Oh, and he is now underwater in the most recent likely voter Rasmussen poll...

Joe Biden Approval Rating Starts to Erode amid U.S. Border Crisis
President Joe Biden's approval rating has slipped over the past week as he faces continued scrutiny over the situation at the southern border. There has been a surge of migrants at the border and criticism leveled at the administration from across the political spectrum over issues there.
Republican lawmakers have rounded on the problems and blamed Biden's stances on immigration as having exacerbated them. Meanwhile progressive lawmakers have questioned how those at the border are treated, with concerns raised over the detention of unaccompanied minors.

It's only a matter of time before the Biden "honeymoon" is over. More to the point, eventually people will want more  from Joe Biden than not being Donald Trump. The question is whether or not Joe Biden can actually bring "anything" tangible to the table. At least tangible in the eyes of those most likely to wane in their support of the nearly 80 year old man.

The interesting thing about the Biden cheerleaders are that they are still nearly 100% tied to comparing him to Trump. Those who are under the illusion that the "press conference" went well are primarily speaking from the standpoint that he was less abrasive than Trump or otherwise had some comparison to Trump that they felt was relevant. None of had to do with appearing competent or confident.

But ultimately the President of the United States is not responsible to get along with the Press or coming across as a nice guy. They are responsible for having a handle on the state of the country, being a leader who people will follow, and being someone people have confidence in to make the big decisions. When you need handlers to literally provide you with the pictures of the people you are going to call on to ask questions, that is a problem. Doesn't make people want to follow you.

The LA Times
Joe Biden, Mr. Nice Guy, bares his teeth
by Robin Abcarian

Sure, President Biden made some news at his very first presidential press conference on Thursday.

He expects to miss his May 1 deadline to pull American troops out of Afghanistan, he is working to reverse his predecessor’s punitive border policies, he is inching toward some kind of filibuster reform and he did not rule out running for reelection in 2024.

But anyone — including his own staff — who held their breath anticipating a series of gaffes, misstatements or blunders waited in vain.

What we saw was a man who has risen to the moment, who understands how to play the legislative game better than any president since Lyndon Johnson, and has clearly decided to talk over the heads of his congressional Republican antagonists to communicate directly with the American people. It’s the healthy inverse of his predecessor’s predilection for talking only to his base.

“I would like elected Republican support,” Biden said in response to a question about whether he’d given up on his promise of embracing bipartisanship in the face of GOP obstructionism.

“But what I know I have now is I have electoral support of Republican voters,” he said, who “agree with what I am doing.”

Polls, as Biden noted more than once, show Republican voters agree with him on most aspects of the massive $1.9-trillion COVID relief bill, which passed without a single Republican vote in either chamber, and put money directly into the bank accounts of millions of taxpayers. Polling also shows that most Americans support infrastructure investment, immigration reform and tougher gun laws, all important items on Biden’s agenda, and apparently anathema to Republicans in Congress.

It is beyond satisfying to see Republican leaders such as Sen. Mitch McConnell tying themselves into disingenuous knots as they attempt to trash these initiatives.

Wednesday on Fox News, McConnell accused Biden of “going hard left” and embracing a “left-wing wish list.”

Biden’s infrastructure bill, set to be unveiled Friday in Pittsburgh, “is a Trojan horse that includes massive tax increases on Americans," McConnell said. Democrats, he said, “misread the election. It’s a 50-50 Senate and a very narrow Democrat majority in the House. That’s not a mandate to turn America into Bernie Sanders' view of what America ought to be.”

Oh, Mitch.

Democrats didn’t misread the election. They won it. And they have learned from the missteps of President Obama, not to mention the scorched-earth tactics of McConnell, that trying to appease Republicans always backfires.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Americans, as it happens, are also increasingly alarmed by nakedly partisan GOP attempts to suppress voter turnout.

More than 250 Republican-sponsored bills to impose new voting restrictions are pending in legislatures around the country, something Georgia Democratic voting rights activist Stacey Abrams has called “a coordinated onslaught.” And, it would seem, seriously out of step with public opinion.

“It’s sick,” said Biden, who called the effort “un-American.”

A broad majority of voters, including 56% of Republicans, according to a national poll by Data for Progress and Equal Citizens, support HR 1, the For the People Act, which would expand access to voting, overhaul campaign finance laws and expand conflict of interest laws (including mandating that presidential candidates release their tax returns). The House passed the act in January on a strictly partisan vote. It’s headed for a hellacious battle in the Senate.

Biden dismissed as fallacy the notion that migrants are pouring toward our southern border from Mexico and Central America because they heard he is “a nice guy” compared to Trump. “I guess I should be flattered,” he said, but seasonal imperatives are at work; traveling in winter is safer than in summer.

Biden is certainly nicer than his predecessor. But don’t let his folksy smile fool you; those gleaming chompers can be sharp.

When asked if he thinks he’ll run against Trump in 2024, he was brusque: “Oh, come on. I don’t even think about it. I have no idea whether there’ll be a Republican Party. Do you?”

He called out Republicans on their newfound concern for budget deficits: “It’s kind of amazing. When the federal budget is saving people’s lives, they don’t think it’s such a good idea. When the federal budget is feathering the nest of the wealthiest Americans, 90 of the Fortune 500 companies making billions of dollars, not paying a cent in taxes… If you’re a husband and wife, a schoolteacher and a cop, you’re paying a higher rate than the average person making a billion dollars a year. Something’s wrong.” AMEN!

And he dismissed their never-ending obstructionism on immigration reform as a pose. Republicans for years have ducked the important work of immigration reform by claiming the border “crisis” must first be solved.

“I know they have to posture for a while,” Biden said. “They sort of got to get it out of their system. But I’m ready to work with any Republican who wants to help solve the problem or make the situation better.”

The looming question: Are there any who do?

EASY ANSWER. AMONG REPUBLICAN NAY SAYERS, NO.

The U.S. broke its previous record for most COVID-19 vaccines administered in a single day, with 3.4 million doses reported on Friday, according to the White House.

Why it matters: Sleepy President Biden on Thursday set a new goal of 200 million doses administered in his first 100 days in office. At the current seven-day average, which increased to 2.62 million daily doses with the new record on Friday, the U.S. would comfortably reach that goal before his 100th day on April 30.

By the numbers: States have reported a total of 133.3 million vaccine doses, with about 117 million administered since Biden was inaugurated, according to Bloomberg's vaccine tracker.

26.3% of Americans have received at least their first dose, and 14.3% have been fully vaccinated.Biden has called on every state to make every adult eligible to receive a vaccine by May 1, and over 40 have already said they plan to meet or beat that deadline.

After a 20-year-old woman took five shots of vodka and a prescription pill, she said she was standing outside a Minneapolis bar in May 2017 when a man invited her and a friend to a party. She agreed but soon found out there was no gathering, she later testified.
She “blacked out” instead, waking up on a couch and found that the man she had just met was allegedly sexually assaulting her, according to court records.
Almost four years later, the Minnesota Supreme Court unanimously ruled this week that Francios Momolu Khalil, 24, cannot be found guilty of rape because the woman got drunk voluntarily beforehand. The decision Wednesday overturned Khalil’s prior conviction of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, which had been upheld by an appeals court, and granted him the right to a new trial.
The ruling also poured fuel on an effort in the Minnesota legislature to expand the state’s definition of “mentally incapacitated” to include voluntary intoxication so that defendants such as Khalil can be convicted of more serious offenses.
AD
At issue in Khalil’s case was a state law that says a person is only considered “mentally incapacitated” and incapable of consenting to sex if they are intoxicated on substances “administered to that person without the person’s agreement,” like if someone spikes a punch bowl at a party. In Khalil’s case, Justice Paul Thissen wrote in an opinion, no one disputes that the woman chose to become drunk.

Foxnews says that the President is turning the country into a nation of welfare queens.

LARRY KUDLOW: The infrastructure bill that was strongly touted by President Biden...is really a Trojan horse for the Green New Deal, and it's likely a second Trojan horse for large tax hikes on large and small businesses, successful earners, capital gains, social security. Of course, he won't even let the states cut their own taxes now. This whole plan, writ large, if it's passed later this year, will have an enormously negative impact on an economy that right now is booming. It's booming because of the vaccines, herd immunity, and reopening. It doesn't need stimuli, it sure doesn't need tax hikes, and it sure doesn't need to end the fossil fuel energy business.

This bill also will include the largest expansion of the social welfare state since LBJ's Great Society. You've got items like free community college, universal pre-school, child care and dependent care, earned income tax credits, paid leave, they will all be part of the package. The temporary assistance is going to be made permanent if the Democrats get their way. And, none of these programs have a single work requirement. None of them.

The Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Will Bunch created a Twitter thread about a painting of a Georgia plantation that is hanging behind Kemp in the photograph. Writing about the history of the Callaway plantation in Wilkes county, Georgia, Bunch said the place depicted “thrived because of the back-breaking labor of more than 100 slaves who were held in cruel human bondage”.

The columnist, who later published an op-ed about the discovery, said the symbolism of Kemp signing a bill that Joe Biden has referred to as “Jim Crow in the 21st century” is no coincidence.
