As if the bill wasn't stupid enough already? It actually lowers the GDP?

But hey! It promotes "green energy" whatever that happens to be this week!

MANCHIN SUPPORTS INFLATION REDUCTION ACT OF 2022

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) announced he has reached an agreement with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to vote on the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 will address record inflation by paying down our national debt, lowering energy costs and lowering healthcare costs.

“Over the last year, leaders in Washington have ignored repeated warnings about the severe threat of inflation and the consequences of unprecedented domestic spending. Despite these concerns and my calls to give the country time to fully realize the impacts of such historic levels of spending and our inflation crisis, many Democrats have continued to push for trillions more in spending to meet a political deadline. As difficult as it is for some to hear, political calls to action that ignore the severity of the crises we face and will continue to face are a recipe for national disaster.

“We must be honest about the economic reality America now faces if we want to avoid fanning the flames of inflation. At its core, the purpose of reconciliation is to get our economic and financial house in order. Contrary to foolish talk otherwise, America cannot spend its way out of debt or out of inflation. With respect to my position, I have never and will never walk away from solving the problems facing the nation we all love. I strongly support the passage of commonsense policies that reduce inflation and focus on the major challenges confronting America today and in the future.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

“I have worked diligently to get input from all sides on the legislation my Democratic colleagues have proposed and listened to the views of my Republican friends to find a path forward that removes inflationary policies so that Congress can respond to Americans’ suffering from high prices. Based on that work, I now propose and will vote for the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. Rather than risking more inflation with trillions in new spending, this bill will cut the inflation taxes Americans are paying, lower the cost of health insurance and prescription drugs, and ensure our country invests in the energy security and climate change solutions we need to remain a global superpower through innovation rather than elimination. Whether it is the threats to our energy security, high inflation, exploding national debt, persistent income inequality, supply chain chaos or the emergence of a new Cold War, it is time to put away the partisan swords and advance legislation that is in the best interests of the future of this nation and the American people we all represent – not just one party.

“It is past time for America to begin paying down our $30 trillion national debt and get serious about the record inflation that is crushing the wages of American workers. In practical terms, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 would dedicate hundreds of billions of dollars to deficit reduction by adopting a tax policy that protects small businesses and working-class Americans while ensuring that large corporations and the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share in taxes.

“Tax fairness is vital to our nation’s economic future. It is wrong that some of America’s largest companies pay nothing in taxes while freely enjoying the benefits of our nation’s military security, infrastructure and rule of law. It is commonsense that a domestic corporate minimum tax of 15 percent be applied only to billion-dollar companies or larger ensuring that America’s largest businesses are no longer able to operate for free in our economy. Furthermore, to avoid inevitable partisan gamesmanship and increase confidence in the fairness of the tax system, tax reform should never put U.S. businesses at a disadvantage against international competitors. Our tax code should not favor red state or blue state elites with loopholes like SALT and should focus more on closing unfair loopholes like carried interest. Through the enforcement of a fair tax code, we can use the revenue to cut the deficit and lower the cost of healthcare for working families and small businesses.

“Let me make it clear, I will not vote to support policies that make the United States more dependent on foreign energy and supply chains or risk moving the country closer to the unstable and vulnerable European model of energy we are witnessing today. Most importantly, I am heartened by the bipartisan recognition that for America to achieve our energy and climate goals, it is critical we reform the broken permitting process. President Biden, Leader Schumer and Speaker Pelosi have committed to advancing a suite of commonsense permitting reforms this fall that will ensure all energy infrastructure, from transmission to pipelines and export facilities, can be efficiently and responsibly built to deliver energy safely around the country and to our allies.

“For too long, the reconciliation debate in Washington has been defined by how it can help advance Democrats political agenda called Build Back Better. Build Back Better is dead, and instead we have the opportunity to make our country stronger by bringing Americans together. I will do everything I can to usher in a new era of compromise and commonsense that will make America more energy secure, financially sound and a more united country for this generation and the next.

“From here forward, the debate over a future reconciliation bill or any targeted legislation must focus on supporting the everyday hardworking Americans we have been elected to serve. I support the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 because it provides a responsible path forward that is laser focused on solving our nation’s major economic, energy and climate problems. The question for my colleagues is whether they are willing to put their election politics aside and embrace the commonsense approach that the overwhelming majority of the American people support and will best serve the future of this nation.”

The latest large spending bill to come down the pipeline is the so-called Inflation Reduction Act, which is backed by President Joe Biden and is currently the result of a deal between Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV). The fate of the exact legislation in play at the moment hinges on moderate Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), who has yet to decide whether or not she’ll support it.

Of course, the $433 billion plan, is a ruse. A University of Pennsylvania-Wharton Budget Model determined that the bill would do nothing to get a handle on inflation, and it would actually make it slightly worse by 0.05 percent.

“The Act would very slightly increase inflation until 2024 and decrease inflation thereafter,” the study said. “These point estimates are statistically indistinguishable from zero, thereby indicating low confidence that the legislation will have any impact on inflation.”

Sure, the bill might have some aspects that Democratic congressmen can use in stump speeches when they return home, but the premise is flat-out dishonest.

Cassidy Hutchinson, the former Trump White House aide who emerged as a star witness for the US House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, continued working on the former president's behalf for nine weeks after he left office, according to government records exclusively obtained by Insider.

Hutchinson served as a "coordinator" for Trump's official, taxpayer-funded post-presidential office from about January 20, 2021, to April 1, 2021, earning an annualized salary of $90,000, the General Services Administration documents state.

The documents establish that Hutchinson continued to earn a government paycheck for work in support of Trump for weeks after she witnessed his actions — and lack of action — on January 6, 2021, even as other colleagues soon thereafter resigned.

Hutchinson's whereabouts immediately after January 6 have been the subject of considerable scrutiny and uncertainty. Bloomberg reported days after the attack that Hutchinson might join Trump in Florida, but Trump has stated he hardly knew her and turned her down. The Washington Post in June reported that Hutchinson did not have a full-time job after her White House tenure ended.

"Why did she want to go with us if she felt we were so terrible?" Trump wrote on Truth Social after Hutchinson's testimony last month. "I understand that she was very upset and angry that I didn't want her to go, or be a member of the team. She is bad news!"

Trump, who refused to concede he lost the 2020 presidential election to now-President Joe Biden, asked thousands of his supporters gathered that day for a rally in Washington, DC, to march on the US Capitol to protest Congress' certification of states' electoral votes. The mob then attacked the Capitol in Trump's name — with deadly results.

"As an American, I was disgusted. It was unpatriotic. It was un-American," Hutchinson, who served as a trusted aid to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, testified before the January 6 committee on June 28. "We were watching the Capitol building get defaced over a lie. And it was something that was really hard in that moment to digest knowing what I'd been hearing down the hall in the conversations that were happening."

Hutchinson's testimony included vivid descriptions of Trump's efforts on January 6 to rally protestors — including those he knew were armed — and efforts to personally join the mob that attacked the Capitol.

Trump argued with Secret Service agents who refused to drive him there from the Ellipse near the National Mall, and then, enraged, threw his lunch at a White House wall upon returning to the presidential residence, Hutchinson testified.

Hutchinson is now cooperating with the parallel investigation by the Justice Department, which contacted her following her June appearance before the House January 6 committee.

Hutchinson and her lawyers did not respond to Insider's requests for comment.

Most Alleged Dead Arizona Voters Were Alive

Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich (R) said “his investigators found just one dead voter after thoroughly reviewing findings from a partisan review of the 2020 election that alleged 282 ballots were cast in the name of someone who had died,” the AP reports.

“The finding by the Republican attorney general, who is running for U.S. Senate in Tuesday’s primary, further discredits the review conducted last year.”

Trump Punts on Missouri Endorsement
~~~~~~“The Republicans competing for the U.S. Senate nomination in Tuesday’s primary here spent their final day of campaigning in a familiar state of suspense — checking their phones for a statement from Donald Trump,” the Washington Post reports.
“But by day’s end, the former president injected more chaos into an already tumultuous race, simply endorsing ‘ERIC’ — a first name shared by two rival candidates — former governor Eric Greitens and state Attorney General Eric Schmitt — as he suggested he was leaving it to voters to choose between them.”
How Biden Decided to Kill the Most Wanted Terrorist
August 1, 2022 at 9:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 0 Comments
CNN: “The US drone strike that killed Zawahiri on his balcony in downtown Kabul was the product of months of highly secret planning by Biden and a tight circle of his senior advisers. Among the preparations was a small-scale model of Zawahiri’s safe house, constructed by intelligence officials and placed inside the White House Situation Room for Biden to examine as he debated his options.
“For Biden, the opportunity to take out the world’s most wanted terrorist, one of the masterminds of the September, 11, 2001, attacks, was fraught with the risk of accidentally killing civilians in the Afghan capital — just as a US drone strike did 11 months ago during the chaotic US military withdrawal from the country.”
Scott, this package will reduce the federal deficit by over $300 billion.  Already, on my watch, the deficit has come down my first year by $350 billion and a record $1.7 trillion at the end of this fiscal year.  Now, that — this bill is going keep that progress going.
Yes, I’ll say it again: This legislation will bring down the deficit.  Bring down the deficit.
The sixth point I want to make is: This bill will not raise taxes on anyone making less than $400,000 a year.  And I promise — a promise I made during the campaign and one which that I ha- — that I’ve have kept.
Now, look, I know it can be — sometimes seem like nothing gets done in Washington.  (Laughs.)  I know it never crossed any of your minds.  But the work of the government can be slow and frustrating and sometimes even infuriating.  Then the hard work of hours and days and months from people who refuse to give up pays off.  History is made.  Lives are changed.
With this legislation, we’re facing up to some of our biggest problems, and we’re a taking a giant step forward as a nation.  That didn’t just happen on this inf- — on this inflation reduction bill.  It also happened yesterday when the Senate made the bipartisan decision as a nation to invest in America’s manufacturing technology of semiconductors, and additional funding for basic research and development in the cutting-edge industries of the 21st century.
The bottom line that it will create hundreds of thousands manufacturing and construction jobs. They will provide more GDP and zero inflation
GOP Reversal Imperils Bill to Treat Veteran Ailments
August 1, 2022 at 9:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 15 Comments
“A broadly supported bill to expand medical care eligibility for millions of veterans who may have been exposed to toxins from burning pits of trash on U.S. military bases has become ensnared in a partisan fight over spending, leaving its fate uncertain after a large group of Republicans pulled their support,” the New York Times reports.
“The legislation, which would be one of the largest expansions of veterans benefits in history, had been expected to easily pass the Senate last week after receiving an overwhelming bipartisan vote in the House. An earlier version passed the Senate in June on a lopsided vote, with 34 Republicans voting in favor.
“But Republicans abruptly withdrew their backing, with all but eight opposed to moving forward on it last week.”
WHOOPS! WE GOOFED, SENATE REPUBLICANS NOW REALIZE:
Politico:
“Senate Republicans are reversing course on a veterans health care bill, signaling they’ll now help it quickly move to President Joe Biden’s desk after weathering several days of intense criticism for delaying the legislation last week.”
Coldheartedtruth Teller said...
After all the false starts and dashed hopes of the past two years, I’m reluctant to count my chickens before they’ve actually been signed in the Oval Office. Still, it appears that Democrats have finally agreed on another major piece of legislation, the Inflation Reduction Act. And if it does become law, it will be a very big deal.
First, would the law, in fact, reduce inflation? Yes, probably — or at least it would reduce inflationary pressures. That’s because the legislation’s increased spending, mainly on clean energy but also on health care, would be more than offset through its tax provisions; so it would be a deficit reduction act, which other things being equal would make it disinflationary.
But you want to think of the Inflation Reduction Act as being like the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act of 1956, which probably did strengthen national defense a bit but mainly benefited America by investing in the nation’s future. This bill would do the same, and maybe even more so.
Coldheartedtruth Teller said...
To understand why this bill inspires so much hope, it’s helpful to understand what has changed since Democrats’ last big effort to deal with climate change, the 2009 Waxman-Markey bill, which passed the House but died in the Senate.
The core of Waxman-Markey was a “cap and trade” system that would, in practice, have operated a lot like a carbon tax. There were and are good arguments for such a system, which would give companies and individuals an incentive to cut emissions in multiple ways. But politically, it was easy to portray it as an eat-your-spinach plan, one demanding sacrifices from ordinary workers.
With the failure of Waxman-Markey, the Obama administration was reduced to a much more limited agenda, one that relied on carrots rather than sticks — tax breaks for clean energy, loan guarantees for companies investing in renewables. I think it’s fair to say that most economists didn’t expect these measures to achieve much.
But a funny thing happened on the way to the climate apocalypse: There was revolutionary progress in renewable energy technology, probably jump-started, at least in part, by those Obama-era policies. In 2009, electricity generated by wind power was still more expensive than electricity generated by burning coal, and solar power was more expensive still. But over the next decade wind power costs fell 70 percent, solar costs 89 percent.
Coldheartedtruth Teller said...
Add in plunging battery prices and it has become possible to see the outlines of an economy that achieves drastic reductions in carbon emissions with little if any sacrifice, using electricity generated by renewable energy — as opposed to burning fossil fuels — to heat and cool our buildings, run our factories, power our cars and more.
The climate portion of the Inflation Reduction Act is, for the most part, an attempt to accelerate that energy transition, mainly by offering tax credits for the adoption of low-emission technologies, including electric vehicles, but also by offering incentives to use less energy in general, notably by making buildings more energy efficient.
There’s every reason to believe that these measures would have large effects. Unlike fossil fuels, which have been around for a long time, renewable energy is still an “infant industry” with a steep learning curve: The more we use these technologies, the better we get at them. So providing incentives for clean energy now will make that energy a lot cheaper in the future.
In his forced (and, he hopes, temporary) retirement, defeated former president Donald Trump has come up with a new undertaking. He’s undertaking.
Technically, his Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., is now acting as a “cemetery company.” (Suggested slogan: “People are dying to get into Bedminster!”) And he has already landed his first occupant: He just buried his late ex-wife, Ivana Trump, right near the first tee.
Sign up for a weekly roundup of thought-provoking ideas and debates
Photos published by the New York Post on Sunday show a lone grave at the edge of a field with some yellowed grass around it, a clump of white flowers on the freshly turned earth and a flat stone marker with a less-than-effusive epitaph: “IVANA TRUMP, February 20, 1949 - July 14, 2022.” She died last month of an apparent fall.
The former president has shown little interest in conventional post-presidency pursuits, such as building a presidential library; he’s not much for reading, and he’s trying to hide his presidential papers, not display them. But why would he bury himself in, of all things, the interment trade?
ADVERTISING
Simple: He has seemingly turned his late ex-wife (and his oldest kids have turned their late mother) into a tax dodge. Dartmouth professor Brooke Harrington, a specialist in tax optimization, checked the New Jersey tax code and reported that operating a cemetery at the Trump National offers “a trifecta of tax avoidance. Property, income & sales tax, all eliminated.” She tweeted that it “looks like one corpse will suffice to make at least 3 forms of tax vanish.”
Mr. Biden didn’t speak to Mrs. Pelosi about her trip, an administration official said. Members of the administration’s national security team briefed Mrs. Pelosi, said Saloni Sharma, a spokeswoman for the White House’s National Security Council. “She will make her own decisions, because Congress is an independent branch of government,” Ms. Sharma said.
For Mrs. Pelosi, the visit is a potential capstone for a career that she built focused on strengthening democracy around the world, a former aide said. Many Democrats expect the longtime leader to step down at the end of this year, so her time to travel as second in line to the presidency and leader of the House is likely ending.
“She’s a woman who uses every minute of her life to get stuff done,” said Daniel Weiss, Mrs. Pelosi’s former chief of staff. “It is expected to be near the end of her career and this is an important piece of her overall legacy in Congress,” he said.
Mrs. Pelosi has previously taken potentially high-risk trips. She visited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv in May, the highest-ranking U.S. official to do so. Members of Congress have increasingly worried about China attacking Taiwan, and when asked two weeks ago how the U.S. could deter such action, Mrs. Pelosi stressed that it was important to “show support for Taiwan.”
Asia has been a focus of Mrs. Pelosi’s since she first arrived in Congress more than three decades ago. She has often spoken out about human-rights violations in China. She unfurled a protest banner in Tiananmen Square in 1991, two years after the Chinese military crushed pro-democracy demonstrations there. In 2015, Beijing allowed her to visit Chinese-controlled Tibet, a rare concession, especially given her longstanding relationship with the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan leader.
In his first interview since testifying, Robinson said he wasn't aware of the magnitude of the riot when Trump demanded to go to the Capitol. Speaking in hindsight, Robinson said, "Now knowing what actually happened, that would've been horrible. Had the motorcade responded to the Capitol, I think, would've just been far worse."
"I think it would have probably encouraged more rioting. And (the rioters would have) felt supported. If the presidential motorcade came in support of them. So I think the insurrectionists probably would have felt as though they had the support of the President," Robinson said.
Coldheartedtruth Teller said...
Robinson said he is "so thankful" that the motorcade did not turn around. "Had we made that move, I thought it would have been an insane movement and I think the sentiment was felt even with the Secret Service."
He wanted to go to the Capitol to lead both the armed and unarmed protesters he sent there as, at his behest, they broke into the Capitol in an attempt to stop and invalidate a legitmate election of the voters of the United States of America.
A court would surely call that treason.
Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...
And remember, during the long three hours when they were breaking in, Trump resisted every attempt by his upset advisors and even his family to call on the mob to stop their acts of violent trespassing as they violently attempted to stop the legitimate proceedings of the government.
Nancy Pelosi Is Doing the Right Thing
This is arguably the most painful headline I’ve ever written, but it was a headline that needed to be written.
It is rare that Nancy Pelosi should get credit for something, but for whatever reason, she is bound and determined to fly to Taiwan in the face of actual threats from the Chinese government. The recognition of Taiwan’s independence is always the right thing, and Pelosi’s decision to fly there is an affirmation of the United States’ recognition of such.
Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...
So are we going to believe him if he tries to claim, "If only I had been allowed to go there, there would have been no violence"?
Coldheartedtruth Teller said...
About the same time as the former President told them to go home and then he said he loved them
Ch said that it was not an insurrection.
Georgia’s tax department announced taxpayers can claim embryos as dependents on their state taxes just weeks after an appeals court ruled to redefine “natural person” to include the unborn.
Bonus Quote of the Day
August 2, 2022 at 9:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 3 Comments
“If you think this drone strike has stopped the threat to our homeland coming from Afghanistan, you have missed a lot of history. To the Biden Administration: congratulations on this operation, but your overall strategy of abandoning Afghanistan is going to come back to haunt America because Afghanistan is again going to be a safe haven for radical Islam. Batten down the hatches — go on the offensive.”
— Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), on Twitter.
Yes, CONTINUE TO OPPOSE the TALIBAN and especially their treatment of women and ruining of the Afghan economy.
ATTENTION HISPANICS!!!
Biden Administration Reunites 400 Migrant Families
“The Biden administration has reunited 400 children with their parents after they were separated as migrants crossing the southern border under the Trump administration,” NBC News reports.
“More than 5,000 families were separated under Trump’s 2018 ‘zero tolerance’ policy and a 2017 pilot program and advocates estimate over 1,000 remain separated. Because the Trump administration did not keep records of which children were separated and where they were sent, the task force and lawyers working on behalf of separated families have had a difficult time identifying families to offer them the chance of reunification.”
CRUELTY OF THE TRUMP POLICY.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Tuesday, defying stern warnings from Beijing against a visit that China’s Communist Party regards as a challenge to its sovereignty.
Mrs. Pelosi, the highest-ranking U.S. official in a quarter-century to visit the island, which Beijing claims as part of its territory, is set to meet Wednesday with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and legislators in the self-ruled democracy.
Chinese officials, including leader Xi Jinping in a phone call last week with President Biden, have warned of unspecified countermeasures should Mrs. Pelosi’s Taiwan visit proceed.
Follow along here with The Wall Street Journal for live updates on her visit.
Three In Missouri Pirmary Claim Trump Endorsed Them
Missouri U.S. Senate candidate Billy Long (R) tweets:
I coined the phrase ‘Trump Train.’ I’ve been with him through thick and thin but I was taken aback when he came out with a full throated endorsement of me in #MOSen race! He said to pick BETWEEN the two ERIC’s – that’s ME! E.S. line 2 E.G. line 4 I’m BETWEEN the two on line 3!
This comes after Eric Greitens (R) and Eric Schmitt (R) both claimed Trump endorsed them.
Pelosi Lands In Taiwan
CNN: “Pelosi’s stop in Taipei is the first time that a US House speaker has visited Taiwan in 25 years. Her trip comes at a low point in US-China relations and despite warnings from the Biden administration against a stop in Taiwan.”
Meanwhile, Pelosi writes in the Washington Post why she made the visit. (LINK at politicalwire.com)
Tax Credit Extension
The revival of the $7,500 tax credit is a big deal, especially for Tesla, General Motors and Toyota. All three have sold at least 200,000 vehicles that were eligible for the incentive as the system is set up now. Once manufacturers cross that threshold, buyers of their cars start to receive reduced credits, and eventually none at all. Ford and Nissan are nearing this point, as well.
The bill would make the full incentive available again starting next year, and importantly, would allow consumers to access the perk at the point of sale instead of during tax season.
