Democrats are on the wrong side of "another" issue!

Poll: More Americans Oppose Stricter Gun Laws Than Support Them
That’s according to a new poll from Quinnipiac, which found 49 percent of adults oppose new gun laws, compared to 46 percent of those who say they support further restrictions. The findings mark the first time since 2015 that fewer than 50 percent of voters expressed support for new restrictions to Quinnipiac pollsters. The findings are just the latest evidence of a broad shift against gun control among the American people. Last week’s poll from Gallup showed a similar drop in public support for stricter gun laws, and a recent Morning Consult poll found voters now trust Republicans more than Democrats on the issue of gun policy.
Partisan identification again proved to be a significant factor in respondents’ support for gun control. Among Democrats, 91 percent said they support stricter gun laws compared to only 13 percent of Republicans. Among Independents, 39 percent expressed support for more gun control, while 54 percent expressed opposition.

So apparently the self defense actions of Kyle Rittenhouse did not disway Americans from being against new gun laws. One might think that the outrageous behavior of the 17 year old would have made people want "more" gun control. But apparently not.

So what will the Democrats campaign on? The large BBB bill that the public is against? Railing against voter ID laws that the public is for? Perhaps they will call for more gun laws that the people are against? Raise taxes? Do things to keep gas prices higher? Almost like they do not want to win any elections?

WASHINGTON — A committee investigating the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol insurrection issued subpoenas Monday to five more individuals, including former President Donald Trump’s ally Roger Stone and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

The subpoenas include demands for documents and testimony from Stone and Jones as well as three people accused of organizing and promoting the two rallies that took place on Jan. 6.

“The Select Committee is seeking information about the rallies and subsequent march to the Capitol that escalated into a violent mob attacking the Capitol and threatening our democracy,” said Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, the Democratic chairman of the panel. “We need to know who organized, planned, paid for, and received funds related to those events, as well as what communications organizers had with officials in the White House and Congress.”

Story continues below advertisement

The subpoenas are the latest in a wide net the House panel has cast in an effort to investigate the deadly day when a group of Trump’s supporters, fueled by his false claims of a stolen election, brutally assaulted police and smashed their way into the Capitol to interrupt the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s victory.

The committee has already interviewed more than 150 people across government, social media and law enforcement, including some former Trump aides who have been cooperative. The panel has subpoenaed more than 20 witnesses, and most of them, including several associates who helped plan the massive “Stop the Steal” rally the morning of Jan. 6, have signaled they will cooperate.

I suppose she could've put Hank "Guam is gonna tip the fuck over" Johnson, on the case, but reports are in that Hank's IQ hovers right around room temperature most days.

Trump and everyone involved can breathe a sigh of relief that the dumbest fucks on the hill are on the case. Perhaps we can get a cameo appearance from Sheila Jackson Lee.

The select House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack told a federal appeals court on Monday that it urgently needs extensive records from former President Trump 's White House, arguing that more time would hinder its probe.

"Delay itself would inflict a serious constitutional injury on the Select Committee by interfering with its legislative duty. The Select Committee needs the documents now because they will shape the direction of the investigation," the panel's attorneys wrote in a filing with the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. "For example, the documents could inform which witnesses to depose and what questions to ask them, as well as whether further subpoenas should be issued to others."

Trump is appealing the case after a trial judge rejected his lawsuit to block the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) from complying with the select committee's document requests. The former president argued that the Biden administration's compliance with the congressional investigation violates his own rights to executive privilege.

A three-judge panel for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit will hear oral arguments in the case next week. The panel granted Trump a brief reprieve earlier this month by issuing a temporary injunction that delays the release of documents while an accelerated appeals process plays out.

Trump's lawyers are arguing that the committee's request is overly broad and lacks a valid legislative purpose. Last week, they urged the D.C. Circuit to overturn U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan's ruling, saying it would upend the balance of powers between the legislative and executive branches.

"The stakes in this case are high," Trump's lawyers wrote at the time. "A decision upholding the Committees’ request to NARA would have enormous consequences, forever changing the dynamics between the political branches. It is naïve to assume that the fallout will be limited to President Trump or the events of January 6, 2021. Every Congress will point to some unprecedented thing about 'this President' to justify a request for his presidential records.

"In these hyper-partisan times, Congress will increasingly and inevitably use this new weapon to perpetually harass its political rival."

On Monday, the select committee argued that the internal records, including communications among Trump's top advisers, are crucial in its effort to understand what led up to the Capitol riot and to legislate in order to protest future peaceful transfers of power.

You think that the demonstrations about the murder of George Floyd are more dangerous than invading the Capitol building and again stopping the peaceful transfer of power.

White rights.

Many or most white people, however, take white freedom for granted and are likely to deny its very existence, even as they remain extremely protective of its power. This is but one example of the lies that are central to race itself, and the transhistorical project of making and remaking whiteness.

The trial of Kyle Rittenhouse, and his acquittal on all charges, offers one of the most recent high-profile examples of how white freedom functions in America.

Last August, Rittenhouse, who was then 17 years old, traveled across state lines, armed himself with an AR-15 assault style rifle, joined forces with a local militia group and put himself in the middle of the civil disturbances caused by the police shooting of a black man named Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Rittenhouse shot three men, killing two of them, allegedly in self-defense. When he attempted to surrender to police they ignored him, and then he was cleared of all legal responsibility in a criminal trial whose judge was blatantly biased in his favor, and based on gun laws and definitions of self-defense that advantage white defendants. He is already a right-wing media star, and will likely soon become a wealthy celebrity.

Advertisement:

Consider the fact that Rittenhouse was not shot dead by the police as he walked down the street with an assault rifle, immediately after shooting three people in the street. That is an iconic illustration of white freedom's power over life and death in America. White vigilantism is perhaps the ultimate expression of white freedom.

Linda Dunikoski, the lead prosecutor against Ahmaud Arbery’s accused murderers, displays a slide on the use of deadly force during summations.

A little more than two weeks after trial began, a Georgia prosecutor slammed what she described as the “self-serving” rationalizations offered by the men charged with murdering Ahmaud Arbery. The government’s roughly 90-minute closing arguments systematically picked apart defense arguments that they tried to effectuate a citizen’s arrest within the bounds of the law.

“If you are the initial unjustified aggressor, you don’t get to claim self-defense,” Cobb County Assistant District Attorney Linda Dunikoski said during summations. “If you’re committing a felony against somebody, you don’t get to claim self-defense.”

According to the prosecutor, self-defense cannot be invoked if a defendant provokes somebody and “Then you go, ‘Oh, look, he attacked me first.'”

Paul Krugman agrees to me...

For centuries, America has invested taxpayer money in its future. Public funds built physical infrastructure, from the Erie Canal to the interstate highway system. We invested in human capital, too: Universal education came to the United States early, and America basically invented modern public secondary education. This public spending laid the foundations for prosperity and helped make us an economic superpower.

With the rise of the modern right, however, America turned its back on that history. Tax breaks — essentially giving wealthy people money and hoping that it would trickle down — became the solution to every problem.“Infrastructure week” became a punchline under Donald Trump partly because the Trump team’s proposals were more about crony capitalism than about investment, partly because Trump never showed the will to override conservatives who opposed any significant new spending.

Now Joe Biden is trying to revive the tradition of public spending oriented toward the future.

Jan. 6 defendant Pezzola remains in jail

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Dominic Pezzola, one of the local men accused in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, is staying in jail for the rest of the year. And when we mark the anniversary of the assault on the Capitol, he'll probably still be locked up.

Wednesday in federal court in Washington D.C., Judge Tim Kelly refused to reverse his decision to keep Pezzola in jail and set the next court date to Jan. 11, 2022.

Answering Pezzola's appeal to be released, Judge Kelly said Pezzola did not present anything new that would make him change his mind. Therefore, Judge Kelly said he "declined to reconsider my previous decision" to keep Pezzola in custody.

The government says Pezzola, a member of the group called The Proud Boys, was in the crowd at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and the government produced a video which it says shows Pezzola the moment when he stole a police riot shield.

Man: "You just stole a riot shield?"

Pezzola: "Yeah."

Man: "Wow."

Pezzola is accused of charging up the scaffolding stairs at the Capitol and using the shield to smash a window allowing a wave of people inside the building.

Pezzola pled not guilty.

In his argument to get out of jail, Pezzola said he couldn't get access to evidence or talk to his lawyers easily. In court Wednesday, one of his lawyers said it takes weeks to set up a conference call.

But according to NBC Washington reporter Scott McFarlane, who reports on January 6th cases daily, Pezzola has made more "granular" complaints including inmates had to "share nail clippers."

In an interview with me last month, McFarlane described Pezzola as one of the high-profile cases.

There are 45 Jan. 6 defendants in the D.C jail.

They're all together in one wing. McFarlane says the inmates call it the "patriot wing." He tweeted Pezzola is known as "Dom."

McFarlane reported a defendant from Buffalo got released from the D.C. jail Tuesday after his lawyer told the court the wing was "cult-like" with a "toxic atmosphere." The judge released Thomas Sibick, 35 years old, into the custody of his parents.
_________

Wonder why the judge is being so hard on these Jeffersonian "patriots"?

Do you guess they did something WRONG?

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

So what’s not to like about this agenda? No, it wouldn’t be inflationary: Don’t take it from me, listen to credit rating agencies, which are saying the same thing. The approved and proposed spending would be fairly small as a share of gross domestic product — which the Congressional Budget Office projects at $288 trillion over the next decade — and largely paid for with new taxes, so it would have very little inflationary impact.

Oh, and while some of the “pay-fors” are questionable — as it happens, mainly on the traditional infrastructure bill; Build Back Better is more or less paid for — which means that the spending would probably add somewhat to federal debt over the next few years, that debt increase would be small relative to G.D.P. and, given low interest rates, would barely add to debt service costs. Over the longer term, the payoff to public investment might well be enough to reduce the deficit.

Still, Republicans are denouncing the Biden agenda as socialism, because, of course, they are. Hey, by their standards America has been run by socialists for most of its history — people like DeWitt Clinton, the New York governor who built the Erie Canal, and Horace Mann, who led the Common School movement for universal basic education a couple of decades later. And don’t even get me started on Dwight Eisenhower, who presided over huge government investment and a top tax rate of 91 percent.

Admittedly, the Biden plan would reduce economic disparities, both because expanded benefits would matter more to less-affluent families and because its tax changes would be strongly progressive. But public policy that reduces inequality, like public investment, is squarely in our national tradition. America basically invented progressive taxation, and as the economist Claudia Goldin has noted, the high school movement was “rooted in egalitarianism.”

Terrorists

I just read an extensive document/detailed plan of a "patriot group" outlining how, what, when and where to gather for "events" in DC starting Jan 16 - Inauguration Day. If you've ever worked in events, you know what this type of planning is like.

They are planning to congregate at the WH, The Capitol and the Supreme Court. They want a minimum of 4,000 people at each of the 3 locations. They will close off all entrances to these buildings, and will "guard" the front doors of each building, restricting access. They will not allow Mr. Biden or other Democrats to enter any of these buildings. They will only allow movement for Trump, his minions and Republicans. They will be armed. They are instructed not to create violence, but if one shot rings out, then they will start all-out civil war (their words).

I am not sharing this to scare you, although it is scary, but to inform and itemize some of the stuff going on out there on the so-called "dark web," although I read it in a FB post. I chose not to share the document, for obvious reasons.

Whether this shit is "real" or not, it provides a very clear picture of the multiple dangers to our democracy. Reach out to your congressional delegation. Congress needs to be unified against this terrorism, sedition and treason.

Yesterday I read that "treason" can only be legally defined if it is done in the context of war. Here it is. For me, I make no bones about the treason of any Congressman/Congresswoman who is prevaricating about and/or downplaying the seriousness of what happened on Wednesday.

I don't believe I am sharing "fake news." Be vigilant and careful with your thinking. These people are not "patriots." They are dangerous terrorists.

WASHINGTON, Aug 20 (Reuters) - The FBI has found scant evidence that the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was the result of an organized plot to overturn the presidential election result, according to four current and former law enforcement officials.

Though federal officials have arrested more than 570 alleged participants, the FBI at this point believes the violence was not centrally coordinated by far-right groups or prominent supporters of then-President Donald Trump, according to the sources, who have been either directly involved in or briefed regularly on the wide-ranging investigations.

"Ninety to ninety-five percent of these are one-off cases," said a former senior law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation. "Then you have five percent, maybe, of these militia groups that were more closely organized. But there was no grand scheme with Roger Stone and Alex Jones and all of these people to storm the Capitol and take hostages."

Pezzola allegedly bragged about the criminal activities afterward and stated along with others that he “would have killed anyone they got their hands on, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Michael Pence,” the release states, citing the allegations in the affidavit.

True, he did not say shoot, he said if he could have gotten his hands on them.

I had an uncle, a trained Marine (Pezolla was also in a branch of the service) who survived Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and Korea (though wounded there), and once, post WWII, in an altercation with a man, warned him that he could kill him with his bare hands because he had been trained how to do it.

But keep on dancing and lying, Ch. You always do.

The Democrats allowed the attack last night. They are terrorists.
On November 21, 2021, at 4:15 P.M., the residents of the quiet Milwaukee suburb Waukesha, Wisconsin were enjoying their annual Christmas parade.  Local politicians, high school and grammar school marching bands and dance groups, were walking down their main thoroughfare in celebration of the beginning of the Christmas season, when, without warning, a criminal drove a red Ford Escape through the crowd, barreling along, blowing his horn, hitting countless innocents from behind.  Dozens of adults and small children alike were rushed to local hospitals; the number dead on the scene has not been released as of this writing.

Unbelievable.  Unforgivable.  Inexplicable horror.

The alleged perpetrator is known; the motive, however, is in doubt.  Darrell Brooks, a 38-year-old rapper with a long rap sheet, is the alleged driver of the vehicle.

Early reports point to two possibilities: either he did this on purpose, as an intentional terror attack, or he and his cronies were fleeing an earlier crime — reportedly a stabbing — and he made the horrible choice of this particular road — at this particular, rare moment, a parade path — as his escape route.

So he may be a terrorist, or he may not be.  Either way, he has destroyed the lives of countless families; he has inflicted terror.

But he's still not the worst kind of domestic terrorist.

Why was he out on the street today?

Why was he free to drive down that road at all?

We mentioned that he has a long rap sheet.  Darrell Brooks's rap sheet includes — in addition to past convictions — multiple open cases.  His 22-year-long published criminal record includes numerous weapons charges, battery and assault charges, all kinds of drug charges from meth to cocaine, vehicle theft, receiving stolen property, obstructing officers, domestic abuse, recklessly endangering safety, strangulation, and suffocation...the list goes on and on.

Again and again, Darrell Brooks — the alleged driver in the Waukesha parade killings — was caught, processed, and intentionally released.  Despite a history that demonstrates his ongoing threat to the community, charges were repeatedly dropped or pleaded down, sentences were reduced to time served (such as, in one case, just nineteen days), and he was always given work release, probation, and bail, despite a record of continuing to perpetrate violations whenever he was set free.

If bail protocols were rational, he would be in jail awaiting the trials for the cases he already had pending, including felony assault just two days before the parade, after which he was, once again, arrested and released on bail.

He was free today to kill people in Waukesha only because he was set free, knowingly, by Milwaukee and Manitowoc and Wood and who knows how many other counties over the past twenty years.

We have state's attorneys and district attorneys all over America who refuse to prosecute most crimes...who refuse to ask judges for stiff sentences when they do prosecute...who happily plea-bargain cases down, down, down until they get an easy conviction, even if that easy conviction provides such a small penalty that it barely takes the criminal off the street at all.

This is not to say that plea bargains and sentencing flexibility don't have their place in our system; they do.  But such reasonable tools are abused in the hands of leftist bureaucrats who simply don't want to put criminals in jail and who will find any excuse to keep them out.

In addition, in recent years, we have watched in horror as governor after governor has flung open the prison gates for mass releases, for reasons as lunatic as claims of overcrowding, fear of COVID contagion, and even budget pressures.

Some things are still unknown about the Waukesha Christmas Parade horror, just as some things are still unknown about all the Antifa/BLM riots that have plagued us in recent years.

But there is a common thread.

The violent criminals who started dumpster fires in Kenosha; who launched shopping district break-ins in Naperville; and who perpetrated literal neighborhood takeovers in Portland, Seattle, and so many more cities in 2020 were rarely first offenders.

We are told that it is hard to obtain a conviction, even when criminals are plainly guilty.  Sometimes that is true.  But even so, there are tens of thousands of violent criminals whom our system has managed to catch, has managed to prosecute, and has managed to convict.  There is no reason why they should be out on the street while they're still young enough to re-offend.

It is on the state's attorneys and district attorneys, the judges, and too often the governors as well.

There is only one reason why crime is so high in America today, only one reason why so many known criminals are on the streets, free to rob, rape, brutalize, and murder.

It is that leftist politicians — elected by their constituents to keep the streets safe; that's their primary responsibility — have sided with the criminal element, time and again, against the law-abiding citizenry.

And that is a worse crime than any other: that the people we have entrusted with the solemn duty of protecting their communities have instead unleashed these criminals to terrorize those communities instead.

If you're looking for the worst kind of domestic terrorism, I sure can't think of a worse one than flinging open the prison gates — whether by lack of effort or by executive order — and consciously setting such criminals loose.

An Indiana man charged with carrying a loaded firearm to the Capitol on Jan. 6 told investigators that if he had found Speaker Nancy Pelosi, “you’d be here for another reason,” according to court documents posted over the weekend.

Mark Mazza, 56, is the latest of about half a dozen Jan. 6 defendants charged with bringing a gun to the Capitol. In this case, Mazza allegedly carried a Taurus revolver known as “The Judge,” which is capable of firing shotgun shells — two of which were in the chamber, along with three hollow-point bullets. A Capitol Police sergeant obtained the weapon after allegedly fending off an assault from Mazza.

According to the charging documents in the case, two Capitol Police investigators visited Mazza at his home in Shelbyville, Ind., on March 29, and he admitted attending the Jan. 6 “Stop the Steal” rally and later marched with the crowd to the Capitol. Camera footage shows Mazza present during the most intense hand-to-hand violence of the day in the Capitol’s lower West terrace tunnel.

“I thought Nan and I would hit it off,” Mazza told investigators as they prepared to finish their interview. “I was glad I didn’t because you’d be here for another reason and I told my kids that if they show up, I’m surrendering, nope they can have me, because I may go down a hero.”

Though reports of rioters charged with carrying firearms have been limited, the number has been steadily climbing. A former DEA agent brandished his service weapon outside the Capitol. A Texas man was charged with bringing a handgun as well. Leaders of the Oath Keepers charged with conspiring to prevent Congress from certifying the 2020 election aren’t facing firearms charges, but prosecutors have pieced together evidence suggesting they kept a stockpile of weapons at a hotel in nearby Arlington, Va.

The mounting evidence has undercut claims by former President Donald Trump and his allies like you Scott asshole that the mob attacking the Capitol was unarmed. In addition to the growing number of firearms authorities suspect were carried onto Capitol grounds, rioters brought knives, axes, batons, tasers, bats, poles and even a crutch and hockey stick. Others stole police shields and used metal barricades and furniture as makeshift weapons.

Mazza is facing charges of obstructing Congress and the FBI investigation of the Jan. 6 attack, as well as carrying a firearm on Capitol grounds and obstructing police, as well as a D.C. code violation for bringing an unlicensed firearm into the city.

The Capitol Police sergeant who obtained Mazza’s gun at first struggled to identify him when shown pictures — instead identifying a younger-looking man with similar facial features. He admitted he was uncertain of his assailant’s identity in part because he was wearing a hat.

Although the charging documents describe repeated efforts by Mazza to help break the police line — from engaging in a collective push to overwhelm the officers to swinging a baton he obtained at officers — there’s also another odd twist in his case.

Investigators say that when two officers were pulled into the crowd of rioters from the tunnel — including D.C. police officer Michael Fanone — Mazza appeared to intervene and possibly seek to “thwart other rioters from attacking the officers.
James we have proven correct, repeatedly that he is a fucking liar.

The U.S. has been added to an annual list of “backsliding” democracies for the first time, with the intergovernmental organization behind the analysis citing election disinformation, voter disenchantment and the coronavirus pandemic among the reasons for the decline.

The report released Monday by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, based in Sweden, finds that the U.S. has fallen “victim to authoritarian tendencies” in recent years with this decline following a larger five-year trend seen globally.

“More than two-thirds of the world’s population now live in backsliding democracies or autocratic regimes,” states the Global State of Democracy (GSoD Indices) report, which was first launched in 2016. “The world is becoming more authoritarian as non-democratic regimes become even more brazen in their repression.”

Thousands demonstrate in Cologne, Germany, in 2020 against racism and the murder of a Black man, George Floyd, by police in Minneapolis in the U.S.. Floyd's death led to Black Lives Matter protests in many countries and across America.

ASSOCIATED PRESS

The report says that democratic backsliding is often a gradual process that ends with either the democracy breaking down or it returning to normal health. This takes an average of nine years from the onset of backsliding, it said.

Globally, the report found that election results have become more contested, even when the elections were found to be largely free and fair. The report cites former President Donald Trump’s questioning of the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election results as “a historic turning point” in this growing theme that has damaged public trust in elections.

“Trump’s baseless allegations during the 2020 US presidential election have had spillover effects, including in Brazil, Mexico, Myanmar and Peru, among others,” the report states. “Baseless allegations of electoral fraud and related disinformation undermined fundamental trust in the electoral process, which culminated in the storming of the US Capitol building in January 2021.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Related, the GSoD Indices noted a decline in “clean elections” in the U.S. since 2015. Clean elections are defined in the report as ones that are free, lack evidence of voting irregularities and government intimidation, and where there’s fair electoral competition. Similar declines were seen in Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Hungary, India, Mauritius, Namibia and Poland, according to the report.

Political activism was also found to have dropped in the U.S., with the report blaming voter disenchantment and an increasing perception that governments are failing to address people’s social and economic needs. Supporting this negative perception, the report cited some states’ voter registration and voting access laws, ones either recently enacted or under discussion, which have been found to disproportionately harm minorities’ right to vote. Such controversial laws have recently gained approval in Texas, Georgia, Arizona and Florida.

The report also says the coronavirus pandemic has harmed democratic rights globally. The uneven global distribution of COVID-19 vaccines along with the rise in vaccine misinformation has not only prolonged the health crisis but has normalized restrictions on basic freedoms, the report states.

In the U.S., the report pointed to incidents at the start of the pandemic in which doctors and medical staff were ordered not to speak to journalists about shortages in personal protective equipment and other dire working conditions or they’d face termination. Elsewhere in the world, people have faced criminal prosecution if they shared pandemic disinformation, and military forces were used to enforce compliance with pandemic-related rules.

On the flip side, the report found that many democratic countries learned to adapt and continue to practice fair elections despite such exceedingly challenging conditions.

“They rapidly activated special voting arrangements to allow citizens to continue exercising their democratic rights,” the report states.

I’m going to piss off a lot of people, so here goes.

Kyle Rittenhouse is a murderer.

Let me start by saying I am in no way a legal expert. I have never taken a constitutional law course. I have never tried a case in criminal or civil court. Hell, I didn’t even watch the trial from gavel to gavel, as one friend of mine put it.

I also got some of the material parts of the case wrong:

- Kyle Rittenhouse did have connections to Kenosha, Wisconsin. His father lived there and he had a job there.
- He was not, under Illinois state law, forbidden from open carrying a weapon. Due to the barrel length of the weapon, he could legally open carry as long as he was 16 or older.
- Rittenhouse worked in Kenosha and had stayed at his friend’s house the night before. He also had the rifle at the same friend’s house – therefore he did not transport a weapon across state lines.
- Rittenhouse idolized the police, and saw himself as doing his job that night, protecting private property and his father’s community from violent rioters.

However, this information makes what he did that much more horrible.
- Rittenhouse violated the stated curfew in Kenosha that night. August 25th, Kenosha was under a 7pm-7am curfew under a judge’s order. In his defense, everyone else who was out that night also violated curfew, and the cops let him – and them.
- He illegally purchased the weapon he used that night. Under Federal law, you have to be 18 to purchase any firearm; if someone purchases a gun for you, that is known as a “straw purchase” and is also illegal under Federal law.
- He is a high school dropout who claimed to be a Medic. He had no formal EMT training.
- There are multiple videos that have shown Rittenhouse’s violent tendencies. A video taken two weeks before the shooting showed Rittenhouse wishing he had an AR to be able to shoot protesters. A video from a few weeks before, in July, shows Rittenhouse allegedly punching a girl in the back and the back of the head.
- Rittenhouse’s first victim threw a plastic bag at him and chased him. He was shot four times, once in the side of the head, once in the back.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

- His second victim saw him shoot the first and thought he was dealing with an active shooter situation, so he tried to disarm what he assumed was a violent shooter. He grabbed Rittenhouse’s weapon in one hand and hit him with the skateboard in the other. Rittenhouse fired once, shooting him in the stomach. He died from the wound. His third victim, an actual medic, pointed his gun at Rittenhouse in what he too thought was self-defense. He lost 80% of his bicep for his trouble.
- Rittenhouse was not protecting property that belonged to him, his family, or anyone else he was connected to. He was not asked to be there. He was specifically ordered NOT to be there by the judge who put the curfew in place.

The simple fact of the matter is that the law says what Rittenhouse did is legal. However, at the risk of violating Godwin’s Law, just because something is legal doesn’t mean it’s moral or ethical. Nazis were legal. Resisting them was not. Killing Jews was legal. Hiding them was not. Abortion, while a legal medical procedure, ends a potential life and is morally and ethically questionable for many people.

The simple fact of the matter is that no one – NO ONE – got shot or killed that night EXCEPT the three people Rittenhouse shot.

The simple fact of the matter is that Rittenhouse intentionally put himself in a situation where he might have to use deadly force. He knew that going in. He was eager for it. He created the very situation where he needed to defend himself. You don’t get to claim self-defense when you create the very situation where you need to defend yourself. You don’t get to provoke the situation and then claim self-defense from that provocation.

What Rittenhouse did was, according to the 12-person jury in Illinois, not a crime. But what he did was not moral or ethical. And when you celebrate what Rittenhouse did, when you elevate vigilantism and provocation, when you implicitly say that property is worth more than human lives, that says more about you than it does about Rittenhouse.

I will not engage with those who choose to defend Rittenhouse. I will not argue. I will not defend my opinion. You are welcome to yours. Don't like mine? Feel free to scroll on past.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Prosecutors concluded their case against the three men charged in the killing of Ahmaud Arbery by beseeching jurors to find them guilty on the facts, and not because they are “good or bad” people.

“Nobody gets a free pass,” said Linda Dunikoski, the lead prosecutor, adding that the case was “about holding people accountable and responsible for their actions.”

Over roughly two hours on Tuesday, the prosecution reasserted its case against the three defendants — Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael and William Bryan — and portrayed them as aggressive actors who took matters into their own hands in chasing, confronting and ultimately killing Mr. Arbery.

“This is what we get,” Ms. Dunikoski said, “driveway decisions and assumptions, right here.”

She argued that Gregory McMichael had tried to control the narrative at the crime scene, telling his son, “You had no choice.” Mr. McMichael also drove a truck away while a crime technician was still at the scene of the shooting. He also called Mr. Arbery “an asshole.”

“Malice, right there,” Ms. Dunikoski said of Mr. McMichael’s behavior. “That’s how you know, right there.”

She also repeated Mr. McMichael’s statement that Mr. Arbery was “trapped like a rat,” saying that it was an acknowledgment of false imprisonment.

Ms. Dunikoski challenged the claims by the defense that the men felt as though they were under threat and were responding to a crime. The evidence, she said, did not support that portrayal. A neighbor who called the authorities about Mr. Arbery’s presence dialed a nonemergency police number and not 911, she said, because he did not think Mr. Arbery’s presence constituted an emergency.

Instead, she said, the men had assumed the worst about Mr. Arbery and operated based on those assumptions, not facts.

“They chose to confront him,” Ms. Dunikoski said. “They didn’t need to. They didn’t have to.”

Mr. Arbery, she said, had no obligation to follow the men’s commands to stop. She asked jurors to look at the situation from Mr. Arbery’s perspective. If anyone could look at it as fearful and life-threatening, she said, it was Mr. Arbery and not the McMichaels.

“He was trying to get away from these strangers who were yelling at him — yelling at him, threatening to kill him,” Ms. Dunikoski said. “And then they killed him.”
