I would like to point out that generally speaking Presidents garner a small bump shortly after a state of the union address. Generally Presidents see a bigger bump  (most of the time a substantial bump) when we get involved with military action. When you make a state of the union address during a stressful national crisis that possibly involves military action, one might suspect a bump of the substantial nature.

Obviously we are not in any sort of military conflict (at least not yet) but the Russia Ukraine war has certainly unified people in a similar fashion. However if recent polling is telling us anything,  it is that it's probably going to take more than some world events and a speech to bring President Biden back to life.

Trump not invited to 'secretive' think tank conference with GOP mega-donors: report

Tom Boggioni

March 07, 2022

According to a report from CBS News, a "private, off-the-record" conservative conference that brings together policy-makers with GOP megadonors has skipped over inviting Donald Trump and will instead feature critics of the former president as well as a highly-placed advisor to President Joe Biden.

As Robert Costa wrote, the conservative American Enterprise Institute's annual World Forum is headed to an exclusive Georgia resort this week and invitees include some of the Republican Party's biggest donors who will engage in "invite-only discussions."

The report notes that the Center for Public Integrity has dubbed the gathering a "secretive" event "where industry titans and GOP megadonors [mingle] with mostly Republican power players at an exclusive, 'off-the-record' retreat."

"While the nonpartisan — but historically conservative — group has previously supported aspects of Trump's agenda, many of its scholars have become critics of the former president, particularly after he refused to concede defeat in the 2020 presidential election," Costa reported before adding, " This year's guest list also underscores how some leaders inside the establishment wing of the Republican Party and their allies on the right are increasingly eager to move on from Trump and loosen his grip on the conservative movement."

Of note, he points out, is that this year's slate of speakers includes Democrats and contenders for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination -- but not Trump.

In a media briefing Monday, Mr. Zelensky called for a new package of sanctions and an embargo on Russian oil. “You can call this an embargo,” he said. “Or you can call this just morality, when you refuse to give money to a terrorist. Let the war feed them.”

The White House said an embargo was under consideration, causing oil prices to soar above $135 a barrel on global markets.

Mr. Putin spoke Monday with the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, asserting—contrary to evidence of deadly Russian attacks on civilians in Ukraine—that the Russian military was taking steps to save civilian lives, and accusing Kyiv of obstructing those efforts, according to the Kremlin’s account of the phone call.

Outside Kyiv, Russian forces shot and killed Yuri Prylypko, the mayor of Hostomel, and two people who were helping him distribute food and medicine, according to the local government’s Facebook page. Hostomel was the site of fierce fighting in the war’s early days.

In Kharkiv, near the Russian border, Russia intensified attacks on civilian targets, pressing to subdue a city, Ukraine’s second largest, that remains in Ukrainian control after days of fierce bombardment.

Russia’s concentrated strikes on civilian sites overnight in Kharkiv killed eight people and set more than 20 buildings ablaze, emergency services said. A Ukrainian counteroffensive retook a town on the outskirts of the city, with Ukrainian officials saying two Russian colonels were killed in the operation.

Biden’s Approval Rating Jumps 8 Points After State Of The Union, With Strong Support Of Handling Of Ukraine Crisis

TOPLINE
President Joe Biden’s approval rating has rebounded after hitting record lows in recent months, with a new NPR/Marist poll finding the share of Americans who approve of the president has risen eight percentage points following his State of the Union address while a majority support his response to the crisis in Ukraine.

The poll, conducted March 1-2 among 1,322 U.S. adults, found 47% of respondents approved of Biden, up from 39% last week.

The bump, recorded right after Biden’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday, is “unusual” for a president––NPR notes there have only been six instances since 1978 in which a president’s approval rating has gone up by more than four points after the speech.

Well now, you see, Ch put too much weight on a Rasmussen poll which has consistently shorted Biden.

Doctor Fauci and President Biden have gaslighted Newsmax economic lollipop

Let me add some personal details to the largest corporate media scandal of the year: I have been contacted by a whistleblower inside Newsmax who has confirmed the broad details of this story. That insider confirms: Newsmax executives agreed to take the money from Biden's Health and Human Services (HHS) to push only positive coverage of the new COVID vaccines.

Let me add another personal detail: I was contacted by top Newsmax executives and told to halt any negative coverage of the vaccines in 2021. I was told that "it was problematic" for Newsmax. I was given some version of this warning multiple times by multiple executives. Obviously, I did not heed their advice.

Of course, almost everyone else employed in the corporate media did keep their mouths shut. I discussed the outright ban on negative vaccine coverage with other Newsmax producers and top anchors at the time, and they were aware that they could not provide negative coverage of the news vaccines without repercussions from the network. I was contacted by PR experts who worked with Newsmax and was told that medical experts and doctors who might say negative things about the new vaccines would not be booked as guests at all.

In other words, the Biden Administration's money did not just pay for pro-vaccine advertising at outlets like Fox and Newsmax: it paid for an outright ban on any negative coverage. There's a word for that kind of thing, and the word is: propaganda. Corporate news executives with no medical training and no expertise began to make ludicrous announcements that were basically blanket endorsements of the deadly and untested vaccines.

I find this amusing ..

Putin has alienated some of his top Russian officials since the early stages of the Ukraine invasion: report

According to Russian journalist Farida Rustamova, Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine has alienated some of his top military officials, causing them to grow increasingly worried as the Russian military continues to meet fierce resistance of Ukrainians.

"In reality, the attitude toward the war within the corridors of power is ambiguous," Rustamova wrote. "I came to this conclusion after speaking with several members of parliament and officials at various levels. Many of them are discouraged, frightened, and are making apocalyptic forecasts."

"No one is rejoicing," a source described as "close to the Kremlin" said Rustamova, whose words were translated by Ilya Lozovsky. "Many understand that this is a mistake, but in the course of doing their duty they come up with explanations in order to somehow come to terms with it."

"Some officials aren't associating themselves with what's happening at all, viewing Putin's decision as a historical choice over which they have no influence, and the meaning of which no one will understand for a some time to come," Rustamova wrote.

Insider reports that another source claims that Kremlin officials are "carefully enunciating the word clusterf*ck" when describing the invasion.

According to Rustamova, only Putin's "narrowest circle" are fully informed of his plans in Ukraine.

"For example, the head of the presidential administration Anton Vaino, whose role, unlike his more influential predecessors, is more akin to a private secretary, is not informed about such decisions, my sources say," Rustamova writes.

New numbers show Russia set to take a 'shellacking' if they enter major Ukrainian cities: retired generalJen Psaki schools Peter Doocy on gas prices: 'Let me give you the facts, I know that can be inconvenient'Russia expert says Putin's invasion of Ukraine will soon be 'unsustainable'

Info wars libertarian on steroids.

President Biden’s “maskless” State of the Union signifies the near-end of the COVID tyranny we have lived under for the past two years. Fortunately for Congress, the President, and the Federal Reserve, the Ukraine-Russia conflict is replacing COVID as a ready-made excuse for their failures and a justification for expanding their power.

Even before politicians began declaring the end of the pandemic, polls showed that rising prices were the people’s top concern – particularly the increase in gas prices. Since Russia is one of the world’s leading energy producers, sanctions imposed on Russia, as well as Germany’s decision (made under pressure from the US) to shut down the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, provide a convenient excuse for rising gas prices. This is the case even though the US, citing the “instability” in world energy markets created by the Russian-Ukraine conflict, has yet to officially ban imports of Russian oil.

The Federal Reserve has been planning several interest rate increases this year, even though some fear that rate increases could decrease growth and increase unemployment. The Russian crisis allows the Fed to either postpone rate increases or blame Russia for any unemployment that accompanies the rate increases. Either way, the Fed can use the crisis to deflect attention away from its responsibility for our economic problems. As of now, it appears the Fed will go through with at least a modest rate increase this month, but because of the Ukraine crisis, the increase will be smaller than previously expected.

The Ukraine crisis also provides an excuse for Congress to do what Congress does best: increase federal spending. President Biden has requested Congress provide an additional $10 billion in emergency military aid to Ukraine. Congress will likely quickly approve the President’s request. This will not likely be the last time Congress rushes billions of “emergency” money to Ukraine.

It is also certain that lobbyists for the military-industrial-complex are already “explaining” to a very receptive Capitol Hill audience why the Ukraine crisis justifies increasing the military budget to “counter the threats” from Russia, China, and whoever else can serve as a convenient boogeyman. It is unlikely there will be much resistance in Congress to a further increase, even though the US already spends more than the combined defense budgets of the next nine biggest spending countries.

Over the past two years, many leading Internet companies did the government’s bidding by “de-platforming” anyone who expressed skepticism of vaccines or promoted alternative treatments — even when they presented evidence to support their claims. These companies are once again helping the government by de-platforming those who question, or are suspected of questioning, the official narrative regarding Ukraine. Yet these companies’ concerns with “fake news” have not led them to stop people from sharing widely debunked stories supporting the US-backed Ukrainian government.

The lockdown and mandates did more harm than the coronavirus itself. They were based on lies promoted by the government and its allies in the “private” sector. Yet too many Americans refuse to even question the US government’s claims regarding the Ukraine crisis or question whether Russia is really responsible for our economic problems as opposed to a spendthrift Congress, successive spendthrift Presidents, and an out-of-control Federal Reserve. The only way to stop authoritarians from using crises like these to grow their power is to make enough people understand a simple truth: authoritarian politicians will always lie to the people to protect and increase their own power.

This article first appeared at RonPaulInstitute.org.

So, in addition to a growing percentage of voters who believe Biden’s cognitive acuity is not equal to the requirements of his office, there is bipartisan concern in Congress that this is probably dangerous. If you go back and objectively analyze Biden’s performance during last Tuesday’s SOTU, it will be difficult to avoid the same conclusion. Don’t bother to read the bowdlerized version posted on the White House website. His staff has clearly revised the text in a way that renders his weird digressions and ad lib maundering far more coherent than they were during the live speech. It must be seen and heard on video to be believed.

Perhaps the scariest thing Biden said involved his closing exhortation. The revised White House version renders it thus: “Go get ’em.” That is still incoherent in the context, and it’s inaccurate. Listen carefully to his closing. He clearly said, “Go get him.” Why is this scary? It’s probably an example of echolalia, the involuntary repetition of a phrase heard by someone suffering from dementia. This will be familiar to many Americans caring for aging parents in the midst of cognitive decline. Biden probably overheard a Secret Service supervisor alerting his detail that the speech was ending — and he reflexively repeated the words.

Whether or not that theory is true, it’s impossible for an objective auditor to come away from Biden’s first SOTU still believing he is mentally sound. He is a clear and present danger to the country and indeed the world. It’s probable, for example, that Putin decided to execute a full-scale invasion of Ukraine after closely observing Biden’s obvious limitations. It’s terrifying to contemplate the consequences of leaving him in office for three more years. The damage can be reduced if the GOP takes control of Congress after the midterms, but Biden and his executive branch bureaucrats can still do a lot of harm. I guess there’s always prayer.

American households slammed their wallets shut in January.

Total borrowing by households increased $6.8 billion from the prior month after a revised $22.4 billion gain in December, the Federal Reserve said Monday. Compared with a year ago, consumer credit is up 1.9 percent.

This was a far slower expansion than the $21.5 billion forecast by economists surveyed by Econoday.

Revolving credit, which is primarily comprised of credit cards, declined $218.7 million, the first drop since April. The more stable category of non-revolving credit, primarily auto and student loans, rose $7.1 billion.

Consumer credit is closely watched by economists because expansions of consumer credit tend to lead to expansions of overall economic activity. That’s because credit use rises when consumers are optimistic about their economic prospects.

The figures for January are all the more striking because they are not adjusted for inflation. Prices in January were up 7.5 percent compared with a year ago, which means real consumer credit fell significantly from a year ago. Compared with December, consumer prices rose 0.6 percent.

Gerrymandering was suffered a stroke

The U.S. Supreme Court refused on Monday to intervene in redistricting disputes in North Carolina and Pennsylvania ahead of the 2022 midterm elections. In both cases the Republican state legislature sought to block decisions issued by state supreme courts in both states based on the respective state constitutions.

Within the last month, state courts in both North Carolina and Pennsylvania drew new congressional district maps after after finding their state legislatures failed to adopt plans that met state constitutional and statutory requirements. Republican-aligned groups then asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the state court decisions and adopt a newly advanced — and some say radical — theory, that would bar state supreme courts from ruling on election disputes involving federal offices.

On Monday, the court declined both of those challenges, a relief to voting rights advocates, but likely only a temporary reprieve.

A novel legal argument

The argument goes like this: The U.S. Constitution's election clause says that the "Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof." They read that clause as meaning that only state legislatures may make election rules, unless the federal government passes contrary legislation.

Sponsor Message

Under this theory, any state court decision requiring the redrawing of state legislative maps is unconstitutional under the federal constitution. That is a dramatically different understanding than has ever been adopted by the Supreme Court. The high court has time and again deferred to state courts as interpreters of state constitutions and state laws, though the seeds of the independent state legislature theory were arguably sowed by three conservative three justices in Bush v. Gore, the case in which the Supreme Court decided the 2000 election in favor of President George W. Bush.

That said, it is was the words of the modern day conservative majority's that drove voting rights groups into state court in the first place. In 2019, the Supreme Court ruled that federal courts may not intervene to prevent partisan gerrymandering of congressional districts. But the decision, written by Chief Justice John Roberts, said explicitly that state courts may enforce limits on gerrymandering under state constitutional and statutory provisions. The Pennsylvania and North Carolina supreme courts then ruled that partisan gerrymandering is unconstitutional under their respective state constitutions.

Nonetheless, in litigation surrounding the 2020 elections a year later, conservative Justices Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh signaled their strong interest in the independent state legislature theory. And yet, on Monday the justices ducked the question, at least for now.

The court system has been saving our country from Trump and the big lie.

The Supreme Court on Monday refused separate requests from Republicans in North Carolina and Pennsylvania to block new congressional maps approved by courts in those states, meaning the fall elections will be held in districts more favorable to Democrats than the ones created by the GOP-led legislatures.
North Carolina’s Republican leaders had asked the high court to embrace an unprecedented theory that the state’s judiciary could not impose a new map for congressional elections, even though it found the legislature’s version had violated the state’s guarantee of free and fair elections. The U.S. Constitution, they argued, leaves that question in the hands of the legislature, not courts.
Three of the court’s conservatives said they were anxious to consider such an argument. But a fourth who also expressed interest said it was too close to the election to upend planning for primaries.
In the Pennsylvania case, the court turned down a request to intervene in the state supreme court’s decision to impose a map after the Democratic governor vetoed a map passed by the legislature, which is controlled by Republicans. The challenge was brought by Republican voters and candidates.
North Carolina is a purple state, with a legislature controlled by Republicans, a Democratic governor and an elected state supreme court with four Democrats and three Republicans. Donald Trump won the state in 2020 by a 50 to 49 percent margin over Joe Biden.
The four Democrats on the state supreme court said the redistricting maps passed by the legislature after the 2020 Census had a partisan tilt “not explained by the political geography of North Carolina.”
The court concluded the maps “are unconstitutional beyond a reasonable doubt under the free elections clause, the equal protection clause, the free speech clause, and the freedom of assembly clause of the North Carolina Constitution.”

Barr Tells Off NBC: Mueller Investigation ‘Was A Lie Which the Media Pushed’

Barr responded by ripping the dishonest premise of the investigation: “Well, it is a phony scandal. And people, in talking about the big lie after the election, forget that there was a big lie before – you know, at the beginning of the Trump administration.”

As Guthrie continued to bemoan Barr’s rejection of the Mueller probe, he pointed out how political it was from the beginning: “The reason he [Mueller] was selected by Rod Rosenstein was to give the appearance that there was no partisanship and then he went out and hired a lot of partisan Democrats. And so half the country didn’t have confidence in what was going on.”

Following Guthrie’s complaint that Barr behaved like a Trump “defense lawyer,” the former attorney general hit back hard: “It was a lie. It was a lie which the media pushed. It was a feeding frenzy that hobbled the administration and was unfair to the President and I dealt with it accordingly.”

The live interview on Today followed a one-hour taped special aired on NBC Sunday night in which Barr was interviewed by Nightly News anchor Lester Holt in a similarly contentious exchange.

Holt touted how “controversial” Barr supposedly was by playing liberal media soundbites. Barr hit back: “The narrative – and we live in the age of narrative, not facts. The narrative was I was a toady to Trump and I would do Trump’s bidding. And the media constantly went out with that story.”

WASHINGTON—The Supreme Court on Monday declined to reinstate a congressional map drawn by North Carolina’s Republican-controlled Legislature, after the state’s highest court threw out the plan as a partisan gerrymander.

The majority, as is customary in such emergency orders, provided no reasoning for its ruling. Three conservative justices dissented from Monday’s order, arguing the court should restore the Legislature’s map and then consider whether the federal Constitution prevents state courts from reviewing congressional redistricting decisions made by state lawmakers.

It might be temporary but it might change the way of the next election season.

Supreme Court Rejects GOP Requests to Block Congressional Maps in Pennsylvania and North Carolina

The U.S. Supreme Court is seen in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 4, 2021.

The U.S. Supreme Court declined late on Monday to block state court-ordered congressional maps in Pennsylvania and North Carolina before the 2022 midterm elections, in two orders late on Monday. Three members of the high court’s right flank would have granted the application, and two other conservatives would have entertained it had the maneuver not fallen months before an election.

Late last month, North Carolina’s highest court invalidated a GOP-drawn map of the state’s 14 congressional districts as unconstitutionally partisan and substituted its own. Separately, the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania adopted a proposal favored by the state’s Gov. Tom Wolf (D), who vetoed a map stamped by the Republican-dominated Legislature.  The alternative proposal, known as the “Carter plan,” favored Democrats and received the blessing of the state’s high courts.

Both state supreme court rulings were appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, where petitioners backing the GOP plan argued that the U.S. Constitution empowers state Legislatures to choose the “times, places and manner of holding elections.”

Attorney Joshua Matz, from the Washington, D.C. firm Kaplan Hecker & Fink, opposed the petition for an emergency injunction, arguing that such a move would insert the Supreme Court in a state elections in a way unseen in centuries.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

“This Court has affirmed time and again—most recently in a case arising from Alabama—that it is loathe to upend state election processes late in the day,” Matz wrote in opposition to the requested injunction last week. “Here, with nomination petitions already in circulation, Petitioners ask the Court to scrap the entire congressional map for Pennsylvania and to order the Commonwealth to hold statewide at-large congressional elections for the first time since the 18th century.”

Three justices on the court’s right flank appeared poised to take that action, in noted dissents by Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch.

“This case presents an exceptionally important and recurring question of constitutional law, namely, the extent of a state court’s authority to reject rules adopted by a state legislature for use in conducting federal elections,” Alito wrote, in a dissent joined by the other two justices. “There can be no doubt that this question is of great national importance. But we have not yet found an opportune occasion to address the issue.”

Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh, though unwilling to go so far as to block the maps, appeared to agree with their fellow conservatives on the importance of the questions.

“I agree with Justice Alito that the underlying Elections Clause question raised in the emergency application is important, and that both sides have advanced serious arguments on the merits,” they wrote. “The issue is almost certain to keep arising until the Court definitively resolves it. Therefore, if the Court receives petitions for certiorari raising the issue, I believe that the Court should grant certiorari in an appropriate case—either in this case from North Carolina or in a similar case from another State. If the Court does so, the Court can carefully consider and decide the issue next Term after full briefing and oral argument.”

Roberts and Kavanaugh, however, quarreled with the “extraordinary interim relief” requested and the timing that would upend the districts for the upcoming 2022 primary and general elections.

This matters the most important

“But this Court has repeatedly ruled that federal courts ordinarily should not alter state election laws in the period close to an election,” they wrote, citing the so-called “Purcell principle.”

As far as I see it, if a Republican majority in the state legislators write laws that gerrymander districts to favor Republican candidates,or Democrats, Democrats or organizations can appeal to the Supreme court's of the State, and declare them unconstitutional.

I read that in Wisconsin, there is a similar issue. The Democratic governor has vetoed a gerrymandering bill. If the legislature overturns the veto, it will go to the Supreme Court to Wisconsin...

If it stands, gerrymandering may disappear from in every state.

Republicans similarly argued that the state supreme court overstepped its authority, but the supreme court rejected the argument.

Biden Enjoys Boost in His Job Approval Ratings Following the State of the Union... A Majority Approve of Biden’s Handling of Conflict in Ukraine... Overwhelming Support Exists for Economic Sanctions

Following a State of the Union address which underscored President Joe Biden’s commitment to promoting democracy across the world, the president enjoys a bounce in his handling of the crisis in Ukraine. His standing among the American people has also improved on the issues of the economy and the coronavirus pandemic. While Biden’s bounce is predominantly among his Democratic base, he also enjoys moderate gains among independents. Of note, rare, bipartisan consensus exists on the issue of sanctions levied against Russia. Most Americans, regardless of party, support these sanctions, and nearly seven in ten favor them even if it means higher energy prices domestically.

Biden’s Handling of Ukrainian Crisis

Do you approve or disapprove of how President Biden is handling the situation with Russia and Ukraine?

Source: NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll National Adults. Interviews conducted March 1st through March 2nd, 2022. N=1,322 MOE ±3.8%. Totals may not add to 100% due to rounding.

A majority of Americans (52%) approve of how President Biden is handling the situation in Ukraine, up from 34% last week. 44% disapprove, down from 50% last time. Only 4% are unsure, down from 16%. A plurality of Americans (46%) says Biden’s approach to the conflict in Ukraine is on the mark. 43% say he is being too cautious, and only 6% think he is being too aggressive.

83% of Americans support the economic sanctions imposed against Russia by the United States and its allies. Americans are also willing to make sacrifices in support of Ukraine. 69% of Americans, including 58% of Republicans, say they support economic sanctions against Russia even if it results in higher energy prices in the United States.

Americans express concern about the potential impact of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Nearly eight in ten Americans are concerned that Russia will wage cyberattacks in the United States (78%) and that a broader war will erupt in Europe (78%). Seven in ten (70%) worry that nuclear weapons will be used. Concern about the ramifications of the conflict in Ukraine cross party lines. Americans 45 or older (76%) are more likely than younger Americans (62%) to be concerned that nuclear weapons will be used.

President Biden’s overall job approval rating is up 8 points, 47% from 39%, last week. 50%, down from 55%, disapprove. 18% strongly approve of the job Biden is doing as president, and 38% strongly disapprove.

Biden’s approval rating on his handling of the coronavirus is on an upswing. 55% approve, and 43% disapprove. Americans divided (47% approve to 49% disapprove) in late February. While Biden’s approval rating on the economy remains upside down (45% approve to 53% disapprove), his standing has improved. 36% of Americans previously approved while 58% disapproved.

President Joe Biden enjoys a bounce in his job approval ratings following his State of the Union address. A majority of Americans approve of Biden’s approach toward the conflict in Ukraine and overwhelmingly support the economic sanctions imposed against Russia. Many say they support these actions even if energy prices in the United States rise. On domestic issues, Biden’s approval rating on his handling of the coronavirus pandemic has rebounded, and the president receives an improved score on his handling of the economy. This translates into an eight-point boost in Biden’s overall job score.

"Biden's leadership on Ukraine has resonated over the last week with Americans. He has forged a consensus in the U.S. on his policy toward Ukraine. Americans are even willing to sacrifice higher energy prices in support of the Ukrainian people," says Lee M. Miringoff, Director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. "His standing has also rebounded on COVID and the economy after the State of the Union address."

Shell PLC said Tuesday that it intends to withdraw from Russian oil and gas in a phased manner in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, including immediately halting all spot purchases of Russian crude

Oil major Shell on Tuesday apologized for a buying a heavily discounted consignment of Russian oil and announced it was withdrawing from its involvement in all Russian hydrocarbons.

"As an immediate first step, the company will stop all spot purchases of Russian crude oil. It will also shut its service stations, aviation fuels and lubricants operations in Russia," it said in a statement.

On Friday, Shell purchased 100,000 metric tons of flagship Urals crude from Russia. It was reportedly bought at a record discount, with many firms shunning Russian oil due to Moscow's unprovoked invasion of its neighbor. The purchase did not violate any Western sanctions.

Europe isn't as afraid of Putin now that he's floundering: report

Sarah K. Burris

March 08, 2022

When Russia invaded Ukraine the world took a collective gasp of fear and anxiety that World War III wasn't far behind. What has changed over the past few days is that Russian President Vladimir Putin is becoming increasingly isolated as his country's economy crashes.

"Nearly two weeks into President Vladimir V. Putin’s invasion of Ukraine — Europe’s largest land war since 1945 — the image of a Russian military as one that other countries should fear, let alone emulate, has been shattered," wrote the New York Times on Monday in an analysis.

Russia, which has a military draft, has effectively been trounced by Ukrainian residents who are learning how to shoot guns from YouTube videos.

"Ukraine has shot down military transport planes carrying Russian paratroopers, downed helicopters and blown holes in Russia’s convoys using American anti-tank missiles and armed drones supplied by Turkey," the report said, citing officials and U.S. intelligence assessments.

Meanwhile, many Russian soldiers say that they were lied to about why they were going to the Ukraine border, to begin with. Last week, a Ukrainian official read a text message conversation between a Russian soldier and his mother when his phone was discovered. British Defense Minister Ben Wallace revealed that the Putin military rolled in crematoriums to rapidly incinerate bodies so there couldn't be an accurate count of fatalities on the Russian side. He said they completely "evaporate" the bodies.

The Times reported that the MREs (meals ready to eat) sent with soldiers expired years prior. It's possible that if Putin can hold on and keep fighting for a year or more he could outnumber Ukraine but given the anger stirring among oligarchs losing luxury yachts, properties and other costs, it may not last as sanctions truly get started.

"There are also reports that Russian advances in Ukraine were slowed by lack of fuel — and this in a country rich with oil and gas," wrote Polina Beliakova wrote in Politico Monday. "But ineffective control over fuel consumption in the Russian military actually long preceded the war in Ukraine and had historically created opportunities for embezzlement — that is why fuel is often called the Russian military’s 'second currency.' It is plausible that the long-standing tradition of corruption in fuel supply decreased the pace of Russian advancement in Ukraine."

All of which is to say that things aren't going well for Putin. Intelligence experts have speculated that he could have serious health issues or even cognitive decline from long-haul COVID. Some have even claimed that he appears to have a hand tremor and is hiding it under the table when he speaks.

Speaking to MSNBC on Monday, counter-intelligence expert Frank Figliuzzi explained that Putin has got to be terrified about those in his own government and military because someone is likely working for the United States.

"And the Western governments that have spoken openly about Russia’s military failings are eager to spread the word to help damage Russian morale and bolster the Ukrainians," the report explained.

The piece closed explaining that Putin's only real recourse is bombing Ukraine so much it levels the country and runs off the citizens. The problem is that Putin wants the country, the infrastructure and the citizens as part of his Soviet empire.

Yet Russia’s nonstrategic nuclear weapons are not only more numerous but also more versatile than America’s, many of which can be delivered only from the air (making their credibility partly dependent on Western air superiority). Russia is building an arsenal including not just ground-to-ground missiles but also “antiship and antisubmarine missiles, torpedoes, and depth charges,” according to 2019 congressional testimony from the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency. Last weekend, Russia fired conventionally armed Iskander missiles, which can also be armed with nuclear warheads, into Ukraine from Belarus.

LMAO:

With millions of Americans set to hit the road Memorial Day Weekend and prices at the pump cresting $3 per gallon, top Senate Democrats on Wednesday traded the august halls of the Capitol for a noisy local thoroughfare to "Demand Lower Gas Prices."

Speaking outside an Exxon near the Capitol, Sen. Maria Cantwell of Washington, the top Democrat on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, called on President Trump to act and sent a pair of letters to the White House demanding the administration lean on OPEC nations to ramp up oil production.

Cantwell was joined by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York and Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey. And the spectacle of Democrats – generally seen as opposed to more fossil fuel production due to its impact on climate change – calling for more oil development did not escape notice.

"We are calling on President Trump to act," Cantwell said. "We do not want to see the price of oil get more expensive as we go into the summer driving season."

The average price at the pump is at its highest point since November 2014 and about 60 cents higher than last year. But blaming the president for high gasoline prices – and acting like he can do something about them – is a political tactic perhaps as old as the industrial age itself.

Gee.....seems once again the trump slurpers get all their info from Fox news's data for morons section.....Seems to me all the talk about Biden is causing the gas hike because of his policy's seems to me to be more bullshit to fit your opinions....read the following.

No-nonsense White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Monday used “facts” to shoot down hectoring questions on mounting gasoline prices from Fox News reporter Peter Doocy. “I know that can be inconvenient,” she noted sarcastically.

Doocy pressed her on fuel prices as he dismissed the widely held position that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has triggered the recent leap in costs — and instead blamed Biden administration policies.

“There’s no question” the price hikes are a “direct result of the invasion of Ukraine,” Psaki responded. “Federal policies are not limiting the supplies of oil and gas,” she added.

When Doocy interrupted her, Psaki fired back: “Peter, let me give you the facts here. I know that can be inconvenient, but I think they’re important in this moment.”

Biden administration officials have been “clear” about the need for the U.S. oil supply to meet demand while also pushing for a shift to renewable energy sources, she said.

Psaki pointed out that the U.S. is one of the world’s largest producers of oil and gas, noting that oil production in the nation is at “record numbers.”

Meanwhile, there are “9,000 approved drilling permits that are not being used, so the suggestion that we are not allowing companies to drill is inaccurate,” Psaki added. “I would suggest you ask the oil companies why they’re not using those if there’s a desire to drill more.”

Congress Moves to Suspend Trade Relations with Russia
6:38 am EST reported by Taeggan Goddard

“A POWERFUL, BIPARTISAN group in Congress announced Monday that it would craft legislation suspending normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus, and grant the White House the authority to increase tariffs on the two countries, in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,”
CNN reports.

Ukraine Resistance Continues to Bog Down Russia
6:36 am EST

“On land, in the air and across the sea, the Ukrainian military and civilian soldiers continued to bedevil and bog down Russian forces on Tuesday, protecting the borders of key cities and inflicting heavy losses against the larger and better equipped Russian army,”
the New York Times reports.

“But as Russian forces largely rely on long-range missiles, the invasion has caused widespread and often indiscriminate damage, creating a humanitarian catastrophe that has left hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians with no heat, water or electricity, and struggling to find a path to escape. While the prospect of a cease-fire and “humanitarian corridors” was again being discussed on Tuesday, there was little evidence that conditions on the ground would allow for large-scale evacuations from areas of the heaviest fighting.

“While the Pentagon and other allies largely agreed with the Ukrainian assessment that the Russian advance has been slowed, they cautioned that the Russians would soon regroup. Russia’s military is eight times the size of Ukraine’s and it has vastly superior firepower at its disposal.”

“To a watching world, his message is this, in both his words and his resolute, sometimes haggard appearance: He stands as a mirror to the suffering and spirit of his people.”

Just days into the war engulfing his nation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is drawing historical comparisons as an effective and stirring wartime communicator — yet with a distinctly modern touch inflected by the sensibilities of live television and the personal feel of social media.”

New York Times:
Zelensky is seen in his office in Kyiv for the first time since invasion began.

DEPENDING ON LYING LIKE PUTIN, China Rewrites the Ukraine Narrative
6:51 am

“The Chinese government is scrubbing the country’s internet of sympathetic or accurate coverage of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and systematically amplifying pro-Putin talking points,”
Axios reports.

“China’s wide use of its propaganda and censorship muscle helps insulate Beijing from a domestic backlash against its support for Putin— and leaves its citizens with an airbrushed, false version of events, similar to what’s seen in Putin’s state-controlled Russia.”

Shell Will Stop Buying Russian Oil
6:50 am EST

“Energy giant Shell said Tuesday that it will stop buying Russian oil and natural gas and shut down its service stations, aviation fuels and other operations in the country amid international pressure for companies to sever ties over the invasion of Ukraine,” the AP reports.

Ukraine Aid Growing In New Budget Bill
6:40 am

“Proposed U.S. aid for Ukraine and its European allies has grown beyond $12 billion, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Monday, as congressional bargainers worked toward a bipartisan government-wide spending deal that would also contain fresh sums for battling Covid-19,”
the AP reports.

Punchbowl News:
“The Ukraine aid package – perhaps the most important political issue in Washington right now – has increased from $6.4 billion last week to $10 billion over the weekend to $12 billion as of Monday night. There’s enormous support for this all across the Hill, and that popularity is being used as leverage to push through the broader omnibus package, which will be criticized from the right and left when it’s finally unveiled.”

The Terrifying Paradox of Russian Weakness
7:56 am EST By Taegan Goddard

Gerard Baker:
“It already seems that a possibly inconclusive struggle for Ukraine is a likely outcome, but history suggests there are only two alternatives for the Russian leader—a victory of some sort, at any cost, or the collapse of his regime.

“This lesson emphasizes the peril for all of us. We watch in awe the bravery of the Ukrainian people in resisting Russian aggression. But the stakes for Mr. Putin are so high that they create a terrifying paradox of Russian weakness: The longer the fight goes on, the greater his incentive to escalate. The fear of full nuclear war may be overdone, but we are already a couple of rungs up the ladder that leads to it.”

Walter Mead:
“We should not underestimate the power of Putin’s belief in the efficacy of the iron fist.”

Biden’s Approval Rate Bounces Back

Russia Threatens Europe’s Gas Supplies
7:22 am EST

“Moscow has stoked fears of an energy war by threatening to close a major gas pipeline to Germany after the US pushed its European allies to consider banning Russian oil imports over its invasion of Ukraine,” The Guardian reports.

Adversaries Take Note of Russian Military Stumbles
7:19 am

“When it comes to war, generals say that ‘mass matters,’”
the New York Times reports.

“But nearly two weeks into President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine — Europe’s largest land war since 1945 — the image of a Russian military as one that other countries should fear, let alone emulate, has been shattered.

“Ukraine’s military, which is dwarfed by the Russian force in most ways, has somehow managed to stymie its opponent.”

Biden to Ban Oil Imports from Russia

“President Biden is expected on Tuesday morning to ban the importation of Russian oil into the United States, making the move after pressure from lawmakers in both parties to punish Russia for its invasion of Ukraine,” the New York Times reports.

BUT WHAT ARE COWARDLY REPUBLICANS REALLY DOING?
The GOP Is Laying a Trap for Biden

Catherine Rampell:
“Republicans are setting a trap for President Biden. They’re demanding he take actions that will raise gasoline prices — with obvious plans to attack him politically after the prices rise.”

REPUBLICANS LOVE POLITICAL POWER MORE THAN THEY LOVE TRUTH AND PEOPLE

BUT A MAJORITY OF TRUE AMERICAN PATRIOTS APPROVE BUYING NO MORE OIL AND GAS FROM RUSSIA, EVEN IF IT MEANS PRICES WILL RISE AT THE PUMP.

PEOPLE WHO TRULY LOVE AMERICA AND HUMANITY ARE WILLING TO MAKE SACRIFICES.

It’s Not a War on Russian Television

New York Times:
“To spend several days watching news broadcasts on the main state channels,
as well as surveying state-controlled newspapers,
is to witness the extent of the Kremlin’s efforts to sanitize its war with the Orwellian term ‘special military operation’ —
and to make all news coverage align with that message.

“Words like ‘war’ or ‘invasion’ to describe the actions of the Russian military are forbidden under a new law that President Putin signed on Friday.

The law mandates up to 15 years in prison for any coverage the state deems ‘false information’ about the military campaign.”

Rep. Jim Jordan’s Trip Down Memory Lane Backfires On Twitter
Ed Mazza
Tue, March 8, 2022, 4:48 AM
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) posed a question on social media as war in Ukraine caused gas to spike to record highs.

“Remember how cheap gas was during the Trump Administration?”

His query was greeted with a few reminders he likely wasn’t looking for.

Critics noted that gas prices plunged under former President Donald Trump due to the coronavirus pandemic shutting down much of the nation. Others reminded Jordan of his shifting story about whether or not he spoke to Trump on the day of the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol.

Some on Twitter even reminded him about his time as assistant wrestling coach at Ohio State University, where he was accused of ignoring molestation claims about the team’s doctor. Although Jordan has denied those charges, several athletes have corroborated the story.

Will Biden answer questions?

Will this actually raise prices Russia gets on the world market for its oil in places like China if world prices of oil increase?

Will this raise prices in America ?

Why not actually hurt Russia and just pump more US oil which would help rather than hurt America?

Is this an escalation ?

Does Biden want WW3 ?

Why is Biden using Russia to negotiate a much worse Iran deal with China "helping" out ?

Won't Israel have to respond to Iran moving towards a nuclear bomb?

Does he realize Americans are left in Afghanistan

Does he realize illegal migrants are flooding in at the southern border

Does he realize inflation is surging ?

Does he realize food supplies are shrinking ?

Does he realize a hundred thousand Americans a year are now being killed each year from Chinese manufactured Fentanyl which flows through the southern border

Does he realize there are now issues coming to light with the Covid vaccines and boosters and the CDC record keeping ?

Does he realize he is still jailing and hunting protestors from well over a year ago in prison who are finally actually getting "speedy" trials while still not being given discovery?

Why is he taking weekends off?

or will he just read something and turn his back on America ?

“It’s a gambit that could jump-start President Joe Biden’s stalled domestic agenda by helping Democrats
cut a deal with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV),

That would give the party’s most vulnerable incumbents a potent message to help keep their seats,

Now, after a year of fanning bogus allegations about election fraud and other false claims, she is the most successful fundraiser in the Arizona state legislature.”

“She raised nearly $2.5 million in 2021, outraising even statewide candidates for governor, attorney general and secretary of state… Nearly $2 million of that money came from small donations from outside Arizona as she traveled the U.S. calling for the 2020 election to be overturned and demanding audits of the vote without credible evidence of fraud.”

Update: We've updated the numbers and added more details in a new article, which you can find here.

While most of the attention is focused on Ukraine right now, there's something else that's going on rather quietly that's also of importance. The government of Russia, which is invading Ukraine, is also making it hard for its citizens to access information about the events that are unfolding.

As of right now, and for most of this week, VPN apps have risen to the top of both the App Store and Google Play in Russia.

In case you're not familiar, VPNs provide a secure tunnel to the internet through servers in other countries, which allows those who use them to circumvent local limits in most cases.

As of this Tuesday, the most popular VPN apps in Russia saw an increase in downloads of more than 1,200%.

According to our App Intelligence, daily downloads, which average 10K in Russia across the App Store and Google Play, rose to more than half a million on Tuesday. Just Tuesday!

Since the invasion began, the top VPN apps, which mostly seem generic but also include Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 app, were downloaded more than 1.3 million times in Russia alone.

I wonder how long that will last...

The average cost for a gallon of regular gasoline has surpassed $4 per gallon for the first time since 2008. Many consumers have seen prices at the gas pump rise swiftly, with the price of regular gas jumping 41 cents during the first full week of Russia's war in Ukraine, according to AAA.

That will likely cost the typical household an additional $2,000 per year in gasoline costs, according to Yardeni Research in a Monday research note. That comes on top of about $1,000 in extra costs at the grocery store due to inflation, which means the typical household will have $3,000 less this year to spend on other items, Yardeni said.

The outcome of the trial of four men facing federal charges of conspiring to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2020 could hinge on whether the prosecution can show they were likely to commit the crime even without the encouragement and logistical support provided by government informants.

The prosecution’s case, which began Tuesday with jury selection in Grand Rapids, Mich., is based largely on testimony from cooperating informants, undercover agents and recorded texts, online chats and phone calls, according to the October 2020 complaint. The complaint details the alleged plotters’ extensive training with firearms and explosives, meetings held in a business with a concealed trap door and surveillance missions near the governor’s summer home.

Defense attorneys are expected to argue that the government entrapped the four men by orchestrating the plot and goading them to join. They have won some pretrial battles that could make the government’s job harder, legal analysts said.

Entrapment is very difficult to prove without reasonable doubt..
