White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki confirmed to RealClearPolitics during a Friday press briefing that the new president remains opposed to abolishing the parliamentary procedure that requires the Senate to meet a 60-vote threshold on most legislation.
Biden has been fairly consistent in claiming he is against major structural changes to things like ending the filibuster, eliminating the electoral college, and stacking the Supreme Court. Whether or not he holds true to where he is today is a question that remains to be answered. But for now, he appears to be playing things according to what his stated "convictions" are.
An early disagreement? |
To be seen as a bi-partisan moderate unity President, would require the restraint of not ramming legislation through that passes on partisan lines. It would most certainly require Biden and Democrats to avoid high profile largely partisan big moves that seem to be favored by some Democrats. You cannot attempt to pass hugely divisive legislation and still claim to be looking for cooperation and unity.
A few years ago, a newly elected President coming out against something like killing the filibuster would have put an end to the talk. Everyone would expect that the President is being true to his word, that others would be willing to follow, and that doing any sort of 180 on something like that would be political suicide. But in 2020, I doubt it will put an end to the talk, and as long as Democrats hold a technical majority (50-50 + tiebreaker), you can bet that they will continue to push the talk.
The question is: who knows how much power Joe Biden really has. It's clear he as much puppet as President. It certainly would not shock me to see Biden lose this particular battle of ideologies with the far left of his Party. A far left who knew that they couldn't otherwise get a real leftist elected. Sure they appreciate Biden stepping in, hiding in his basement, and getting elected President. But at some point they are going to want to tell slow Joe what to do.

If they negotiate the 60 vote margin. And let the majority rule.
A Wisconsin judge has modified the release conditions for Kyle Rittenhouse, the teen charged with killing two men amid protests in Kenosha last year, after prosecutors alleged he drank beers and was "serenaded" with the Proud Boys anthem at a bar while out on bail.
An attorney for Rittenhouse did not object to the change in bond conditions after they were proposed in January. Rittenhouse, now 18, is free after posting $2 million bail.
Under the new terms, Rittenhouse is barred from drinking alcohol and prohibited from associating with any group or person known to menace others on the basis of things like race or religion. He can't have any weapons.
The 18-year-old is charged with fatally shooting two people in Kenosha on Aug. 25 during protests and unrest over the police shooting of Jacob Blake. His attorneys have argued that he was acting in self-defense. His case has been supported by some on the right.
It's bs but funny. Biden stepping in, hiding in his basement, got his 81,000,000 voters who were not fooled by the first President to get impeached twice!
The bombshells New York times article will get him convicted
BS squared It's clear he as much puppet as President.
You probably believe that he will resign and get Harris to turn us into a socialist government
The question is: who knows how much power Joe Biden really has. It's clear he as much puppet as President.
puppet all the way.
0linsky's running this. that was obvious from the cabinet and administration picks. they brought all the old asshats back together.
it's easy for *Biden to spout an opinion on the filibuster since he has no power over it anyway, and it allows him to score some cheap 'unity' points with the rubes like the alky who are huffing his old-ass farts.
this opinion costs him nothing.

your second comment in, and you failed to stay on topic.
LOL.
your beloved indy was right. you ARE a fucking moron, alky.
LOL.
The only way Biden resigns is if someone pays him big cash to do so.
More likely he will either be impeached for his cash for the "big guy" ventures or will have the 25th amendment thrown at him.
And the filibuster was put in place to protect the minority from tyranny by the majority, the same as the electoral college and Senate/House structure. Majorities who want to run rampant over minorities and make things a straight majority vote are actually attacking our constitution and how our country was formed.
The people who are now calling for that forget they were once that minority and unless they are able to exert tyrannical power will return to that minority. And that is why clean elections are so important.
For now we have become a banana republic but hope still exists.
And it certainly isn't Joe Biden.
How much "cooperation and unity" were McConnell and the Republicans looking for when they denied considering Obama's Supreme Court nomination for nearly a year? The Democrats are fully justified in at least holding the threat of abolishing the filibuster over their heads.
only an imbecile pederast conflates the USSC and the filibuster discussion.
the two are unrelated.
go fuck yourself instead of little boys, pederast.
Want to know if Biden lied about a drunk driver killing his wife? See the Snopes article in the next thread down.
I can respect this
Says Scott.
Well, I can't respect you following the silly Trump line by calling our President "slow" or "sleepy" Joe.
Trumpian parrot!
Got any evidence that Biden is being led by the nose or is in danger of being led by the nose by the Democratic strong left, Scott?
On the other hand, push him too much by rejecting his moderate decency, and--
JOE BIDEN: THE NEW GEORGE WALLACE.
What is really at play here with President Biden, as with George Wallace, is identity politics. The original identity politics was slavery. After the abolition of slavery came the next installment of identity politics — segregation. The identity politics of today is the new segregation — identity politics being the son of segregation and the grandson of slavery. It’s all about race, and its practitioners can easily be called racial supremacists.
As I long ago detailed in this space, racism has been the political fuel for the Democratic Party since its inception.
The party was founded by slave owners. It wrote one platform after another supporting slavery. At its first convention after the Civil War, in 1868, with slavery abolished and segregation the new party doctrine, the party’s slogan was:
This is a White Man’s Country, Let White Men Rule.
The point, of course, was to use race to win elections.
Nothing has changed with the Democratic Party. Today’s identity politics is nothing less than the politics of racial supremacy. Race trumps all.
Read the whole thing.
https://pjmedia.com/instapundit/427475/
The Democrats are fully justified in at least holding the threat of abolishing the filibuster over their heads.
That is actually more of a true insurrection and definitely a trampling of minority rights under the constitution if it leads to the elimination of our current constitutional protections.
And to quickly address that off-topic mention of Snopes:
"Snopes.com is a liberal website that was originally devoted to collecting and debunking urban legends. It was started in 1997 by husband and wife team Barbara and David Mikkelson. Because the Mikkelson's have no formal background or experience in investigative research, it is filled with numerous, intentionally inaccurate information."
Kind of like using Wikipedia to support political arguments
CLAIM:
"racism has been the political fuel for the Democratic Party since its inception"
CLARIFICATION:
but after the passage of the Civil Rights act, white supremacy racism has been the political fuel for the Republican Party, especially since Trump.

Sounds like another threat but how about for starters forcing women to accept men in women's sports and dressing rooms etc., invading Syria, not deporting criminal aliens, and those 17 EO's.
The left is running the show and its the far, far left.
And the only way they can stay in power is by changing the rules.
Of course the "how they got in power" is questionable. (election fraud, deep state interference, foreign election interference, FAKE NEWS media, big tech etc)
We are at the brink of becoming a banana republic if we aren't already.

Snopes, formerly known as the Urban Legends Reference Pages, is a fact-checking website. It has been described as a "well-regarded reference for sorting out myths and rumors" on the Internet. It has also been seen as a source for validating and debunking urban legends and similar stories in American popular culture.

And in politics, one might add.

Commander Thief thinks Trump won BY A LANDSLIDE.
Trump had lowest black and Hispanic unemployment in history. And did prison reform. If he's such a white supremacy racist, he's not a very good one.
The whole every Republican is a racist thing is wearing very thin with tens of millions of Republicans.
From the start when Hillary and the DNC inserted operatives in Trump rallies to advance a "white Supremacist" narrative the left has been repeating that LIE. It's hurt Trump but it obviously isn't true given his record, his close involvement with many minorities throughout his whole life, and his growing minority support.
The left has shamelessly attacked Trump with race. He wasn't the one calling Romney someone who who "put you all back in chains" or eulogizing a KKK leader. Or the "fine people" Hoax. Or that police are hunting down blacks.
The left has done more to increase racial tension than any hate group has.
Including the "pastor"
I guess this is what james calls a moderate position and not driven by the far left.
President Biden, in an executive order aimed at "preventing and combating discrimination on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation," is calling on schools across the country to allow transgender athletes to participate in the sport of their gender identity.
"Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports,"
Quite the "moderate" that "pastor"
Historically, Trump will be seen as the racist instigator par excellence.
_______
Meanwhile, this bears repeating:
How Biden Plans to Beat GOP Obstructionism
The Atlantic:
“The trick, says Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, will be lowering the expectations of an impatient Democratic base that is eager to press the party’s slim advantage by forcing votes on issues like Medicare for All or by making structural changes that could secure the party’s power. Booker says there aren’t enough votes to pass statehood for Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico right now, nor for expanding the Supreme Court.
“Democrats are planning to vote early and often in the new Congress, and to essentially dare Republicans to stand in their way on politically popular measures. … [L]ook for arguments over the filibuster to instead focus on COVID-19 relief (which will almost certainly end up tied to the infrastructure bill) or a new Voting Rights Act. If Republican senators hold those bills up by filibustering, Democrats would accuse them of standing in the way of helping Americans, or standing in the way of voting rights. Ending the filibuster would then be an easier sell.”
_________
So if you don't want the filibuster ended and the Supreme Court packed, PLAY NICE! PLAY FAIR!
You're welcome. :-)
... is calling on schools across the country to allow transgender athletes to participate in the sport of their gender identity.
that is a shot directly at the WOMEN that the pederast told us *Biden would support.
*Biden is turning the pederast into even more of a LIAR than usual.

Vice President Harris has nothing on her schedule today or tomorrow while President Biden only meets with advisors until this afternoon before nothing until Monday. Looks much like the campaign, but these are actually days 3 and 4 on the job.
Lets see the press were complaining that Trump snuck in a round of golf when working 18 hour days.
Biden/Harris just call lids for days at a time.
While the National Guard has to sleep in parking structure. Oh when that was exposed Dr Jill came out with some cookies. Problem solved I saw headlines with just that being mentioned. FAKE NEWS is the enemy of the people.

If Trump were pres they would be “outraged”
While Biden is taking a few days off the Trumps are still working and helping.
THANK YOU President Trump !!!
"We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it, would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy. And this effort very nearly succeeded. But while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be permanently defeated," Amanda Gorman, the Harvard youth poetess, sonorously recited her tin-eared Maoist verses at the inauguration.
But where is this democracy? Where are the adoring crowds, the joyous mobs celebrating and the people cheering the tremendous victory of the democracy of Google, Facebook, Amazon, AT&T, Comcast and their D.C. lobbyists and associates over the Rust Belt and the flyovers?
Biden and the Democrats celebrated their democratic victory with barbed wire, troops in the streets, political terror, and the threat of even more political repression to come.
"There is a broader societal issue that is going to take years to detox the disinformation," Ben Rhodes, the Obama adviser who had boasted of creating a media echo chamber, ranted on Comcast's MSNBC. On that same state TV news network, John Brennan warned that "because of this growth of polarization in the United States" members of the Biden team would be "moving in laser-like fashion" to "root out an insidious threat to our democracy".
Democracy is in a state of permanent emergency that requires locking down D.C., filling it with soldiers, walls, and barbed wire, and investigating political crimes. And D.C. will do everything it can to end the threat that Americans pose to democracy even if its ruling class has to live in its green zone surrounded by troops and barbed wire until democracy is saved from Americans.
Biden, we are told by the political interests and corporations advocating this, is incredibly popular. But the crowds of his devotees can’t be allowed to come to Washington D.C. Anyone who doubts that Biden is incredibly popular is inciting violence and will have to be rooted out as an insidious threat to our democracy. The more people doubt Biden’s popularity, the longer D.C. will have to be under military occupation until finally no one doubts his legitimacy in office.

Boring Is Better

John Dickerson: “Joe Biden has a real shot at being a boring president. It will require constant work. Many forces of commerce and human nature are arrayed against him, and countless obstacles stand in his path. But if the country is lucky, entire days will pass without the president’s activities agitating the public mind.”
james you still haven't answered how you consider Biden's position of allowing men into women's restrooms and sports to name a few situations, is moderate.
I guess you think that is self explanatory.

President Biden is going to push back on Russia. Trump seemed to have an affection on Vladimir Putin.
The NEW president also ordered an intelligence assessment on four nettlesome aspects of Russian behavior: the recent SolarWinds cyber breach, interference in the 2020 election, the use of chemical weapons against opposition leader Alexei Navalny and reports that Russia placed bounties on U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. The intelligence assessment will give Mr. Biden a chance to hold Mr. Putin and his government to account where necessary, and to protest in the strongest terms where appropriate. Each of these episodes demands a stronger U.S. response than Mr. Trump provided. In the case of Mr. Navalny, the question is not only the fate of the leading opposition figure who was target of an assassination attempt, but also Russia’s blatant disregard for an international treaty prohibiting the use of chemical weapons.
During the Cold War, President Ronald Reagan managed to negotiate arms control agreements with the Soviet Union while also maintaining pressure in other areas, such as regional conflicts and human rights. Mr. Biden, who knows those years well, is right to adopt the multitask template for today. Russia has been repeatedly testing the West. The president’s order to the intelligence community also ought to include a report on the “Havana syndrome” harassment that injured and sickened U.S. officials abroad.
Mr. Trump’s overly personal approach to Mr. Putin was as simplistic as it was shadowy. Mr. Biden is starting on the right foot, announcing from the outset that he is prepared to engage on important business but also that he will not flinch at Mr. Putin’s unpleasant and dark arts.
Trump called Putin a dozen times and never said anything about the bounties on our soldiers.
I think that Scott will actually agree with him
We have actual recordings of Trump pussy grabbing.
But you morons believe Twitter feeds claiming about Biden, without anything to prove the allegations.

no alky, we have recordings of Trump TALKING about grabbing pussy.
as opposed to the actual testimony from *Biden's accuser who he quite literally finger fucked.
imbecile.
The end of the Trump era has left the party divided, broadly speaking, into three wings. On the left is a small wing of Never Trumpers who opposed Trump, believing him to be unfit for office and a threat to the republic. They are represented politically by figures like Jeff Flake, Mitt Romney, and John Kasich — and intellectually by the Bulwark and a variety of columnists at mainstream outlets. Many Never Trumpers connected their party’s embrace of Trump with a more longstanding anti-democratic turn. They represent the pro-democracy wing of the Republican Party.
On the right flank is a violent authoritarian wing of roughly equal size. These conservatives fervently support Trump, and either endorsed his insurrection, or else justified it as a false-flag operation. The violent authoritarians supported keeping Trump in office by any means necessary, and oppose any measures to hold him accountable or to punish any of his radical supporters. This wing is represented by members of Congress like QAnon supporters Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert, groups like the Proud Boys, Three Percenters, Oath Keepers, and in the media by various commentators on the Fox News evening lineup, OAN, and Newsmax.
In the middle is what you might call “soft authoritarians.” This faction’s political representation is figures like McConnell and Pence, and its views are expressed by organs like The Wall Street Journal editorial page and National Review. They have supported most of Trump’s abuses of power, firmly opposing impeachment, Congressional oversight, efforts to obtain Trump’s tax returns, or any other accountability mechanism. The soft authoritarians strongly believe in the principle of minority rule, as long as it is enforced through peaceful and legal channels like gerrymandering and vote suppression.
