U.S. President Joe Biden is expected to announce Tuesday that the country will tap into strategic oil reserves to help offset a surge in gasoline prices, a senior administration official told ABC News.

An Indiana man charged with carrying a loaded firearm to the Capitol on Jan. 6 told investigators that if he had found Speaker Nancy Pelosi, “you’d be here for another reason,” according to court documents posted over the weekend.
Mark Mazza, 56, is the latest of about half a dozen Jan. 6 defendants charged with bringing a gun to the Capitol. In this case, Mazza allegedly carried a Taurus revolver known as “The Judge,” which is capable of firing shotgun shells — two of which were in the chamber, along with three hollow-point bullets. A Capitol Police sergeant obtained the weapon after allegedly fending off an assault from Mazza.
According to the charging documents in the case, two Capitol Police investigators visited Mazza at his home in Shelbyville, Ind., on March 29, and he admitted attending the Jan. 6 “Stop the Steal” rally and later marched with the crowd to the Capitol. Camera footage shows Mazza present during the most intense hand-to-hand violence of the day in the Capitol’s lower West terrace tunnel.
“I thought Nan and I would hit it off,” Mazza told investigators as they prepared to finish their interview. “I was glad I didn’t because you’d be here for another reason and I told my kids that if they show up, I’m surrendering, nope they can have me, because I may go down a hero.”
Though reports of rioters charged with carrying firearms have been limited, the number has been steadily climbing. A former DEA agent brandished his service weapon outside the Capitol. A Texas man was charged with bringing a handgun as well. Leaders of the Oath Keepers charged with conspiring to prevent Congress from certifying the 2020 election aren’t facing firearms charges, but prosecutors have pieced together evidence suggesting they kept a stockpile of weapons at a hotel in nearby Arlington, Va.
The mounting evidence has undercut claims by former President Donald Trump and his allies that the mob attacking the Capitol was unarmed. In addition to the growing number of firearms authorities suspect were carried onto Capitol grounds, rioters brought knives, axes, batons, tasers, bats, poles and even a crutch and hockey stick. Others stole police shields and used metal barricades and furniture as makeshift weapons.

The Biden administration is expected to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserves in coordination with other nations in the coming days in a bid to tamp down the recent increase in gasoline prices, people familiar with the effort said Monday.
The U.S. release is expected to be between 30 million and 35 million barrels and would be carried out over time, one of the people said. The administration is currently trying to coordinate concurrent releases with foreign governments, including those in China and Japan, a process that has complicated the timing for an announcement, two of the people added.
Even if the Biden administration does not release oil from the SPR immediately, budget legislation passed by Congress both in 2015 and 2018 mandates SPR releases in 2022.
President Joe Biden and his administration have prodded oil producing countries in OPEC+ to open their taps further to help ease world oil prices that are contributing to inflation. OPEC has so far not publicly said it will do so, though it acknowledged in its November report that high prices may be threatening the current global economic rebound.
One person familiar with the White House's thinking said the administration had not made a final decision to release the oil, and that U.S. officials were hoping the threat of an SPR release would persuade OPEC and Russia to increase their export quotas beyond the recent decision to allow another 400,000 barrels per day to come onto the market.
Oil prices have eased modestly since hitting a seven-year high of $84 a barrel in mid-October. Experts attribute the rise in prices to the rebound in global demand as countries steadily reopen their economies after the pandemic eroded demand. But so far oil producers, including companies in the U.S., have been wary of drilling for new supplies because of uncertainty around the economic outlook.
That's helped drive gasoline prices above $3.40 a gallon, up about 60 percent a year ago, but off the seven-year peaks seen earlier this month.

Replenishing the Strategic Petroleum Reserve -- as proposed by some oil lobbyists earlier this week in light of the collapse in prices -- would enable the government to take as much as 77 million barrels off the world market.
Oil prices jumped after Trump’s announcement, paring their worst weekly performance since 2008. Still, the purchases are unlikely to be able to offset the supply boost major producers such as Russia and Saudi Arabia have promised in the coming month.

The Biden administration is expected to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserves in coordination with other nations in the coming days in a bid to tamp down the recent increase in gasoline prices, people familiar with the effort said Monday.
The U.S. release is expected to be between 30 million and 35 million barrels and would be carried out over time, one of the people said. The administration is currently trying to coordinate concurrent releases with foreign governments, including those in China and Japan, a process that has complicated the timing for an announcement, two of the people added.

Even if the Biden administration does not release oil from the SPR immediately, budget legislation passed by Congress both in 2015 and 2018 mandates SPR releases in 2022.
President Joe Biden and his administration have prodded oil producing countries in OPEC+ to open their taps further to help ease world oil prices that are contributing to inflation. OPEC has so far not publicly said it will do so, though it acknowledged in its November report that high prices may be threatening the current global economic rebound.
One person familiar with the White House's thinking said the administration had not made a final decision to release the oil, and that U.S. officials were hoping the threat of an SPR release would persuade OPEC and Russia to increase their export quotas beyond the recent decision to allow another 400,000 barrels per day to come onto the market.

SHINGTON (Bloomberg) --President Donald Trump told U.S. energy officials to purchase “large amounts” of oil to fill up the nation’s emergency reserve after the biggest price crash in a generation.
Replenishing the Strategic Petroleum Reserve -- as proposed by some oil lobbyists earlier this week in light of the collapse in prices -- would enable the government to take as much as 77 million barrels off the world market.
Oil prices jumped after Trump’s announcement, paring their worst weekly performance since 2008. Still, the purchases are unlikely to be able to offset the supply boost major producers such as Russia and Saudi Arabia have promised in the coming month.
