Moments after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murdering George Floyd, Black women congressional leaders on Tuesday renewed their call to pass legislation bearing the slain Black man’s name, bolstered by Vice President Kamala Harris in her address to the nation in the wake of the verdict.
Harris, the daughter of civil rights activists and a former prosecutor who co-sponsored the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act as a U.S. senator last summer, said racial injustice is an American problem that “is holding our nation back from realizing our full potential.”
“A measure of justice isn’t the same as equal justice,” Harris said. “This verdict brings us a step closer and the fact is we still have work to do. We still must reform the system. We are all part of George Floyd’s legacy, and our job now is to honor it and to honor him.”

THE VICE PRESIDENT: Good evening. First, I want to thank the jury for their service, and I want to thank Mr. Floyd’s family for your steadfadnest [steadfastness].
Today, we feel a sigh of relief. Still, it cannot take away the pain. A measure of justice isn’t the same as equal justice. This verdict brings us a step closer. And, the fact is, we still have work to do.
We still must reform the system. Last summer, together with Senator Cory Booker and Representative Karen Bass, I introduced the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. This bill would hold law enforcement accountable and help build trust between law enforcement and our communities. This bill is part of George Floyd’s legacy.
The President and I will continue to urge the Senate to pass this legislation — not as a panacea for every problem, but as a start.
This work is long overdue. America has a long history of systemic racism. Black Americans — and Black men, in particular — have been treated, throughout the course of our history, as less than human.
Black men are fathers and brothers and sons and uncles and grandfathers and friends and neighbors. Their lives must be valued in our education system, in our healthcare system, in our housing system, in our economic system, in our criminal justice system, in our nation. Full stop.
Because of smartphones, so many Americans have now seen the racial injustice that Black Americans have known for generations — the racial injustice that we have fought for generations; that my parents protested in the 1960s; that millions of us, Americans of every race, protested last summer.
Here’s the truth about racial injustice: It is not just a Black America problem or a people of color problem. It is a problem for every American. It is keeping us from fulfilling the promise of liberty and justice for all, and it is holding our nation back from realizing our full potential.

The problem Chauvin faced now is that the jurors were not rational. If they were rational, the jurors would have know the State made a garbage case. They also knew that their names are likely to be released following the verdict; it is likely that their houses will be vandalized, maybe even burned; and if they had been rational they will surely have know that Keith Ellison would punish anyone for these crimes because he is a Democratic hoax. A rational utilitarian would have what to do.
To get an acquittal on appeal, Chauvin needs the justice to get madly–indignant at Keith Ellison’s staged his show trial, and his incompetence in conducting the show trial, and would have inspired the entire State of Minnesota’s descent into anarcho-tyranny. Is that this was a three week trial with testimony of at least five use of force experts, three pathologists, and four other doctors. The jury put in a few hours on Monday night. According to those in the know, enough time to elect a foreperson, set a schedule, guidelines, procedure, etc...

President Biden on Wednesday just called on all employers to provide employees paid time off to get vaccinated or to recover from any side effects, and he'll include a paid tax credit for small businesses to do so, administration officials said.

A New York man told Fox News’ "The Ingraham Angle" exclusively Monday that he was visited at home outside Albany by two FBI agents inquiring if he is the suspect in a picture believed tied to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Brian Grady said he was oblivious when the agents appeared and thought they were building inspectors.
"I just greeted them, ‘Hey how are you doing,’" he said.
He said the two identified themselves and showed him the picture. They wanted to find out if he was the individual in the photo wearing a grey hoodie and black gloves while pulling a bag, he said. The individual is suspected of planting pipe bombs at the Republican National Committee and Democratic National Committee offices in Washington.
He said the agents inquired if he was in the area at the time, and he replied no.
"Honestly, I just felt violated by the FBI," he said.
Grady said it is unclear why he was visited in the first place. He said he is a conservative and shares his political views on Facebook.

Anyone with even a fleeting understanding of law enforcement and corrections knows that every cop behind bars resides in a sequestered environment for their safety. In fact, if a corrections officer/warden knowingly placed a cop in gen pop, they're liable and can be sued by the family of the cop when he turns up dead.

I have a hard time seeing how the actual elements of the three crimes were proved beyond a reasonable doubt. The offense for which Chauvin will be sentenced was second degree murder, which requires that he cause the death of another human being “while committing or attempting to commit a felony offense.” What was the felony that Chauvin was committing? Kneeling on George Floyd, presumably.
But kneeling on someone is not normally a felony. It becomes one here, I take it, because Floyd died. But that bootstraps the requirement of committing a felony by making it identical to the allegedly wrongful act that caused the death for which the defendant is charged. I do not see how this can be a proper reading of the statute.
It's obviously not a proper reading of the statute, but the judge left it so vague as to allow almost any interpretation, including the interpretation that Blackwell suggested. Which was Chauvin didn't have to intend to harm Floyd to have committed assault (false) but only had to "intend" to put his knee on him (also false).
The instructions did not say that Chauvin did not have to intend to harm Floyd. Quite the opposite. The instructions suggested that in the course of a normal assault (which does require intent to harm or injure) he does not have to intent to create the necessary bodily damage to make it be felony assault.
So I was to punch someone in the face, not intending to do more than give them a black eye (misdemeanor assault) - but in the process, that person lost their balance, tripped over something and inadvertently broke their arm, then my punch to the face is now felony assault. I "intended" to assault them with the punch. Therefor any consequences of that action is my responsibility.
As Hinderaker points out, however a knee on the back is not assault, nor can arguing the result of him putting his knee on him can be considered felony assault because he died.

Wray did not directly address Wenstrup’s criticism, other than to confirm he was not the FBI director at the time — a role held in June 2017 by Andrew McCabe — but said he was grateful to Capitol Police and to Wenstrup, a doctor, who used his skills that day to triage injured lawmakers and others who joined them.

On arrival, officers found 15-year-old Trevon Dickson suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. CFD Medic 21 transported Dickson to Mount Carmel East Hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced deceased at 4:31PM.
Meanwhile, 15-year-old Nasir Ndiaye was transported from the scene to Children’s Hospital by private vehicle where he was treated for a gunshot wound. After taking Ndiaye to the hospital, the person(s) who transported Ndiaye fled from the hospital in the transporting vehicle.
The investigation revealed that Ndiaye shot Dickson, for unknown reasons, fatally wounding Dickson. Dickson was able to return fire, wounding Ndiaye, before collapsing. Detectives have charged Ndiaye with Murder for causing Dickson’s death.
Anyone with information regarding this incident, is asked to call Columbus Police Homicide Unit at (614) 645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at (614) 461-TIPS (8477). THE VICE PRESIDENT: Good evening. First, I want to thank the jury for their service, and I want to thank Mr. Floyd’s family for your steadfadnest [steadfastness].
Today, we feel a sigh of relief. Still, it cannot take away the pain. A measure of justice isn’t the same as equal justice. This verdict brings us a step closer. And, the fact is, we still have work to do.
We still must reform the system. Last summer, together with Senator Cory Booker and Representative Karen Bass, I introduced the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. This bill would hold law enforcement accountable and help build trust between law enforcement and our communities. This bill is part of George Floyd’s legacy.
The President and I will continue to urge the Senate to pass this legislation — not as a panacea for every problem, but as a start.
This work is long overdue. America has a long history of systemic racism. Black Americans — and Black men, in particular — have been treated, throughout the course of our history, as less than human.

Is that this was a three week trial with testimony of at least five use of force experts, three pathologists, and four other doctors. The jury put in a few hours on Monday night. According to those in the know, enough time to elect a foreperson, set a schedule, guidelines, procedure, etc...
They came back at 9:00 Tuesday and had a verdict approximately five hours later without asking a single question of the Judge or asking to review any testimony.
They could have been all 56 year old Lithuanian bartenders with advanced degrees in underwater basket weaving or they could have been twelve people they pulled out line at the local Starbucks or they could have all been aging nursing home residents with liver transplants...

The offense for which Chauvin will be sentenced was second degree murder, which requires that he cause the death of another human being “while committing or attempting to commit a felony offense.” What was the felony that Chauvin was committing? Kneeling on George Floyd, presumably.
But kneeling on someone is not normally a felony. It becomes one here, I take it, because Floyd died. But that bootstraps the requirement of committing a felony by making it identical to the allegedly wrongful act that caused the death for which the defendant is charged. I do not see how this can be a proper reading of the statute.
It's obviously not a proper reading of the statute, but the judge left it so vague as to allow almost any interpretation, including the interpretation that Blackwell suggested. Which was Chauvin didn't have to intend to harm Floyd to have committed assault (false) but only had to "intend" to put his knee on him (also false).
The instructions did not say that Chauvin did not have to intend to harm Floyd. Quite the opposite. The instructions suggested that in the course of a normal assault (which does require intent to harm or injure) he does not have to intent to create the necessary bodily damage to make it be felony assault.

As Hinderaker points out, however a knee on the back is not assault, nor can arguing the result of him putting his knee on him can be considered felony assault because he died.
Bootstrap is the concept that you cannot pull yourself up by your own bootstrap, and you cannot pull the related assault up to felony by the death you are attempting to relate to it. It has to be a separate crime. If the argument is that he committed assault and the person died, that would be 2nd degree intentional murder (which they didn't charge). It cannot be both.

Incident Summary:
On Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at 3:52PM, Columbus Police Officers were called to the 3200 hundred block of Marion Pl. on a report of a shooting. On arrival, officers found 15-year-old Trevon Dickson suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. CFD Medic 21 transported Dickson to Mount Carmel East Hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced deceased at 4:31PM.
Meanwhile, 15-year-old Nasir Ndiaye was transported from the scene to Children’s Hospital by private vehicle where he was treated for a gunshot wound. After taking Ndiaye to the hospital, the person(s) who transported Ndiaye fled from the hospital in the transporting vehicle.
The investigation revealed that Ndiaye shot Dickson, for unknown reasons, fatally wounding Dickson. Dickson was able to return fire, wounding Ndiaye, before collapsing. Detectives have charged Ndiaye with Murder for causing Dickson’s death.
Anyone with information regarding this incident, is asked to call Columbus Police Homicide Unit at (614) 645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at (614) 461-TIPS (8477). This is the 62nd homicide in Columbus Ohio in Calendar Year 2021. Incident #210272274. Detective Huffman is the lead detective on the case and is being assisted by Detective Egelhoff
