Virtue signaling now a patriotic duty?

Biden: It's a "patriotic responsibility" for vaccinated people to keep wearing masks

I don't believe that President Biden quite understands that this sort of virtue signally is not considered patriotic by a large portion of our population. In fact, I would offer that many people would find it just dumb, rather than patriotic.

This is just one of those many examples where Biden is not really "reaching out" to anyone other than liberals, and in fact is attempting to shame others into following this particular liberal logic. There is no evidence, scientific or otherwise, that suggests that vaccinated people have to wear masks. This concept only exists in the minds of the left. Just like wearing a mask while driving alone in your car or while sitting alone on a remote session video conference with world leaders. It makes no sense.

But apparently someone told Slow Joe that it does. Perhaps Joe, Q, Murr, and Sal?

The “patriotic responsibility” nonsense is half paranoia, half armchair sociology. An unvaxxed person might wear his mask when not required simply to err on the side of caution and provide a bit of extra risk reduction in case there are unvaccinated people nearby, the thinking goes. But if that’s the rule we’re following then we’re wearing masks forever. The population of unvaxxed Americans isn’t small, after all, and won’t be small anytime soon. The other reason to wear the mask, supposedly, is to set an example for the unvaccinated while case counts in the U.S. remain in the tens of thousands. If Biden’s still wearing his mask, we’re asked to believe, then the average joe who’s thinking of abandoning his own mask might stick with it awhile longer, until we’ve driven infections down to Israeli levels.

I have to say, though, in light of last night’s poll showing once again that the unvaccinated are getting back to normal faster than the vaccinated are, I’m impatient with the argument that Biden and other pols should unmask as a way to incentivize vaccination. Even though that theory is popular among certain experts:

And note the hypocritical idiocy of the left on this. Especially from imbeciles like the alky who were shrieking on a daily basis that Trump was literally murdering Americans every day because he did not "lead by example" and wear a mask.

And now, because HE'S an imbecile, Slow Joe wears a mask post-vaccination. Eroding the public's confidence in the vaccine in the process.

This is why we will always, always, always need more and bigger government. Because government is so SMART. And because the alky can't wipe his own decrepit ass without a government pamphlet from Health and Human Services.

Biden, pressed on if he thought America was racist, told NBC News in an interview Thursday, "No, I don't think the American people are racist, but I think after 400 years, African Americans have been left in a position where they are so behind the eight ball, in terms of education, health, in terms of opportunity."

BREAKING: Biden Official Confirms Plans to Ban Fried Chicken and Grape Drink

AUSTIN, TX– The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) is preparing to institute more measures to safeguard black lives by banning products they like. After it was announced that the Biden administration would prohibit the sale of menthol cigarettes, officials are looking at other ways the government can save the black community from itself.

Only days after the menthol ban was announced, the FDA declared that it was pushing full steam ahead with its effort to rescue the black community through what they refer to as “strategic race-based prohibition.” An FDA official explained that the fried fowl and grape-flavored cola – also known as “grape drank” – must be banned because “these hopeless negroes don’t know how to act.”

“Preventing black people from killing themselves by banning certain products is the least we can do given the level of oppression they have endured in this country,” said a high-ranking member of the Biden administration. “This is why fried chicken and grape soda have to go.”

He added: “How could they possibly survive if we don’t make these decisions for them?”

Some have raised concerns about the menthol ban, arguing that it would lead to more interactions with the police which could result in more black fatalities during these encounters. However, the FDA assures us the number of black men shot to death by police will pale in comparison to the warm fuzzy feeling white progressives will have knowing African Americans are no longer smoking Newports, eating Popeye’s, or drinking carbonated grape-flavored beverages.

Another FDA official also noted that “dying from fried chicken consumption is proven to be more fatal than being riddled with racist police bullets.”

“It is SO fatal. You don’t even know,” the official said.

The new measure is expected to cause some upheaval in the fried chicken industry. Kentucky Fried Chicken and Popeye’s are both scrambling to develop new baked chicken recipes and have begun looking at plant-based options. “We need to show these blacks that fake fried chicken is better than real fried chicken,” he argued.

The official seemed optimistic about the plan, insisting that “it won’t be nearly as hard as getting them to take that damn vaccine.”

Taegan Goddard agrees that less mask wearing is now indicated.

See his comment at the end of this article:

The Coronavirus Vaccine
Is Very, Very Good
The Washington Post points out that, for those vaccinated, “the risk of serious illness from the coronavirus — and spreading the virus to others — is vanishingly low”:

*Out of 87 million people vaccinated, 7,157 experienced breakthrough infections.
*Of those, 498 were hospitalized and 88 died.
*So, vaccinated people have a 0.0005 percent chance of hospitalization and a 0.0001 percent chance of dying from the coronavirus.

“Those percentages are far lower than the risk of being hospitalized with or dying of the seasonal flu, some experts note. They also represent much less risk than people are willing to take on every day when they drive in their car or engage in a sport.”

Goddard: "This really shows how the CDC’s mask guidance, which was revised this week, is still too strict for the vaccinated."
_______

Again, getting vaccinated is FAR more important than wearing a mask. Biden is only suggesting that being a good example by wearing a mask can also be important.

President Trump was right. The covid-19 was really the flu!

Flu has disappeared worldwide during the COVID pandemic.

SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN Apr 29, 2021 10:20 PM ET

As Scientific American reported last fall, the drop-off in flu numbers was both swift and universal. Since then, cases have stayed remarkably low. “There’s just no flu circulating,” says Greg Poland, who has studied the disease at the Mayo Clinic for decades. The U.S. saw about 600 deaths from influenza during the 2020-2021 flu season. In comparison, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated there were roughly 22,000 deaths in the prior season and 34,000 two seasons ago. Because each year’s flu vaccine is based on strains that have been circulating during the past year, it is unclear how next year’s vaccine will fare, should the typical patterns of the disease return. The WHO made its flu strain recommendations for vaccines in late February as usual, but they were based on far fewer cases than in a common year. At the same time, with fewer virus particles circulating in the world, there is less chance of an upcoming mutation, so it is possible the 2021–2022 vaccine will prove extra effective. Public health experts are grateful for the reprieve. Some are also worried about a lost immune response, however.

The reopening and similar steps elsewhere around the country reflect increasing optimism as COVID-19 deaths tumble and the ranks of the vaccinated grow — a stark contrast to the worsening disaster in India and Brazil and the scant availability of vaccines in many poor parts of the world.

While the overall number of lives lost to COVID-19 in the U.S. has eclipsed 575,000, deaths have plummeted to an average of about 670 per day from a peak of around 3,400 in mid-January. when Sleepy Joe Biden was sworn in.

Back to normality.

WASHINGTON — NBC’s Peter Alexander perfectly summed up President Joe Biden’s first address to Congress, which laid out his $1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief law, his $2 trillion-plus infrastructure/jobs plan and his new $1.8 trillion proposal for preschool and free community college: "The Era of Big Government is back."

And the question we have is whether today’s Republican Party — after the Trump presidency and after the voters that Trump brought in with his populism — can legitimately stop it.

According to our most recent NBC News poll, 55 percent of Americans say the government should do more to solve the country’s problems, while 41 percent say the government is doing too many things that should instead be left to businesses and individuals.

On Meet The Press today, a very conservative congressman, who is actually not going to run again, said

The private sector should build the infrastructure privately.

Will you want to pay a fee to take the interstate highways in the next decades?

He said the same thing about ports and airports and again sewer systems. Instead of using taxpayer funds.

If the question is presented to the people, I don't think they are libertarian views.

There are a few bridges that need a fee, but do you really want to pay to cross a stream of river?

Big government is back.

In his address Wednesday night, Biden called on Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act by May 25th, the one year anniversary of Floyd's death.

The legislation looks to end racial and religious profiling, bans chokeholds and no-knock warrants, requires deadly force be used only as a last resort after officers have employed de-escalation techniques first, limits the transfer of military-grade equipment to law enforcement agencies and would make it easier to hold officers accountable in court by limiting qualified immunity.

It was named for Floyd, the black man who was killed by white police officer Derek Chauvin on May 25, 2020 - Memorial Day weekend of last year. Chauvin was convicted on murder and manslaughter charges.

The Floyd act has passed the Democratic-controlled House but is stalled in the Senate where it needs the support of at least 10 Republicans to move forward.

Scott, the only black Republican senator, has taken the lead on negotiations for the GOP and proposed legislation of his own.

But his legislation doesn't include the qualified immunity provision that Democrats want.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers met on Capitol Hill Thursday to talk about a compromise bill. Afterward the lawmakers said 'progress' had been made but offered no specifics.

Biden said he will let the lawmakers work it out in negotiations.

In the 'Today Show' interview, Biden continued to blame the rise in migrants at the border on President Donald Trump and said his administration had actually brought the number down.

'It's way down now. We've now got control,' Biden said.

A White House official told CNN that the number of migrant children being held in jail-like conditions by US Customs and Border Protection dropped nearly 84% in the span of a month. As of Wednesday, there were 954 children in CBP facilities, down from a peak of 5,767 on March 28.

Additionally, Biden said because the Trump administration waited so long to cooperate with the presidential transition - due to Trump contesting the election results - his transition team was unable to get information it needed from the relevant government agencies.

'We didn't find out they had fire a whole lot of people that they were understaffed considerably,' Biden said.

He also said the Trump administration failed to plan for the seasonal upsurge that comes every spring.

'They didn't have beds that were available. They didn't plan for the overflow,' he said, arguing conditions for the kids, who have been put into overcrowded shelters with some sleeping on the floor, are better now.

'There's a significant change right now, significant change in circumstance for children coming to and at the border,' he said.

The lunatics that believe in the deep state conspiracy theorists are attempting to conceal racism and gender discrimination and claim it's being taught to believe they are socialist and communist party supporter.

In Cupertino, California, third-graders at R. I. Meyerholz Elementary School were required to deconstruct their racial identities and then rank themselves according to their “power and privilege.” The teacher asked all students to create an “identity map,” which required them to list their race, class, gender, religion, family structure, and other characteristics. The teacher explained to students that they live in a “dominant culture” of “white, middle class, cisgender, educated, able-bodied, Christian, English speaker[s],” who, according to the lesson, “created and maintained” this culture in order “to hold power and stay in power.” Students were then asked to deconstruct these intersectional identities and “circle the identities that hold power and privilege” on their identity maps, ranking their traits based on the hierarchy the teacher had just explained to them.

Some parents may agree with such content. But public institutions funded with public dollars do not exist to groom activists for particular causes, shame children for their immutable traits, or deny them their agency or their childhood. We are talking about eight- and nine-year-old kids who believe in Santa Claus, hide their lost teeth under their pillow for the tooth fairy, and curl up in their parents’ laps for comfort and love. It is immoral—at least—to reduce them to confected racial and gender categories and to teach them to do the same to others. Parents around the country need to understand what is happening in a growing number of elementary classrooms.

Half of GOP Believes There’s Evidence of Stolen Election
Philip Bump looks at a new CNN poll:
“About 3-in-10 Americans think that Biden didn’t legitimately win, despite the utter lack of evidence to bolster that claim. More alarmingly, 1-in-5 believe there’s actually solid evidence Biden didn’t win, which there is not. And more alarming still, that position — that there’s this solid evidence the election was stolen — is held by half of Republicans.”

T. Goddard comments:
"This is not the first poll that suggests half of Republicans are willing to believe something without any evidence."

Trump Is Obsessed With Arizona ‘Audit’ of Election
Former President Donald Trump has become “fixated” on the work of the Cyber Ninjas, the little-known firm that has undertaken an audit of the 2020 election in Arizona, the Washington Post reports.

Said one aide: “He talks about it constantly.”

The aide noted that Trump asks for updates multiple times a day and at one point carried on for 45 minutes on the subject.

Rastus:
He gwine be SO disappointed.

U.S. Restricts Travel from India
The Biden administration will restrict travel from India as that country grapples with a gigantic surge in coronavirus cases, CNBC reports.

Stimulus Checks Boost Income Rates
“Household income rose at a record pace of 21.1% in March as federal-stimulus checks helped fuel an economic revival that is poised to endure with an easing pandemic,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The 21.1% March surge in income was the largest monthly increase for government records tracing back to 1959, largely reflecting $1,400 stimulus checks included in President Biden’s fiscal relief package signed into law in March.”

Biden and Harris Flood the Zone
Los Angeles Times:
“This isn’t the new administration’s first coordinated swing-state outreach — Biden, Harris and their spouses all hit the road in March for a victory lap following Congress’ passage of the president’s $1.9-trillion coronavirus relief package. And it’s a classic presidential play.

“But the administration’s focus and message discipline, not to mention the deployment of multiple officials and spouses fanning out across the country, is an about-face from the Trump years and a frenetic presidency that was mostly a one-man show.

“Much of Biden’s message is framed in contrast to his predecessor, an effort to convince Americans that the chaos of the past four years — and the woes of a year lost in many ways to the pandemic — is behind them.”

Red States Try to Purge Voters From the Rolls
Bloomberg:
“GOP-led state legislatures in Utah, Iowa, Texas and elsewhere want local officials to check voter names against other official sources, including death records, criminal records, lists from state motor vehicle departments and federal immigration records, and remove questionable names.

“Yet those records are not structured for identifying voters and when they have been used too broadly to cull rolls in the past, tens of thousands of people were put at risk of being disenfranchised, many of them poor and people of color.”

Consumers shelled out more money on goods, particularly big-ticket items such as autos and furniture, compared with services in March. But economists expect that to change in the coming months due to widespread vaccinations and the broader reopening of the economy.

“If we have Covid-19 cases under control, that would ideally make way for us to reopen the services sector of the economy,” said Pooja Sriram, U.S. economist at Barclays. “That, in fact, is a crucial aspect of ensuring that this recovery continues.”

Americans will have cash to spend. The personal-saving rate surged to 27.6% in March, the second highest rate on record, eclipsed only by last April when a first round of government aid was distributed early in the pandemic.

Stimulus payments included in the latest package propelled spending the most of all three rounds of pandemic stimulus checks, according to data-analytics company Earnest Research.

People who received stimulus money drove up total spending growth by 29 percentage points in mid-March compared with the same period in 2019 underTrump, Earnest transaction figures show. That outpaced bumps of 23 and 22 points after the first and second stimulus checks, respectively.

his first 100 days, President Trump had 29 statements assessed by PolitiFact (17 false) compared to 12 statements from President Obama (1 false) and 4 statements from President Biden (2 false). As a raw count, Trump told more falsehoods than Biden and Obama combined.

We can also look at these data as a percent of all fact-checked statements per president, during each 100-day period.

Still, President Trump told more false statements than President Biden and President Obama during their first 100 days. President Obama was the most honest president in the first 100 days compared to Presidents Biden and Trump.

President Biden’s deception rate might still appear high, but the number of fact-checked statements is small (4). Biden’s statement count might be low because many claims did not meet PolitiFact’s criteria for fact-checking.

In other words, President Biden might simply be an uncontroversial speaker.

Finally, what did each president lie about during their first 100 days as president? Biden’s false statements discussed the minimum wage and immigration patterns in the US. Trump, on the other hand, falsely discussed US murder rates, immigration and refugees, and that he didn’t know Steve Bannon before his presidential campaign. Finally, Obama’s false statement concerned US math education trends.

These results are perhaps unsurprising. Politicians often lie for a reason, but it’s clear that some presidents show an early taste for deception more than others.

At the time of this writing, President Trump was a more deceptive president than President Biden or President Obama in their first 100 days.

The FBI's search of Rudy Giuliani's office this week signals that federal law enforcement is significantly ramping up its investigation into former President Trump's ally and onetime legal adviser.

Little is known about the scope of the investigation, but reporting suggests that the focus could be on Giuliani's work on behalf of foreign clients, including Ukraine, and his failure to register as a foreign agent while serving as the president's personal attorney.

And former Department of Justice officials say that such an investigation into a high-profile lawyer that could jeopardize attorney-client privilege would likely need authorization from some of the highest-ranking law enforcement officials in the government.

It looks like the Bee has found our very own ALKY -

NEW YORK, NY—CNN's Brian Stelter has introduced a brand new segment of his show where he will discuss all the horrible things Trump would have tweeted if he hadn't been kicked off of Twitter.

"As Americans, it's important for us to remember just how bad, how mean, how divorced from the facts, how, how, how much of a stinky poopoo head Mr. Trump really was," said Stelter. "We hope this new segment covering Trump's hypothetical tweets will help viewers remember how we literally saved democracy by electing Biden in a completely fair, not rigged election."

Some of the hypothetical Trump tweets discussed on the first show will include gems like:

"The very sad loser 'president' Biden says he cured the virus. But that was all me! Very low ratings! Pathetic!"

"Many fine people including our African Americans and the LATINO community have received the vaccine. YOUR WELCOME! ENJOY!"

"The whole world is laughing at us thanks to Sleepy Joe and Cacklin' Kamala. Why does that woman laugh at everything? Unstable? Maybe, and MANY are saying that! Including China!!!!"

"Biden and the looney liberals are a total disgrace. GET SMART AMERICA!"

"Failing CNN and all the other 'FAKE NEWS' could use a lesson or maybe several lessons from OAN. They are very kind to me. Real journalism!"

"Biden doesn't seem to care about all the illegals like he said? Too bad!!! Should have listened to the experts, Joe! (me)"

"These heinous tweets are a reminder of Trump's fascism," wept Stelter to the camera after ranting about each tweet for twenty minutes. "Tomorrow, we will show you worse tweets than this!"

Trump responded to the new CNN segment, saying: "So sad!! Little Stelter at CNN can't get along without me. Want me back Brian? 2024?"

The Giuliani warrants were in regards to Foreign Agents Registration issues... just as most people suspected. This is one of those "crimes" that pretty much everyone who can be possibly considered a foreign lobbyist or works on behalf of a foreign entity... can be charged with.

Unless of course they are one of the very few who "register".

Generally (as in 99% of the time) they just have people retroactively register (which comes at a registration cost) and pay a fine. When they are anyone having to do with Donald Trump, then they attempt to throw the book at them and act as if they are the second coming of Al Capone.

The real issue (like it was with Manafort, Gates, Flynn, Papadopoulos, etc...) was that they are hoping to get someone to "turn" on Trump. Of course it never occurs to them that people like Manafort end up being sentenced to Prison (not because they won't give up any goods, but because they have nothing to give up).

Manafort worked on Trump's campaign for like four months and suddenly the FBI thinks he is some sort of sidekick. Butch Cassidy to the Sundance Kid. Now perhaps they believe that Rudy has all of the secret files that will doom Trump. Bonnie and Clyde style!

Why do we let these fucking animals into our fine dining establishments, and where's a Derek Chauvin when you need him?

The man accused of opening fire outside Brooklyn’s famed Peter Luger Steak House had just been given the boot for fighting over women during a birthday party there, law enforcement sources told The Post on Friday.

One of his wounded victims is a 30-year-old tourist from California — who now has a bullet lodged in his spine, sources said.

Minutes before the Thursday night shooting, suspect Arkies Sommerville, 24, of Brooklyn had been escorted out of the steak joint by three fellow partygoers in an attempt to calm him down amid a verbal dispute over some women who weren’t at the gig, sources said.

But instead of cooling off outside the Williamsburg eatery, Sommerville kept arguing, and the other men finally gave up and began heading back inside, sources said.

That prompted Sommerville to pull out a silver, .38-caliber revolver and fire three rounds at them around 9:45 p.m., law enforcement sources said.

None of the intended targets were hit, but two other men who were dining outside were struck by stray bullets.

The tourist was shot in his spine, while the other wounded man, 57, was shot in the gut.

Both victims were rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue in Manhattan, where the older man was treated and released and the younger victim was expected to undergo surgery, sources said.

While fleeing the scene, Sommerville — who was busted in 2014 for allegedly brandishing a fake pistol near a play area in a McDonald’s restaurant — passed a pair of 15-year-old boys, pointed the handgun at them and snarled, “What are you looking at?,” sources said.

One of the teens called 911, sources said.

Cops who raced to the scene nabbed Sommerville on Bedford Avenue, about four blocks from the restaurant, sources said.

He was identified by the teens as well as a cousin at whom he allegedly shot outside Peter Luger, sources said.

Delaware police officer declared dead after assault while responding to call for help

Delmar Police Corporal Keith Heacook is still on life support and his organs will be donated

A Delaware police officer was declared dead Wednesday after he suffered significant head injuries while responding to a fight at a housing subdivision Sunday morning, according to reports.

Delmar Police Corporal Keith Heacook, 54, was still on life support even after being declared clinically deceased at 12:48 p.m., Delmar Police Chief Ivan Barkley said in an evening news conference.

"I need you to know that even with his sacrifice, he’s still a hero for someone," Barkley said. "Corporal Keith Heacook’s family graciously decided to donate his organs."

Police said 30-year-old Randon D. Wilkerson of Salisbury attacked Heacook and also assaulted a 73-year-old man and a 76-year-old woman living across the street.

A 911 caller reported Wilkerson, a resident of the subdivision, was fighting with other residents and destroying items inside a home.

Sources say Mayor Jones doubled her security as she cut city police positions

ST. LOUIS
(KMOV.com) -- While St. Louis City Mayor Tishaura Jones looks to cut open police positions in the city, she's adding officers to her personal security team.

Dozens of vacant SLMPD positions cut from city budget
Dozens of vacant SLMPD positions cut from city budget
Dozens of vacant St. Louis police officer positions were eliminated under the Fiscal Year 22 budget.

Just like the governor, county executive or other mayors, the St. Louis City mayor has typically used police officers as their security detail. The officers pick them up at home, drive them to and from work, and escort them to various public events. And in the past, officers didn't go with them to places like the grocery store.

Under former St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson, only two police officers were assigned to her security detail. According to a spokesperson for the police union, when Mayor Jones took office, she doubled the number to four.

A second police source also confirmed the number is greater than it was before. However, the police department told us they would not officially disclose the number of assigned officers and wouldn't tell us why not.

The mayor's office also wouldn't be specific, a spokesperson said "We cannot provide much information for security reasons, however the staffing for the mayor's security is based upon recommendations provided to our office before inauguration."

The era of government distrust is gone.

Gallup noted the embrace of government had risen 7 points since the previous year, before the start of the pandemic.

"Democrats and independents both show double-digit gains in favoring a more active government role from last year, while Republicans' views are unchanged," Gallup wrote last September. "The latest 61-point gap between Democrats and Republicans is the highest on record, although it is similar to differences of 60 points in 2016 and 58 points in 2011."

The only other time support for bigger government in Gallup's poll approached a majority was in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. The covid-19 pandemic crisis has become a transitional movement. Sleepy Joe is the next FDR without Japanese concentration camps.

But as the Washington Post's Aaron Blake notes, recent NBC News polling on the same topic showed support for more government had been steadily growing over the last decade. NBC's top lines this month were very similar to Gallup's from last fall, with 55% saying the government should do more while 41% said it was doing too many things. But NBC surveys showed support for more government had been polling in the mid-50s or higher since April of 2017, whereas that sentiment was hovering around 50% closer to a decade ago (June/2013: 48%; June/2012: 49%; June/2011: 51%).

While Gallup's polling also shows an upward trend over the last decade in those wanting a bigger role for government, it also suggests the feeling accelerated during the pandemic. But whichever way you slice it, Americans—Democrats and independents, in particular—want more government, not less.

So President Biden isn't so much selling the nation on the need for a bigger role for the federal government; rather he's reflecting the desire for more government and meeting a need that already existed.

Americans believe that President Biden faced bigger challenges than his predecessor Donald Trump during his first 100 days in office — and performed better than Trump despite those difficulties, according to a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll.

The survey of 1,558 U.S. adults, which was conducted from April 27 to April 29, found that less than a third say Trump’s challenges were bigger than Biden’s (31 percent) or that Trump performed better (32 percent) during the first 100 days of his presidency. Pluralities say that Biden has performed better than Trump (41 percent) in the face of greater obstacles (37 percent).

The deep state is protecting n****s from harming their helpless selves!

And letting them eventually replace the Anglo Saxtionists who built this world!

Merriam-Webster recently did the world a huge favor by updating its definition of racism to include "a doctrine or political program based on the assumption of racism and designed to execute its principles" and "a political or social system founded on racism." Many people think that racism is simply hatred toward people of a different race, which completely overlooks the centuries-long impact of race-based laws, policies, and practices that have caused and perpetuated racial inequities.

In the past two weeks, President Joe Biden's attorney general has also made good on a promise to amplify the department's civil rights focus, announcing sweeping investigations into police departments in Minneapolis and Louisville as well as hate crime charges against three Georgia men in connection with the killing of Ahmaud Arbery.

The FBI action in New York on Wednesday was especially notable both because of the high-profile nature of the Giuliani investigation and because of the vigorous debate the search warrant question had produced inside the Trump-era Justice Department.

Prosecutors in New York wanted last fall to serve a warrant on Giuliani as part of an investigation into whether he had failed to register as a foreign agent over his dealings with Ukrainian officials. But that request was rebuffed by officials in the deputy attorney general's office in Washington. In a dispute over investigative tactics, they raised concerns both before and after the election and did not sign off on a warrant, multiple people familiar with the matter have said.

A new leadership team under Garland apparently reached a different conclusion, though it is not clear on what grounds. The new deputy attorney general, Lisa Monaco, and John Carlin, her top deputy, have both previously led the department's national security division — which is responsible for enforcing the Foreign Agents Registration Act, or FARA — and will presumably be engaged in the investigation as it moves forward.

Former Justice Department official David Laufman said it would be reasonable for the new leadership team to reassess how legal actions were made, especially if they believed the previous administration reached an incorrect decision “on an important investigative action in a matter of considerable importance.”

Stuart Gerson, who served as acting attorney general in the first weeks of the Clinton administration before Janet Reno was confirmed, said it is common for new leaders to make big decisions when they take their positions.

“You've got a briefing book on your desk of issues — if you didn't know them before, you know them now,” Gerson said. “Whatever your philosophy is, you see some of these things as directly important to satisfying a public need.”

To obtain the warrants from a judge, prosecutors would need to present probable cause that Giuliani had broken the law. He has denied all wrongdoing and sought Thursday to discredit the investigation.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Investigators specified that they were conducting a FARA investigation, said Giuliani’s lawyer, Robert Costello. At least one warrant also seeks information related to Marie Yovanovitch, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine who was ousted from her job two years ago on Trump’s orders.

Yovanovitch was a central player in the first impeachment case against Trump and detailed a smear campaign by Giuliani and other Trump allies that preceded her 2019 removal from the job.

The fact that the warrant makes mention of Yovanovitch, and that it seeks communication between Giuliani and several Ukrainians, suggests authorities are attempting to determine whether Giuliani’s efforts to remove the ambassador were at the behest of Trump or of Ukrainians. That distinction matters because federal law requires anyone lobbying the U.S. on behalf of a foreign country or entity to register their work with the Justice Department.

Giuliani, the 76-year-old former New York City mayor once celebrated for his leadership after 9/11, has been a staunch supporter of Trump, and fronted his failed legal effort to overturn the election, falsely claiming it had been a massive effort by Democrats to rig the results, even though election officials of both political parties and TrumpAttorney General William Barr said there was no widespread election fraud.

Giuliani was also deeply involved in efforts to encourage Ukraine to find damaging information about Biden in the run-up to the 2020 election, meeting with a Ukrainian lawmaker whom U.S. officials have described as an active Russian agent and who released audio recordings during the 2020 presidential campaign in an effort to discredit Biden’s candidacy.

Giuliani also pushed hard for the ouster of Yovanovitch, whose departure was one of the pivotal issues of the first Trump impeachment case. Yovanovitch, a career diplomat who served for decades under both Republican and Democratic presidents and was first appointed by Ronald Reagan, testified in chilling detail during the impeachment proceeding about a “smear campaign” against her by Giuliani and others.

Major decisions still await at the Justice Department in other high-profile but unrelated investigations that Garland inherited from the Trump administration, including a tax probe into President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, and a investigation into potential sex trafficking and public corruption by Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz.

Misogenist and again birther campaigns are representative of the current Republican party.

Mainstream conservatives fuel the fire

The digital smear campaign reinforced a narrative about Harris that was already being pushed by prominent mainstream conservative commentators. Here are two examples:

Willie Brown, the former speaker of California Assembly, former mayor of San Francisco ... has been very open about the fact that the affair they had is what boosted her up.

Radio host Rush Limbaugh, Aug. 18, 2020

Kamala Harris moved up in California politics because she was dating Willie Brown.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Sept. 21, 2020

All of this presented a dilemma for the women’s groups that had promised to have Harris’s back. “We were holding fire for a while, because we didn’t want to give it lift,” says Tina Tchen, who was chief of staff to former first lady Michelle Obama and who currently heads TIME’S UP Now, an advocacy organization born of the #MeToo movement.

But then, during a campaign rally in New Hampshire, President Trump addressed the possibility that a 2020 Democratic victory might put Harris in position to become the first female president.

I don’t want to see a woman president get in to that position the way she’d do it, and she is not competent.

Hypocritical complaints against big government spending, of course, are time-honored talking points for Republicans, and a new poll shows that Americans are increasingly unconvinced by the GOP’s complaints. In fact, Biden’s spending proposals appear to be winning by a landslide. According to a Reuters/Ipsos survey released on Friday, the various proposals at the center of Biden’s economic plan—including tax hikes for the wealthy and bulking up IRS audits for high earners—all polled at over 60 percent. The most popular measure by far, paid family and medical leave, had the backing of an overwhelming 69 percent of Americans polled. Overall, 73 percent of those polled approved of Biden’s plans for the economy.

Though the responses split across party lines, Reuters reports that there was some considerable dissonance among Republicans polled. One notable break was the view on “trickle-down economics”—the discredited economic theory popularized by former president Ronald Reagan that argues tax breaks for the very wealthy will trickle down to the middle class and poor people—with four in 10 agreeing with Biden’s claim this week that it’s a failed theory. In any event, it appears that Republicans will have to go back to the drawing board if they want to identify a real threat to Biden’s popularity. If Biden’s American Families Plan becomes reality, that task will be even more urgent, since it’s highly unlikely that Americans will be willing to part with critical social benefits so much of the rest of the world gets to take for granted.

Sleepy Joe has ridden to the task.

GOP Lawmaker Arrested After Altercation with Student

Kansas state Rep. Mark Samsel (R) was arrested on charges of misdemeanor battery after getting into a physical altercation with a student while substitute teaching, the Kansas City Star reports.

In one video, Samsel tells the student: “You’re about ready to anger me and get the wrath of God. Do you believe me when I tell you that God has been speaking to me?” He then pushes him, and the student runs to the other side of the classroom.

In another video, he tells students: “Class, you have permission to kick him in the balls.”

Parents say Samsel “put hands on the student” and kneed him in the crotch. In a video immediately after the incident, the student is shown on the ground. Samsel is standing over him and says: “Did it hurt?”

Famous. But. Incompetent. Slow Joe's STASI:

Paul and Marilyn Hueper, owners of Homer Inn & Spa, woke with a start at 9 a.m. April 28 when a dozen armed FBI agents kicked down their front door in an investigation associated with Rep. Nancy Pelosi's stolen laptop, which was taken during the Jan. 6 siege of the nation's Capitol.

Speaking April 29 to Kenai-based radio host Bob Bird of the Bird's Eye View, Paul recalled that he was alarmed and shocked to come out of his bedroom with seven guns pointing at him and his wife.

"It was a little alarming when I turned around the corner," Paul said. "The first thing they did was start barking out commandments."

Ultimately, the couple was handcuffed and interrogated for the better part of three hours before being released. In the end, it was a case of mistaken identity.

The Huepers were in D.C. for the rally with President Trump, but they never came close to entering the Capitol, and certainly never took Pelosi's laptop.

It appears the FBI were most interested in Marilyn. They had a photo of a woman wearing the same coat as her, and with a similar hairstyle. The photo was taken from Capitol building cameras, according to Marilyn, but beyond the hair and coat, there is little similarity between Marilyn and the woman photographed inside the Capitol.

The entire saga, however, left the Huepers disoriented but determined to better understand and defend their personal liberties and those of their friends and neighbors.

Paul said he repeatedly asked to see a search warrant but was denied until two and a half hours had gone by.

[...]

While separated from her husband, Marilyn was told why the agents were at their home.

“They said, ‘We’re here for Nancy Pelosi’s laptop,” she recalled. “So, I guess it was stolen and it is still at large.”

The agents then claimed that they had positively identified Marilyn as being in the Capitol building and that they wanted to know who she was working with.

Marilyn said she tried to be respectful but couldn’t help but laugh.

(Reuters) - During a December visit to New York City, writer E. Jean Carroll says she went shopping with a fashion consultant to find the “best outfit” for one of the most important days of her life - when she’ll sit face-to-face with the man she accuses of raping her decades ago, former President Donald Trump.

The author and journalist hopes that day will come this year. Her lawyers are seeking to depose Trump in a defamation lawsuit that Carroll filed against the former president in November 2019 after he denied her accusation that he raped her at a Manhattan department store in the mid-1990s. Trump said he never knew Carroll and accused her of lying to sell her new book, adding: “She’s not my type.”

She plans to be there if Trump is deposed. Under Oath

“I am living for the moment to walk into that room to sit across the table from him,” Carroll told Reuters in an interview. “I think of it everyday.”

Carroll, 77, a former Elle magazine columnist, seeks unspecified damages in her lawsuit and a retraction of Trump’s statements. It is one of two defamation cases involving sexual misconduct allegations against Trump that could move forward faster now that he has left the presidency. While in office, Trump’s lawyers delayed the case in part by arguing that the pressing duties of his office made responding to civil lawsuits impossible.

“The only barrier to proceeding with the civil suits was that he’s the president,” said Jennifer Rodgers, a former federal prosecutor and now an adjunct professor of clinical law at the New York University School of Law.

“I think there will be a sense among the judges that it’s time to get a move on in these cases,” said Roberta Kaplan, Carroll’s attorney.

An attorney for Trump and another representative of the former president did not respond to requests for comment.

In an unusual report on 14 Gannett papers by six reporters from some of those same newspapers, the company that is woke on the raging issues of race and fairness overwhelmingly favors whites in pay and job security.

“Our analysis of salaries in 14 newsrooms at Gannett, the largest newspaper company in the U.S., found pay disparities among women and people of color, as well as a dearth of diversity, in nearly every location that participated,” said the report from the Newsguild, part of the Communications Workers of America union.

The chain has been a voice for diversity and equity, but some of those interviewed in the new report said the firm operates by a different code inside its offices.

In the 1870s, Hiram Rhodes Revels and Blanche Bruce, both Republicans, became the first two Black US Senators. I have to think they would be appalled to see what has been done with their legacies.

I would never call Scott an Uncle Tom. It's an insult to the character Uncle Tom, who was the opposite of Scott's buffoonery in Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 novel. While a problematic character in other ways, Tom is a man who sacrifices himself for the good of others.

But: In his unswerving devotion to party politics, Sen. Scott is an embarrassment on his own -- not just for his lies or his cavalier dismissal of systemic racism but for his pursuit of political gain at the expense of the health of our democracy.
