with his newest Coronavirus Task Force member, Trump said that he chose Woolery because he has “a much better record of success than Tony.”

“Tony Fauci is a nice guy, but he’s been wrong a lot,” Trump said. “Chuck has made thousands of love connections that turned out a hundred-per-cent right.”

Woolery said that his first official act as part of the Coronavirus Task Force would be to eliminate social distancing, calling the practice “ridiculous.”

“How are you supposed to go on a date and stay six feet apart?” Woolery asked. “If we had social distancing on ‘Love Connection,’ we wouldn’t have lasted a single episode.”

He also previewed his approach to clinical trials for potential coronavirus vaccines. “We’ll inject each contestant with three vaccines and see which one he’s most compatible with,” he said. “The audience is gonna eat that up.”

Scott A**hole I have a few questions for you:

• If a teacher tests positive for COVID-19 are they required to quarantine for 2-3 weeks? Is their sick leave covered, paid?

• If that teacher has 5 classes a day with 30 students each, do all 150 of those students need to then stay home and quarantine for 14 days?

• Do all 150 of those students now have to get tested? Who pays for those tests? Are they happening at school? How are the parents being notified? Does everyone in each of those kids' families need to get tested? Who pays for that?

• What if someone who lives in the same house as a teacher tests positive? Does that teacher now need to take 14 days off of work to quarantine? Is that time off covered? Paid?

• Where are they going to find a substitute teacher who will work in a classroom full of exposed, possibly infected students for substitute pay?

• Substitutes teach in multiple schools. What if they are diagnosed with COVID-19? Do all the kids in each school now have to quarantine and get tested? Who is going to pay for that?

• What if a student in your kid's class tests positive? What if your kid tests positive? Does every other student and teacher they have been around quarantine? Do we all get notified who is infected and when? Or because of HIPAA regulations are parents and teachers just going to get mysterious “may have been in contact” emails all year long?

• What is this stress going to do to our teachers? How does it affect their health and well-being? How does it affect their ability to teach? How does it affect the quality of education they are able to provide? What is it going to do to our kids? What are the long-term effects of consistently being stressed out?

• How will it affect students and faculty when the first teacher in their school dies from this? The first parent of a student who brought it home? The first kid?

• How many more people are going to die, that otherwise would not have if we had stayed home longer? 30% of the teachers in the US are over 50. About 16% of the total deaths in the US are people between the ages of 45-65. We are choosing to put our teachers in danger. We're not paying them more.

We aren't spending anywhere near the right amount to protect them. And in turn, we are putting ourselves and our kids in danger.

Looks Like Sweden Was Right After All

“Sweden’s health minister understood that the only chance to beat COVID-19 was to get the Swedish population to a Herd Immunity Threshold against COVID-19, and that’s exactly what they have done…

The Herd Immunity Threshold (“HIT”) for COVID-19 is between 10-20%

This fact gets less press than any other. Most people understand the basic concept of herd immunity and the math behind it. In the early days, some public health officials speculated that COVID-19’s HIT was 70%. Obviously, the difference between a HIT of 70% and a HIT of 10-20% is dramatic, and the lower the HIT, the quicker a virus will burn out as it loses the ability to infect more people, which is exactly what COVID-19 is doing everywhere, including the U.S, which is why the death curve above looks the way it looks.

Scientists from Oxford, Virginia Tech, and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, all recently explained the HIT of COVID-19 in this paper:

We searched the literature for estimates of individual variation in propensity to acquire or transmit COVID-19 or other infectious diseases and overlaid the findings as vertical lines in Figure 3. Most CV estimates are comprised between 2 and 4, a range where naturally acquired immunity to SARS-CoV-2 may place populations over the herd immunity threshold once as few as 10-20% of its individuals are immune….

Naturally acquired herd immunity to COVID-19 combined with earnest protection of the vulnerable elderly – especially nursing home and assisted living facility residents — is an eminently reasonable and practical alternative to the dubious panacea of mass compulsory vaccination against the virus.

This strategy was successfully implemented in Malmo, Sweden, which had few COVID-19 deaths by assiduously protecting its elder care homes, while “schools remained open, residents carried on drinking in bars and cafes, and the doors of hairdressers and gyms were open throughout.

One of the most vocal members of the scientific community discussing COVID-19’s HIT is Stanford’s Nobel-laureate Dr. Michael Levitt. Back on May 4, he gave this great interview to the Stanford Daily where he advocated for Sweden’s approach of letting COVID-19 spread naturally through the community until you arrive at HIT. He stated:

If Sweden stops at about 5,000 or 6,000 deaths, we will know that they’ve reached herd immunity, and we didn’t need to do any kind of lockdown. My own feeling is that it will probably stop because of herd immunity. COVID is serious, it’s at least a serious flu. But it’s not going to destroy humanity as people thought.

Guess what? That’s exactly what happened. As of today, 7 weeks after his prediction, Sweden has 5,550 deaths. In this graph, you can see that deaths in Sweden PEAKED when the HIT was halfway to its peak (roughly 7.3%) and by the time the virus hit 14% it was nearly extinguished.” (“Second wave? Not even close“, JB Handley, The Off-Guardian)

About 5.4 million Americans lost health insurance in the pandemic, more than have ever lost coverage through job losses in a year, an analysis found.

The study, to be released Tuesday by the nonpartisan consumer advocacy group Families U.S.A., found that the estimated increase in uninsured laid-off workers over the three-month period was nearly 40 percent higher than the highest previous increase, which occurred during the recession of 2008 and 2009, when 3.9 million adults lost insurance.

Former Vice President Joe Biden's presidential campaign on Monday slammed the Trump administration's recent attacks on the nation's top infectious disease expert, Anthony Fauci, as "disgusting" on Monday.

"Over 135,000 Americans have lost their lives and tens of millions have lost their jobs because Donald Trump spent the last six months disastrously mismanaging the worst public health crisis in a century, the whole time failing to heed the warnings and guidance of medical experts -- particularly Dr. Fauci," Biden campaign spokesman Andrew Bates said in a statement to reporters.

"Infections in the United States have skyrocketed, surpassing every other country in the world by far, specifically because of Trump's refusal to listen to science," Bates continued. "The president's disgusting attempt to pass the buck by blaming the top infectious disease expert in the country -- whose advice he repeatedly ignored and Joe Biden consistently implored him to take -- is yet another horrible and revealing failure of leadership as the tragic death toll continues to needlessly grow."

Tensions between the White House and Fauci have risen in recent days, with Fauci's advice often contradicting the president's views on the pandemic.

Over the weekend, a White House official sent media outlets a long list of "mistakes" they said Fauci had made during the pandemic, including his comment in March that people didn't need to wear masks.

Meanwhile, the White House's deputy chief of staff for communications, Dan Scavino, shared a cartoon on Facebook on Sunday depicting Fauci as a faucet flushing the U.S. economy down the drain due to his health guidance on the pandemic.

However, President Trump maintained he had a "very good relationship" with Fauci on Monday.

"I have a very good relationship with Dr. Fauci. I’ve had for a long time, right from the beginning," Trump told reporters. "I find him to be a very nice person. I don’t always agree with him."

"I get along with him very well. I like him, personally," he added.

U.S. District Court Judge Emmet G. Sullivan, who had the case of former national security adviser Michael Flynn yanked out of his hands by a federal appeals court panel, is not through fighting. On Thursday, Sullivan's lawyers asked the full U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to rehear the case and reconsider the ruling of the three-judge panel. (On Friday the court stayed the panel's order pending consideration of Sullivan's petition.)

It's vital that the full appeals court accede to Sullivan's request, even if the ultimate result is that Sullivan accepts a motion by the Justice Department that he dismiss the charge that Flynn lied to the FBI about his conversations with Russia's ambassador during the presidential transition. Flynn pleaded guilty in 2017, but later moved to withdraw his plea.

President Trump on Monday again sought to redirect blame for his coronavirus response to the Obama administration.

Trump, who has repeatedly claimed that increased testing has led to a spike in U.S. COVID-19 cases, was asked by a reporter at the White House whether he was concerned about a resurgence of the virus that has killed more than 135,000 Americans and infected more than 3.3 million.

“We have one of the lowest mortality rates anywhere,” the president said before pivoting to an attack on Barack Obama and Joe Biden, the presumptive 2020 Democratic nominee.

“Biden and Obama stopped their testing,” Trump said. “They just stopped it. You probably know that. I’m sure you don’t want to report it. But they stopped testing. Right in the middle, they just went, ‘No more testing.’”

It’s not entirely clear what Obama-era testing program Trump was referring to. He has previously criticized the Obama administration over its handling of the 2009 H1N1 flu outbreak, which killed about 12,500 Americans. (On Monday he acknowledged that the so-called swine flu was “a much lesser problem than the one we're having.”)

But it’s not the first time Trump has tried to place blame on Obama and Biden for his halting response to the coronavirus, which originated in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 — nearly three years after they left office.

At a briefing of the coronavirus task force in early March, Trump also invoked his predecessor.

“The Obama administration made a decision on testing that turned out to be very detrimental to what we’re doing,” Trump said. “And we undid that decision a few days ago so that the testing can take place in a much more accurate and rapid fashion.”

According to the Annenberg Public Policy Center’s FactCheck.org, no such rule or regulation was ever implemented under the previous administration.

“The Obama administration did attempt to impose a risk-based system of regulation on laboratory developed tests, or LDTs, and introduced draft guidance in 2014,” FactCheck.org said. “But that guidance was never finalized, and was withdrawn after Trump won the election in 2016.

“There is no formal document that Trump needed to rescind to allow labs to create their own coronavirus tests,” it added.

In late March, Trump claimed that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “inherited a broken test.”

“When CDC first looked at their test, the biggest problem they had is, the test didn’t work,” he said. “That wasn’t from us. That’s been there a long time. Now we have the best tests in the world.”

Politifact’s “Truth-o-Meter” gave the claim a “Pants on Fire” rating.

When the U.S. government began sending test kits out on Feb. 5, the fact-checking site noted, “there was no inherited test because a test couldn’t be created until the new virus had emerged.”

President Trump has repeatedly pressured the Department of Justice and the FBI to investigate and prosecute political adversaries like Hillary Clinton; now, the DOJ has reopened the Clinton email investigation in an attempt to scandalize his opponents.
This is not based in concerns with national security, law enforcement, or any other function of his office—it is an attempted power play, plain and simple.
Trump also pressured the Ukrainian government to investigate Joe Biden, his potential opponent in the general election, by leveraging US military aide to help his reelection prospects.
Trump and Attorney General Barr have asked foreign intelligence agencies to assist in an investigation to discredit Robert Mueller, hoping to undermine the credibility of the damning Mueller Report.
There’s no question that these actions constitute an outrageous and inappropriate abuse of executive branch powers and serve as clear grounds for impeachment.

Donald Trump knew disclosure of his extramarital affairs with Stephanie Clifford (A.K.A. Stormy Daniels) and Karen McDougal could hurt his chances at winning the 2016 election.
At the direction of Trump, Michael Cohen and American Media, Inc. (AMI), the publisher of the National Enquirer bought the rights to the women’s stories and forced them to sign Non-Disclosure Agreements to prevent them from going public for the purpose of protecting his campaign.
Cohen admitted to making illegal, hush-money payments to hide Trump’s affairs in the fall of 2016, just weeks before the election.
Federal prosecutors, and Trump’s co-conspirators Cohen and AMI, all say that Cohen made the payments at Trump’s direction, “in concert with the campaign,” and with the intention of helping Trump win.
Trump made illegal reimbursements to Michael Cohen for this crime while President, discussing the illegal scheme while in the Oval Office.
Trump is an unindicted co-conspirator because he directed Cohen to “cause an unlawful corporate contribution” and an “excessive campaign contribution” by paying the two women hush money with the intent to influence the election.

Meanwhile, the president is failing according to both requirements of public trust. Trump is not making judgments based on the best available information. And he clearly has political goals that compete with (and often override) his commitment to public health. The president is hoping against hope that the public will forget about the virus until November, or at least about the federal role in fighting it. To apply a veneer of normalcy, he is holding public events that endanger his staff and his audience and is planning a Republican convention that will double as a petri dish.

[We are interested in hearing about how the struggle to reopen amid the pandemic is affecting people's lives. Please tell us yours.]

It now seems likely that the most decisive moment of the American pandemic took place in mid-April when new cases began to stabilize around 25,000 a day. Even four or six more weeks of firm presidential leadership — urging the tough, sacrificial application of stay-at-home orders — might have reduced the burden of disease to more sustainable levels, as happened in Western Europe. And this would have relieved stress on systems of testing, tracing and treatment.

But Trump’s nerve failed him. Instead of holding firm, he began siding with populist demands for immediate opening, pressuring governors to take precipitous steps and encouraging skepticism about basic public health information and measures. This may well have been the defining moment of the Trump presidency. And he was weak, weak, weak.

It is typical for Trump to shift blame. But in this case, the president has selected his fall guy poorly. Fauci has been an example of conscience and courage in an administration that values neither. When Trump encourages a contrast to his own selfishness and cravenness, he only damages himself.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Gov. of New York had a tremendous challenge with large numbers of cases and deaths from overseas flights, but required shut downs and distancing and mandated mask wearing and so he has successfully beaten back the tide.

Govs. of Texas and Florida listened to Trump and never shut down enough or required mask wearing and tried to open up too soon against Fauci's advice and now are experiencing terrible surges beyond their control.

According to me.

New York City sees uptick in coronavirus cases among young adults

By ERIN DURKIN

07/13/2020 01:05 PM EDT

NEW YORK — The city has seen a jump in coronavirus infections among young adults as it tries to stave off a new surge in the virus that is hitting new heights in much of the country.

The infection rate has increased especially among New Yorkers in their 20s since mid-June, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday. There has been a smaller uptick among people in their 30s as well."

Kansas Dimwit and rrb are just SO upset because New York recently had a day of NO reported cases, so very different from the horrible increases now taking place in, for example, Florida, where the Republican governor put playing Trumpian politics over the welfare of his people.

There are increases coming now in all the states, even those that practiced more aggressive forms of shut down, and that should concern us all. But the answer is not to pretend that it's all just going to go away, as Trump has again recently predicted, the dunce.

Trump is losing his attempt to claim that he has handled the pandemic well.
It is obvious that he has repeatedly responded poorly, even miserably, putting his hopes for reelection above the welfare of our populace.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Some tell me they are weary of hearing about Trump’s abuses and they no longer are surprised by his outrages du jour. I share their weariness — I feel as though I’ve been a coroner working one car wreck after another for five years — but we can’t afford to look away until he is dispatched so overwhelmingly that his inevitable attempt to declare the election stolen won’t fly. Our very survival depends on it.

Ex-CDC Heads Say Trump Is Politicizing Science

Four former CDC directors write in the Washington Post:

“One of the many contributions the CDC provides our country is sound public health guidance that states and communities can adapt to their local context — expertise even more essential during a pandemic, when uncertainty is the norm. The four of us led the CDC over a period of more than 15 years, spanning Republican and Democratic administrations alike. We cannot recall over our collective tenure a single time when political pressure led to a change in the interpretation of scientific evidence.”

UNTIL NOW.

“Biden and Obama stopped their testing,” Trump said. “They just stopped it. You probably know that. I’m sure you don’t want to report it. But they stopped testing. Right in the middle, they just went, ‘No more testing.’

The failure of current testing is obama's fault????? So sad the idiots of the right are more concerned about the success of NY and not the failure of Floriduh or Texas!!!!!!!

Nobody said there was no cases in Florida and Texas. So you can look up the numbers yourself.

The good news for Florida is the infection rate trending downward after it peaked last week. And the death an hospitalization rates remain flat.

This means we now have more effective treatments to mitigate the worse most life-threatening symptoms of COVID-19.

"experts" also warned of 2.5 MILLION deaths globally, while fuking some cuckolds wife and infecting the cuckold with covid by proxy.

"expert" Fauci told us in January the virus was no big deal.

"experts" told us to lock down for only 2 weeks to flatten the curve, and then we'd be back to normal.

"experts" in NY sent 10,000 seniors to their death in nursing homes. Dr. Mengele himself would be proud.

"experts" told us masks were not effective.

other "experts" told us to go to chinatown in NY & SF for chinese new year. and to go out to the theatre and restaurants.

"experts" at the lancet believed a bogus study on the lack of benefits of chloroquine.

expert after expert after expert have been telling us a whole host of "expert" things. modeled by "experts" on data collected by "experts" and analyzed by "experts" on the advice of "experts."

sane people stopped believing the "experts" a while ago.

CA’s spike in cases is as bad as Texas, even though their lockdown was longer

STATISTICS: https://twitter.com/MattWalshBlog/status/1283019702181212160
