BIDEN WON IT, HANDS DOWN.

Four More Years of This?
Karen Tumulty:
“The nightmare that played out Tuesday evening on a debate stage in Cleveland served at least one useful purpose. It encapsulated, in a single 98-minute span, the entire presidency of Donald J. Trump.

“All of the impulses that drive Trump were unleashed: The lying. The rage. The bluster. The incoherence.

“It is hard to imagine that anyone but the most obdurate of partisans could have watched the spectacle and thought, Gee, wouldn’t it be great to have four more years of this?”

‘Portland Sheriff’ Says He ‘Will Never’ Support Trump
President Trump claimed during last night’s debate that he secured the endorsement of the “Portland sheriff” — presumably a reference to Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese, the Oregonian reports.

However, Reese tweeted that was false: “In tonight’s presidential debate the President said the ‘Portland Sheriff’ supports him. As the Multnomah County Sheriff I have never supported Donald Trump and will never support him.”

‘Will You Just Shut Up, Man?’
Susan Glasser:
“What does the worst debate in American history look like? It looks like the debate that took place on Tuesday night between President Donald Trump and former Vice-President Joe Biden. It was a joke, a mess, a disaster. A ‘shit show,’ a ‘dumpster fire,’ a national humiliation. No matter how bad you thought the debate would be, it was worse. Way worse. Trump shouted, he bullied, he hectored, he lied, and he interrupted, over and over again.

“Remarkably enough, it was seemingly on purpose. Losing in the polls, and with the country stricken by a pandemic that has claimed two hundred thousand American lives, the President offered incoherent bluster, inflammatory racism, and personal attacks on his opponent’s son. But mostly what came through was Trump’s refusal to shut up. He talked and talked and talked. He talked over Biden. He talked over the moderator, Fox News’s Chris Wallace. He talked over Biden some more. How bad was it? The line that history is likely to record as among the most memorable was Biden’s lament, at the end of the debate’s very first segment: ‘Will you just shut up, man? This is so unpresidential.'”

Trump Still Can’t Make the Race About Biden
Jonathan Allen:
“Trump’s words and actions are those of a candidate who knows he is losing and has no idea how to fix the problem.”

“The irony is that Biden was deeply vulnerable: after decades of experience at the highest levels, he’s still not a strong debater. He was noticeably apprehensive; he lacked the motivation and speed to brawl on stage; and he still didn’t have good answers for a host of questions about his record and platform.

“But Trump couldn’t or wouldn’t stay focused on Biden’s actual positions. Instead, he ran against a dark caricature of the former vice president while the real version was standing right there smiling.”

Funny Reverend...

But you have yet to quote anyone who can provide any reason to vote for Biden (other than he is not Trump). Even in their criticisms of Trump your own quotes admit that Biden didn't make any real points during the debate and didn't provide any real good answers to many questions. He refused to even answer several questions, including whether or not he supports court packing and he still pretends that the protests and riots are not the fault of BLM and Antifa (and refuses to call out either).

Biden was completely overrun and made to look weak, frustrated, and out of sorts. He offered almost nothing of substance. It seems nobody can come up with a list of effective Biden arguments, good responses, or even preplanned zingers that made him look good.

Pretty much "everyone" agrees with this, even those most ardent Biden supporters.

The reality is that Trump steamrolled over Biden and as much as you can dominate someone with just a sense of a bigger presence, Trump did so.

Now the argument you (and some, but not all of your ilk) is making is that the manner in which Trump dominated was the problem. That the very fact that he spent the vast majority of the debate acting like an Alpha wolf trying to prove that the other wolves are weaker and should not replace him as Alpha was what made Biden the winner.

So let's be clear. One could argue that Trump put out a negative vibe that may or may not have turned off certain people... but there is literally no logical or realistic or tangible manner in which to say that Biden outdebated anyone last night. You actually have to make a point (not just be the loser of a drunken bar brawl that people feel sorry for) to claim victory. Biden made none.

How this plays out over time... well we forget about the details and remember the bigger picture. I don't believe there is any argument over what it will be. Just how that is perceived.

C.H. Truth said...

In other words Reverend...

Nobody "won" the debate last night. But the debate did either reinforce old gut feelings or create new gut feelings about the two candidates.

Trump proved that he is still a bully, unconventional, obnoxious, condescending, and if he is elected again will continue to be all that for another four years.

Biden didn't either live up to being either a "fighter" or "reassuring" as a non-chaotic alternative. He did a poor job "standing up" to Trump, but offered enough name-calling and combativeness to have forfeited the idea that he is some sort of calming influence.

So since most everyone is convinced that this race is Biden's to lose... I would offer that those convinced of the idea that Biden can simply ride the rapids to victory, then you might be happy about last night. You can (as most on left suggest) demand that at worst it was an ugly draw that doesn't move the needle. Or that Trump might have even "lost" because he was obnoxious. That's all he was hoping for... right?

If you are still not convinced that Biden has already won and still needs to offer people a good reason to "switch horses in midstream" then he did very little to convince anyone that he is the man for the job. I don't see how you argue that he helped himself (independent of the thinking that Trump hurt himself).

Trump for being a bully and obnoxious or Biden for taking the bait, but still managing to look fairly weak trying to fight back.

In the article I just referenced, Susan Crabtree mentions several moments when Biden looked very good.

You ask me for a list and I may eventually provide you with such a list, but first I will point out what I have said before and what some others have said:

Several of Biden's best moments came when he was looking right at the camera, at the American public, and showing concern for them, letting them know how much he cared and how he was going to put them first concerning the huge difficulties we are going through.

Trump, on the other hand, was always looking at either Biden or Wallace and being overly aggressive as he attacked Biden and extravagantly defended himself.

Big advantage for Biden, right there.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) told CNN that it was a “huge mistake” for President Trump not to condemn white supremacy during the first presidential debate.

Biden Hits New Spending Highs In Battleground States

“Joe Biden’s campaign has long had the TV and radio spending advantage over President Trump. But while Trump has increased his spending in a handful of key states, Biden’s campaign is hitting new, weekly spending highs across the map,” NBC News reports.

“The Biden campaign spent more in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin during the week spanning Sept. 22-28 than it had in those states in any previous week.

“The Trump campaign hit new, weekly spending highs in four states during the week of Sept. 22 — Florida, Georgia, Nevada and Pennsylvania. But even so, Team Trump still spent millions less than Biden in all but Georgia.”

The Reverend provided just another example of how the left feel that Biden won the debate based on how they might be perceived, not in terms of what was argued.

When someone suggests that Biden's best moments were when he "looked at the camera" they are not suggesting it was "what he said" but rather "how he acted". There was even a comparison about how Trump was interacting with Wallace and Biden vs the "camera".

The very idea of large debate moments is that they are obvious and memorable. People don't forget them. For great debate moments, we remember then for years. For the average everyday debate that has it's moments, we at least remember them the next morning.

The fact that the Reverend admits that he must go "back to the transcripts" is proof of what I say. There is nothing he remembers or can provide that Joe Biden said last night that resonated enough for him to just remember (without looking at his notes).

Al Gore might have wiped the floor with Bush and even won many of the debate polls, but what people remember was the constant sighing and it seemed to harm him in the polling afterwards.

Does Trump lose because he looked obnoxious and confrontational?
Does Biden lose because he looked weak and not in control?
Do they both lose and if so, who loses more?

C.H. Truth said...

Wallace loses the most... Not just wow he didn't keep control, but in the manner in which he asks spectacularly stupid quesitons. "He's Putin's puppy."

On Trump not requiring masks and distancing at his rallies: "He's been totally irresponsible ... He's a fool on this."

When favoring the wealthy through taxes, Biden said, "You're the worst president America has ever had."

On Trump's interruptions: "Will you just shut up, man?" "Will you just shush for a minute?" "It's hard to get any word in with this clown."

On Biden "destroying the suburbs": "He wouldn't know a suburb unless he took a wrong turn."

One of Biden's best moments came when Trump tried to criticize Hunter. Looking right at the camera, Biden said:
"This is not about our families. It's about YOUR family" (America's families)

Wallace asked Trump, "Are you willing, tonight, to condemn white supremacists and militia groups and say that they need to stand down and not add to the violence in a number of these cities, as we saw in Kenosha, and as we've seen in Portland?"

Trump responded, “Sure.”

So basically the Reverend points to a bunch of insults of Trump as the key moments of the Biden debate, which just clarifies that there were no real moments where Biden stood out as a matter of policy or anything tangible.

I thought I suggested that the Reverend come up with Key Biden moments that did not involve "Trump" - but that is probably just too much to ask for.

From my own standpoint, I have a strong recollection of Trump quoting Ginsburg as well as using Biden's own words against him in the USSC nomination topic (probably the on that stayed somewhat on topic for a while). The line where he stated that everyone knows that the Democrats would have done the same thing (only quicker) stood out.

Trump actually was able to remind the public multiple times that initial estimates suggested that 2 million Americans could have died (which puts 200,000 in perspective), and quoted Dr Fauci who stated that Trump saved thousands of lives with his early travel restrictions. He stated factually that Democratic Governors (including Cuomo) have lauded his help.

Trump brought up the whole Hunter deal (which Wallace was not going to do) which helped steer things in that direction.

But the part that sticks out to me was how Trump just went ahead and had conversations with Wallace about his tax returnes while Biden weakenly attempted to heckle Trump by repeating his demand to release them... which Trump ignored like Biden was not even a fly worth swatting away. Proof that he could not get rattled because Biden was attempting to talk over him.

A Dismal Debate Underlines the Case Against Trump

Even by the standards of a bleak year, Tuesday night’s presidential debate was deeply dispiriting. Granted, it served in its way to confirm what voters already know, or ought to know, about President Donald Trump — that he’s a bloviating bully who says whatever comes into his head and cannot bear to hear anybody else speak.

But precisely for that reason, there was no real engagement with questions of policy. Worse, there was no sign that good-faith disagreement is any longer possible in American politics.

Presidential debates are rarely enlightening or apt to change voters’ minds, but this one marked a new low. It seemed all the more disgraceful coming amid a pandemic that has already claimed more than 200,000 lives. In truth, it suggested a political system on the point of collapse.

It would be wrong to blame the moderator, Chris Wallace, who did as much as anybody could to impose order and elicit thoughtful or informative answers.

Trump makes that a hopeless ambition.

The president interrupted former vice president Joe Biden continuously, and simply ignored the rules he’d agreed to and countless requests to let his rival make himself heard.

In future debates, supposing anybody can bring themselves to watch another, the moderators would do viewers a service by insisting on the right to turn microphones off if rules are broken.

Biden deserves credit for trying to debate according to normal standards — that is, by mentioning policy proposals and referring to facts.

In this gladiatorial setting, such an approach cannot succeed with Trump, but descending to the president’s level wouldn’t have succeeded either.

As a mark of respect for voters, Biden was right to make the effort.

At the end of this dismal evening, one brief moment of clarity appeared and is worth noting.

Both candidates were asked whether they would urge their supporters, in view of likely vote-counting delays, to be patient and wait calmly for the election results to be certified.

Trump equivocated.

Biden said yes.

Even if there weren’t a hundred other reasons to vote Trump out of office in November, that by itself would suffice.

Chris Wallace should have been able to cut the microphone for the President or Biden and let them speak without the President shouting out over and over again and

I have a feeling that Trump is not going to be allowed to perform his pesky shenanigans in the next debate, and for that reason Biden will come across even more obviously as the far better of the two.

Donald Trump won Michigan in 2016 by just 10,704 votes. That’s less than the 20% of times Trump has LIED while in office!

In November, I think that the people will have had enough of the chaos under Trump.

Even a lot of Republicans are struggling to feed their families. They have had to bury their parents and their children.

Biden is a regular guy, who came from a middle class family.

He's not a lefty, despite what ballsles and Scott say. He's from main street, not the 5th Avenue elite.

He's making a train campaign across the middle West.

He will carry the states Clinton lost.

Maybe... or maybe Biden was helped out by the fact that he could use Trump interruptions as an excuse why he couldn't stay focused. The most relevant criticism I heard about Trump from Trump supporters was that he interrupted at times when they felt Biden was headed off into a word salad.

But from what I heard in the first debate, Biden has nothing new to say and will only be attempting to reinforce what he has already suggested. Trump may get another opportunity to move the conversation into places Biden doesn't want to go.

If round one is who can win a dirty boxing match, that was Trump. If everyone demands that the referee come in and break it up more often in round two, then we will see who has the better fighting skills at range.

Ch SAID: But the part that sticks out to me was how Trump just went ahead and had conversations with Wallace about his tax returnes(sic) while Biden weakenly(sic) attempted to heckle Trump by repeating his demand to release them... which Trump ignored like Biden was not even a fly worth swatting away. Proof that he could not get rattled because Biden was attempting to talk over him.
__________

JAMES: Well, I guess Biden challenging Trump to put his tax records where his mouth is simply by releasing them and thus showing that what he claims is true--I guess that impressed others more than it did you,

Including the betting markets? Look what a jump the odds took between pre-debate yesterday and post-debate today.

Would you say that the debate had something to do with that?

Poll Finds Biden the Runaway Winner of First Debate

A new Data for Progress poll shows that debate viewers thought Joe Biden decisively won the first presidential debate against President Trump, by a 52% to 39% margin.

“The poll surveyed debate watchers but then weighted the demographics of the survey group to the population of likely voters in November.

Most pollsters don’t do this, which ends up skewing their results toward Democrats because left-leaning college graduates are disproportionately likely to watch debates.”

Having a bad day, Ch? ;-)

Robert Reich wrote after the debate,

“As we're seeing tonight, Trump is more desperate—and dangerous—than ever before. On top of the bumbling bluster we heard tonight, Trump has repeatedly threatened to reject the results of the election, has suggested throwing out some mail-in ballots, and has even refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power.

These are the goals of a desperate narcissist who knows that he can't win fair and square and who will stop at nothing to cling to power.”

They are also the goals of a man who believes getting Amy Coney Barrett on the Supreme Court will give him a majority to side with him on his plan to contest mail-in voting counted after November 3, as long as they have been postmarked by the third. After those votes, in Trump’s plan, are discarded by the right-wing Supreme Court with the security of Barrett’s vote in his pocket (if that happens), Trump believes they will appoint him president, using the 2000 SCOTUS decision that appointed Bush as their precedent.

CHRIS WALLACE: You have repeatedly criticized the vice president for not specifically calling out Antifa and other left wing extremist groups. But are you willing tonight to condemn white supremacists and militia group and to say that they need to stand down and not add to the violence in a number of these cities as we saw in Kenosha and as we've seen in Portland.

DONALD TRUMP: Sure, I'm willing to do that.

CHRIS WALLACE: Are you prepared specifically to do it.

DONALD TRUMP: I would say almost everything I see is from the left wing not from the right wing.

CHRIS WALLACE: But what are you saying?

DONALD TRUMP: I'm willing to do anything. I want to see peace.

CHRIS WALLACE: Well, do it, sir.

JOE BIDEN: Say it, do it say it.

DONALD TRUMP: What do you want to call them? Give me a name, give me a name, go ahead who do you want me to condemn.

CHRIS WALLACE: White supremacist and white militia.

DONALD TRUMP: Okay, boys stand back and stand by. But I'll tell you what somebody's got to do something about Antifa and the left because this is not a right wing problem this is a left wing.

JOE BIDEN: He's own FBI Director said unlike white supremacist, Antifa is an idea not an organization-

DONALD TRUMP: Oh you got to be kidding me.

_______

So Trump actually says it three time (not twice) while Biden demands that Antifa is not a real thing.

It's basically this:

- Are you willing to condemn:

Yes

- But are you actually winning to condemn:

Sure I am willing to condemn them

- Well then why are you not condemning them?

what the fuck did I just do?

This is all about semantics. It's like arguing with my ex-wife.

Are you sorry about blah blah blah?
- Yes, I am sorry about that.
Well why don't you say you are sorry then?
- I am sorry
Well you don't really mean it so you are not sorry.

That whole line about Trump not condemning basically a non-existent group of "White supremacists" that have less than 0.000000001% to do with the rioting and destruction of our country is semantic nonsense. He has condemned them over and over and people will just ignore it and demand he do it in another way.

Meanwhile... Joe Biden will not even admit that antifa is a real thing, much less condemn or criticize those actions.

Something is missing from your transcript, Ch.

Why did you leave out the fact that when Trump asked for a name to call them, Biden specifically said a name, "Poor boys"? Why did you omit that?

And in your own version of the transcript, Trump did not even condemn the names that Wallace gave him, namely "white supremacists and white militia." He only said, "Okay, boys stand back and stand by," as if to encourage them to stand ready to do violence.
